    ABOUT WRI

    WWWWWeld ing Re se a rc h Inst i tute, Tiruc hira p p a lli was esta b l ishe d b y the

    Government of India with assistance from UNDP under the aegis of Bharat

    Heavy Elec tricals Limited, Tiruc hirappalli. This institute is an industry oriented

    research centre to promote the application of welding technology in

    Indian industries.

    Objectives:

    Recognis ing the importance of wel l t ra ined manpower in ef fect ive

    implementat ion of appropriate welding technology, WRI has r ight ly

    emphas ised on human resource deve lopment as one of i t s major

    objectives.

    Schoo l of Weld ing:

    The school of welding at WRI was established in 1975 to provide education

    and tra ining in welding and allied field like NDT. The sc hool of weld ing isconducting three tier training programmes for engineers, technicians and

    artisans. Apart from comprehensive basic training courses, short term

    courses on specialised topics are conducted regularly. Further, tailor made

    courses designed to meet the speci f ic requirements of sponsoring

    organisations are conducted at WRI. Close contact with industry assures

    that the training is not only relevant to the current needs of the industries

    but also to prepare them for future developments.

    Faculty:

    The fac ulty is drawn from well qualified and experienced resea rc h staff in

    each specialised area of welding. In addition to the Institutes research staff,

    experts from other orga nisations are a lso invited. The c ourses are designed

    such that the trainees could benefit from their rich experience by group

    discussion and interaction between faculty and participants.

    Facilities:

    WRI has complete range of conventional and modern welding facilities like

    laser welding, friction welding, f lash butt welding, projection welding,

    resistanc e sea m welding, plasma spray system , synerg ic Time and twinMIG welding, AC/DC p rog rammable TIG welding, m ultipurpose c olumn &

    boom type SAW, tand em submerged arc welding, AC/DC variab le Square

    wave SAW, portable spot welding, MIAB welding etc . It has a m eta llurgical

    and mechanical testing laboratory, well equipped with x-ray stress analyzer,

    therma l cyc le simula tor, imp lant test eq uipm ent, SEM, low tem perature

    imp ac t (CVN) testing eq uipm ent, fatigue testing eq uipment Creep Testing

    eq uipm ent e tc . The NDT lab orato ry is eq uipp ed with m od ern testing

    facil it ies besides conventional X-ray, gamma ray, f luoroscopy and UT

    fac ilities. The sc hoo l of weld ing ha s 3 c lass roo ms fitted with up-to-date

    audio visual aids and a full fledged training workshop.

    The institutes library with more than 10,000 volumes and 35 period icals on

    welding and related subjects is accessible to the trainees. A hostel with

    moderate facility is available.

    Recognition:

    Since incep tion WRI has so far cond uc ted 80 basic courses, 386 short term

    courses, 70 Certified Welding Inspector Courses, 171 Special short termc ourses,114 NDT c ourses and Seven Interna tional Training Programmes on

    Welding Tec hnology for customers from India and abroad. A tota l of about

    15000 engineers and supervisors have been trained by WRI till date.

    Almost every major industry in both public and private sectors has made

    use of WRI to train their welding personnel. WRI has been recognized by

    Ind ian Boiler Board to c ertify welders as per IBR.

    Location of WRI

    Welding Research Institute is located in the industrial complex of BHEL.

    Tiruc hira p p a l li whic h is 15 km s. fro m Tiruc hira p p a l li town on the

    Tiruc hy - Thanjavur Highway.

    How to reach Tiruchirappalli?

    Tiruc hirappalli (a lso known as Tiruc hy) is about 320 Kms. south o f Chenna i.

    Number of trains and luxury buses from Chennai Egmore railway station

    op erate throughout the d ay and night. The trave l ta kes 6 to 8 ho urs.

    Tiruc hira p p a l li is a lso c on nec ted b y o vernight t ra in f rom Che nna i,

    Bangalore a nd Coc hin. Tiruc hirappalli is a lso c onnec ted by AIR.

