About Amor Jewellery Amor Jewellery is the main sponsor for this website. We at Amor Jewellery believe that

creativity of a writer can be seen by the way he/she writes short stories. We follow the

Note from the editors: We have to write about these guys because they are the ones who

send money each month to run our magazine. Otherwise, we would not care a damn

From the Editor’s Desk We are extremely delighted as we bring out our first edition of

WSD. In the future, we just wish to be known as a platform where

writer’s come and submit their short stories for the world to see.

There is a daunting task lying ahead of us and in today’s “instant”

world, people are spending more time watching things on screen and

losing interest in the traditional forms of books. In such a scenario, it is only best to move

the traditional form to the digital form that we have in front of you.

We, from the editorial team hope that you love our first edition and are open to any kind

of feedback to help improve ourselves. After all, it is you reader’s who make us what we

are.

About the selected short story & its author The following short story titled, “The day francais died” is written by Jack Normandy

with inputs and English language help from Zaheer Shaik. Jack Normandy is a French

citizen who learnt the English language quite late in life. However, being a voracious

reader, he has been acquiring good language skills and even attempting to write stuff in

English. This story is one of his first attempts to write in English.

The day francais died is a futuristic story in the year 2112 A.D. where languages have

lost their identity because of globalization. It is this fight and one person’s way of venting

out his feelings that give beauty to the story. Jack has given a nice perspective to the story

by creating a fictional character which may become a reality in the future. Enough of

giving away the plot of the story to you, we will let you start reading from here.

The day francais died Year 2112, 21st December

Francais = French language, such a beautiful language it was. 21.12.2112. What a date. A

day when the whole world is celebrating 100 years of the day the world changed. For

some, it was good as the foundation stone for one world was laid that day. For some, no

one knew the repercussions then, it started the obliteration of different cultures across the

globe.

21st December 2012, people thought the world will end. Luckily, it did not. Unfortunately

the world as we knew it ended. On that day, the 188-nation member of United Nations

decided to sit down and ratify a global acceptance of official languages of nations.

English, Spanish & Mandarin were chosen and made the official languages of the world.

English, being the most widely spoken, Spanish, being the most influential in United

States (the most powerful nation then) and Mandarin, being the official language of then

China (currently the Shanghai province & red flag province of the Great Chinese bloc)

made them the best contenders for the top post. No other language had even the slightest

chance.

With this ratification, it was made mandatory in every school across the globe to have

these three languages taught in the curriculum. Now, it is said that a general human being

can only have 3 languages in his / her mind at best. A fourth language, though present,

will not have a strong presence and may even get erased slowly and steadily. And this is

what exactly happened in the 20 years after the ratification. Languages started dying and

going extinct one by one. Only the big three remained and people started forgetting that

their ancestors had other language skills too.

Most of the languages died in the first 20 years and by the year 2050, apart from the big

three, only two other languages remained, Hindi & French. Even these were spoken in

some remote pockets across the globe and that too mostly as a fashion rather than for

everyday conversation. Hindi, being the language of the second most populous nation in

2012 and the most populous in 2040, could have survived its fate but died because of its

historical affinity to English. French survived because of the attachment to the language

and culture by its speakers. It was a joy to speak French back in 2012.

Even though it was a joy to speak French in the olden days, the language slowly lost its

sheen. However, the final blow came in the year 2064. A huge terrorist ring was exposed

WSD – WriteSomethingDude – www.writesomethingdude.com Creating a platform for writers to showcase their creativity

that was siphoning away millions of glocur (global currency) every year in order to

destabilize the global government and bring it shame. This terrorist ring was using the

French language as a means of communication as a form of code language. It was really

working well for them until one day a few fanatics within their organization wanted to

shoot to fame in front of the world. They spilled the beans and got the whole ring busted.

Of course, it is a completely different matter that the whistleblowers did get shot, not to

fame but by a firing squad.

This was the last straw on the camel’s back (I do not even remember any sayings in the

French language now). It completely drove the nail into the coffin and people started

hating anyone who spoke French. So, the language was not spoken anymore, not even in

homes by those few who had affinity towards it. I was one of the lucky few to have learnt

the nuances of French language before the 2064 incident and even though no one spoke

it, I developed it through the huge collection left to me by my father.

Today, on this fateful day when people are celebrating 100 years of globalization of

languages, I lie on my death bed thinking how francais will die with me. Being the last

person in the world to know a language is a heavy burden. The worst part of this burden

was the inability to share this beautiful language with anyone else in the world. As I write

this last page of my diary, I can only hope that sometime in the future, the language is

again revived by some like minded individuals who understand its beauty.

Epilogue – Jack Cousseau, the last person to have knowledge of francais, died on

21.12.2112 at 8:17 pm. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law who are French

illiterates. So, that my dear friends, is how francais died.

Website www.fmylife.com

This website puts up the everyday life stories of people around the globe. Whenever you

do something funny or embarrassing, you can put it up on this website. After that, people

give you a rating if it was bad or if you deserved it. Though, there is no control about the

posts being actual occurrences or being made up by people, they definitely are good and

compelling to read when you are getting bored. One of the best places to enjoy these

posts would be during free time in office. They also have other language versions.

Short film http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyB_U9vn6Wk

The title of the film is “Love Language”. This is a short film made by the Jubilee project

for a good cause. It is written & directed by Jason Y. Lee starring Christine N. Change

and Eddie Lee. The film of a 5 min length starts with two people meeting on a park bench

and the guy trying to chat up to the girl. The way they communicate and the feeling of

love between them makes up the core theme of the storyline and the end is quite

wonderful. The music by New Heights is the cherry on the pudding.

Submit a short film link If you have made a short film or come across one that you think the world should see,

send us the link at [email protected] and we will feature it in this column.

Obscene & pornographic content will not be featured. The final decision regarding the

content will be taken by our editorial team.

Please note that the short film should be of less than 15 minutes duration. If it is your

original creation, you can win Rs 1,000 cash prize if we feature it in our magazine.
