SRC VIOLATESSTU OF NT RIGHTS

ITHE MUSEPresident Rom)key and our enlightened S.R.C. h2ve decided

to bow to the wishes of George Perlin and apologize to Mayor Mews. They don I t say this is an apology - they merely say it is antlcxplanation. II

This action of the SRC is outrageous. They have beendrifting aloNg on a wave of indecisEveness for two months. Pres.ROID.>key has neglected to take a s"GE'nd on 2.nything for fear that thisor that "head vlil1 be turned t

University NotebookTilE GRJ-;AT ABOUT FACE.

Defiant of all opposition the S. R. C. has, during thecurrent controversy, stated over and over again its policyof d,oing what is right regardless of the consequences. Tothis policy they have rigidly adhered. until the results ofthe confidence wte in the council were announced. Thenwith apparently absolutely no qualms of conscience theymade a complete about-face and gave up the policy whichthey vowed they would rigidly and steadfastly maiql.ainWhen they must realize that a large majority or interestedstudents have no confidence in them. how cal' they jll$tifytheir N'fusal to resign ? The~' say they don't have to!

True, but they did not have to visit Mayor Mews, yetthey did 50 because they thought it was right. The S. R. C.say they must do what is right and in the same breaththey say they will not resign, in spite of the fact a majorityof the students have no confidence in them. How can theyreo:oncile their pseudo rightousness with their latestaction which is obviously against all parliamentary prec«lent and common sense.

Even this momentll$ reversal pales into insignificancein the light of a remark of one S. R. C. member aftl"1' lastTuesday night's meeting. "We can't resign nvw, there'stoo much business up in the air". To this we say, hov.'egotistical can a person get. Does the S. R. C. think thatit is so indespensible that its resignation would thhrowthis university into chaoo? Do they believe that in thisUniversity there are not ten people who could take overwhere they left off? Let's face it, the bll$iness of the SR. C. is not all that complicated that a bit of explanationon the part of the present council could not straighten thewhole issue out in a very short time.

It is obvious that by the spirit of the law they haveno choice but to resign, but to hide behind the constitutionand to say that they are indespensible, is adding greatinjury to the insults they have hurll!d at the students atthe reo:ent as&CIIlbly.

Case UnsolvedAltllouc;h the Council emerged a badly beatell victor

from its fij!;ht with the students, they were not so successful in their attempt to "assert" themselves.

For three weeks they had been tryinj!; to find out whowas responsible for the vandalism at the Freshman Social.A door in the men's washroom had been broken and thefloor had been strewn with beer bottles. President Gushueasked the Council to investigate and made it clear that ifthey took action, he would j!;iyc them full rein.

They jumped with j!;lce into the case. Why, they $Rid,if we can solve this case we will show the students thatthey bave a stronj!; Council-a dJuncii that can get thinj!;sdone.

The Judicial Committee was appointed and work onCase No. One began. They tried to j!;et wilnesses but theanswer from everyone was the same: "I don't knownothill'."

In the middle of The Chaotic Fortnij!;ht they threw inthe towel. They mll$t now admit to the President that theywere unable to solYe the mystery. But at least they1l 00able to stick out their chests and say, "But who cares abouta Simple unsolved crime? We showed the whole universitythat we are invincible."

Do you fed you're not wanted? Do people stare atyou? Does conversation stop whell you join a l'7oup? No,it's not because you have dandruU ... and you needn'tchanj!;e your brand of tooth paste. YOU are a member atthe S.R.C.

You were elected by less than fifty per cent of thevotes cast in the S.R.e. election. In the non-eonfidence votealmost sixty per cent of the voters expressed their lack: ofconfidence in you. Yet still you stay ino(fice. You are safelywithin the bounds of the S.R.e. Constitution-but even so,it must still be an uncomfortable feelinj!;. You are a member of the S.R.C. by virtue of apathy-by virtue of h-ventvfour WlCast ballots.

YES, MABEL, MEMORIAL liAS A BASKETBALL TEAl\1

Sport. once a main-stay of common roout convel'Sltion, seems to have quietly taken a back seal to the 5. R C. controveny in recent weeks. During the height of that muchdebated issue the Varsity besketbaU team inconspicuouslylaunched ita season. (l believe a notice was posted announcing the time of the game, but I'm not quite sure).

Anyway, I distinctly heard one typically "''ell-inform@{{freshette 1IIk-"Hey, Mabel ... is that the MEMORIALteam that's playin' tonight?" "Gee, I dunno," replied herequally welHnfonned companion, "dOf!l5 Memorial have att'8ITI?" And off they went into the. farther realms ofAcademe...

Yes, Mabel. Memorial has a~ it has a goodone. They play regularly, every Tuesday and F'riday nightagainst the best bhketball teams in St. John's .. BUTYOU'D NEVER KNOW IT! At the opening game yourAnnchair Athlete counted about thirty heads from MUN,,approximately .037 per cent of the ~udenl body). Theteam must really appreciate such tnmendOWI mpport.

Somebody mU$l U5UmI! the responsibility for publicisilll Memorial teams. Because it is a bi-monthly publkation, the MUSE cannot do it. It is not the job of the teamor its coach. Obviously, it is up to the Athletic Union. Ithink it would be of far more profit to Memorial if a littleof the 600 dollars to be spent. on the A.U. banquet wentinto an inter*ve publicity campaign, including pep rallys.prominent Iigns posted aroud the UniYftSity, and anytmngelse that might make Memorial te8m$ better known toMemorial Itudent,s
