Language Tip: Verbs

Every sentence must have one (or more) verbs.Examples:

Huda lives in a villa near Al Jimi Mall. She loves shopping at Jimi Mall.

TO BE Language Tip: We use forms of the verb to be in the present simple tense to describe things or to talk about names, professions, nationalities, age, feelings, location and marital status.

Bawadi Mall is not the biggest mall in Al Ain It is on the Meyzad

There are more than 400 shops at Bawadi Mall.

Language Tip: Verbs

goes, works, buys, and has are PRESENT tense forms of the verbs to go, to work, to speak, and to buy.

is and are are PRESENT tense forms of the verb to be.

Verb forms like go, work, buy, have and be are called BASE forms or INFINITIVES of the verbs.

Finding the Subject of a Sentence

The verb is the most important word in a sentence . To find the subject(s) of the sentence, first find the verb. Look at the sentence below.

Hessa has lunch at Starbucks.

Put a rectangle around the verb, like this:


Now ask yourself ‘Who’ or ‘’What’ did the action (i.e. ‘who’ or ‘what ‘ likes..)? Put ‘who’ or ‘what’ before the verb. The answer is the subject of the sentence.


The answer is Hessa. ‘Hessa ’ is the subject of the sentence. Underline the subject.


Practice: Now look at this sentence. Put a rectangle around the verb and underline the subject.

My aunt and uncle go to Dubai Mall every weekend.

Punctuation: Capital letters

What words get capital letters?

Names of people: Hessa, Mohammed Al Shamsi.

Names of places : England, Al Ain, the Sahara Desert, McDonalds, Hussar Motors.

Names of rivers, mountains and oceans: the Nile, Jebel Hafeet, the Arabian Gulf

Months of the year and days of the week: October, Monday


Language Tip: doesn’t

We put doesn’t ( or does not) in front of the base form of the verb to form a negative in the Simple Present Tense..Example:

Hessa speaks Arabic . She doesn’t speak English.Huda has two children. Fatima doesn’t have any children.

Any word at the beginning of a sentence: My home is in Dubai.

The pronoun ‘I’: May I have some coffee, please?

Names of holidays: Ramadan, Eid, National Day

Punctuation: Commas

Practice: Put commas and full stops in the following sentences.

Compound SentencesLook at this sentence.

Fatima is married. Fatima she has two children

We can join these two simple sentences to make a compound sentence by using the

right conjunction because the subject is the same in both sentences.

Fatima is married and she has two children.


Language Tip:

There are many rules for the accurate use of commas but, for now, we are only going to look at punctuation in lists.

Look where we put and.

He likes football, playing golf, watching TV and playing computer games.

We can put a comma after TV, but it is not necessary.

My Favourite Mall

Wafi Mall is my favourite mall in Dubai. It has a great location, amazing architecture and there are many things to see and do there.

The mall is just off Sheik Rashid Road in the Umm Hurair district of Dubai, very close to a Metro station The mall is in the Wafi Centre which is built in the shape of a giant pyramid. There are giant Egyptian statues inside and outside the mall and it has magnificent stained glass windows. There are so many shops that there is something for the whole family.

I try to go to Wafi Mall whenever my family visits Dubai. We usually have a delicious lunch at Baladna, a Lebanese restaurant or we go to Planet Hollywood. After that my sisters and I go window shopping or visit Khan Murjan, an underground Egyptian souq. I get bored when my brother shops at Audissey or wants to watch a Horror movie. That’s when my sisters and I go to Cleopatra’s Spa. That is the best part of the day. Later, we all meet for coffee at Starbucks before we go home.

Wafi Mall is not the biggest mall in Dubai but is it my favourite mall because it is easy to get to, it has an incredible design and there are many interesting things to do there.