    Pickup

    A ''BHEL'' bus will be available a t Tiruc hirappalli railway junction on the day

    of inaugurat ion morning around 05.30 hours and the previous day

    evening around 21.00 hours to pickup participants and drop them at WRI

    hostel.

    Conveyance

    Ta xi an d a uto ric ksha ws no rm a lly c ha rg e Rs. 350 /- a nd Rs. 250 /-

    respec tively to reac h WRI hostel from Tiruc hirappalli junc tion / bus stand /

    airport. Regular buses ply from the central bus stand near the railway junction and Chattram bus stand near Main Guard Gate.

    WRI Hostel

    All the c ourses are ''NON-RESIDENTIAL''. However, a /c and non a /c hoste l

    accommodation with common amenities is available at nominal charge

    on first come first-served basis, subject to availability. Internal transport

    between hostel and WRI will be provided freely.

    Hotels

    Partic ipa nts may make their own arrangements for stay in Tiruc hirappalli.

    A number o f good hote ls are ava i lab le around the cent ra l bus

    stand / Ra ilway Junc tion a t reasonab le tariff. Pa rtic ipa nts will have to

    arrange for their own conveyance, between the place of stay and WRI.

    Course Timings

    WRI functions 6 days a week from 08.00 hours to 16.30 hours, Sunday

    being the wee kly ho liday. The session tim ing will be from 8.45 hours to

    16.00 hours. Participants are requested to be present at WRI by 8.30 hours

    to complete the registration formalities on the inauguration day.

    Climate

    The m inimum and m aximum temperature range from 25 oC to 40 oC. Light

    winter clothing is sufficient during November to January.

    II Cancellation / Postponement

    a) If the nomination is cancelled before the last date of registration (One

    refunded.

    I. Welder training and qualification

    WRI of fers pract ical t raining to welders for a variety of job

    req uirem ents. The p rac tic al training is tailored to the spec ific need s of the

    individual welder under the close supervision of experienced instructors.

    Besides practical training, necessary theoretical inputs are also given.

    The tra ining workshop is equipped with fa c ilities for SMAW, GMAW,

    GTAW and SAW proc esses. Welding tec hniques and skills a re taug ht fo r

    plates, pipes and tubes in various positions. Welders are trained in variety

    of materials like Carbon steels, low alloy steels, stainless steels and non-

    ferrous materials. Materials and consumables for training in common

    grades are provided by WRI. More specialised materials have to be

    provided by the sponsoring company.

    The welders training is organized right through the yea r at WRI. The

    duration of the training depends on the initial level of the welder, his ability

    to acquire higher skills, the actual job requirements like material, process,

    position etc. After the training the welder can be qualified as per the

    req uirem ents of va rious codes like ASME, BS, DIN, IBR, EN 287 & IS, e tc .

    Suc h qualific ation in the presenc e of any testing a uthority spec ified by the

    customer is also possible.

    To finalise the c ourse content, c onsiderable interac tion with customeris necessary on materials, process, code, qualification requirements etc.

    The duration, c ourse fee a nd testing c harges will vary depend ing on these

    factors.

    The welders joining these c ourses should essentia lly have a n ITI

    certificate and also should also have an experience of minimum 3 to 5

    years. Moreover experienced welders having no specific qualification can

    also a ttend the p rog ramme g iven in the Table - 1.

    III. Organisation based training programme

    Orientation course in particular processes, materials, job and

    p osi tions a re a lso a rra ng ed a t the Sc hoo l of Weld ing fo r sp ec i fied

    durations. These c ourses are fully tailor - made to the needs of sponsoring

    organizations or individuals.

    IV. Training Charges

    The c harges are valid till 31.03.2012. Qualific ation tests to agenc ies

    like IBR, LRIS and others will involve additiona l charges, as applic able
