WPC THIS WEEK

REMINDERS ♦ This Sunday the Flame of Unity will be at First Presbyterian

Church of Gardena, and we will pray for that congregation as others pray for us when the Flame is here.

♦ Our New Member Seminar begins this morning and continues on

April 28 and May 5, from 10:15 am-noon in Hoffman Hall. Interested in becoming a member of the WPC family? Come check us out!

♦ This year’s VBS will run from 9 am to 12 noon beginning June 10

through June 14. The fee is $50.00 per child age 4 to 11 and younger children who have completed one year of preschool. Space is limited to 50. Register at http://2013.cokesburyvbs.com/westwoodpres.

REACHING OUT ACROSS LOS ANGELES

Join WPC as we go out into our community and serve those in need through our semi-annual day of service, Westwood Reaches Out, on May 11. This years opportunities include a Habitat for Humanity build, food sorting at the

Westside Food Bank, and a family friendly assembling of beauty products for residents at People Assisting The Homeless. Visit our table on the side porch for more information and to sign up today! All participants will get a free Westwood Reaches Out T-shirt! For questions, please contact Travis Overbeck, Dir. Mission and Outreach, [email protected].

ABF RETURNS TO FAITHS OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Having completed the study of Angels and Demons, Adult Bible Forum will resume its examination of the faiths of Southern California on April 28th in the Conference Room at 10 am. If you missed prior sessions covering Buddhism, Roman Catholicism, Judaism, Mormons, Pentecostals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and 7th Day Adventists, don’t worry. We still have Hinduism, Islam, Orthodox Christianity

(Greek, Russian, and Armenian), Coptic, and Christian Scientists to go. Come join us!

DONATE!

Only 2-3% of Californians donate blood! Let’s show the Red Cross that the WPC family can do a LOT better than that. If you are able to donate blood and haven’t signed up, give it some serious thought today and sign up after church on the side porch.

The Blood Drive is next Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm in Hoffman Hall. It won’t take too much time from your weekend plans--easy to fit in. And it just might be your pint of blood that keeps an accident victim alive to make it to the hospital this summer. Sharon Vairo will be on hand to answer all questions.

WOMEN READING TRAVELS TO EASTER ISLAND Easter Island, a novel by Jennifer Vanderbes, will be featured at Women Reading, May 1 at 7:30 pm. The author skillfully weaves together parallel narratives of two women living at different time periods who each are confronted with unraveling some of the mysteries of the people who once inhabited Easter Island. “This impressive debut is rich in shades of gray: meteorological, scientific, intellectual and emotional.” The discussion will be led by Caroline Arnold and Gloria Turner. The Women Reading Potluck is June 5.

EMPHASIS ON “SEARCH” AT FS&S MAY 5 Faith Search, and Support begins a new book Sunday, May 5 (not today as previously noted in News & Concerns--humble apologies). The book is Crisis, Irony and Postmodernity, 1950-2005, the third of Gary Dorrien’s trilogy, The Making of American Liberal Theology. This last volume explores fresh ideas of contemporary theologians, who, like us, struggle to make sense of their faith in a secular world. Dorrien is Reinhold Niebur Professor of Social Ethics at Union

Theological Seminary and a professor of religion at Columbia. The class meets at 10 am in the downstairs lounge. Books are heavily discounted at $13, thanks to the good offices of Marc Labinger, and scholarships are available. The teachers are Jack Crossley, Luke Landers and John Quiring.

HIGH SCHOOL LUNCH TODAY! Whoever said, "there’s no such thing as a free lunch," has never been to WPC! If you are in 9th-12th grade, join us after the 11 am service on the side porch as we head into Westwood for lunch. This event is completely free! We'll eat, chat and catch up on all of life's happenings. Don't forget that we do this twice a month, on the first and third Sunday. See you there! Questions? [email protected]

RUMMAGE SALE COMING SOON

Yes, it’s that time again. The semi-annual Rummage Sale is May 11 to 13. Rummage through your garage, basement, and closets and bring us what you don’t want. Ask your neighbors what gently used items they’d like to get rid of. We can almost guarantee that a happy rummage sale shopper will want to recycle what you no

longer use.
