Finding Amy
Shades of red and purple tints the sky, the silhouette of swooping
birds scatters across the twilight horizon. As nightfall descends, afaint zephyr rues the golden fur behind my ears and caresses the
collar encircling my neck, which simply reads – ‘Scruy!.
"he distinct scrapes of my footsteps on the pa#ement echoes
through the gra$tied alleyway – taunts me, surrounds me and
reminds me of my lonely solitude. %iles from home, & am tempted to
turn back and admit defeat. %aybe my search for Amy is futile.
'hen & concentrate, & can still hear her coos and soft murmurs when
she nestled me into her lap and tussled my belly( her admonishingtone, like a sergeant, scolding me whilst wagging a small )nger side
to side, and her gentle sobbing as her slight body shuddered. &
ne#er did )nd out what caused Amy so much grief – & could only
oer my company as a consolation during those times.
Amy would gaze at me in a similar way to how she watched the
setting sun during our daily promenades – with a sense of sadness
and lo#e. 'here#er she may be, she probably misses gazing at the
sunset with me* it was our tradition.
+ut as time passed, her frame became more emaciated and her
absence more freuent. -er cerulean eyes lost the sparkle which
her father teased, were brighter than the ‘twinkle, twinkle little
stars!/, which she always sang about. -er times spent with me grew
less acti#e and li#ely, )lled with a sense of foreboding and
forlornness her seemingly tight smile couldn!t suppress.
& suspect that the detrimental emotions originated from the austere
building & entered with Amy that one time. &t e0uded a disconcerting
feeling of coldness and had a sinister – almost ominous – ambience
which raised my hackles. For se#eral days, traces of the bitter reek
of antiseptic and the putrid stench of disinfectant lingered e#ery
time & breathed.
And then Amy disappeared for so long. "he time passed
e0cruciatingly slowly and, like a stone wedged into a paw, each day
elapsed hurt more and more. & waited unwa#eringly at the front
gates, eager to catch the )rst glimpse when she returned.
+ut she ne#er did.

Spring departed and the aroma of the 1owers left with it, replaced
by the sweltering heat of summer. & still woke up to gaze through
the slits of the gate, waiting. +ut on one particular day, & gained the
courage to clamber o#er.
"he )rst days of roaming the street, & was )lled with 2u#enile
con)dence and e0citement. 3radually, after searching e#ery
cre#ice, slope and corner on the streets, my hopes of )nding Amy
dwindled. -a#e & not looked closely enough – ha#e & missed her4
+ut regardless, my pursuit was not deterred by my lack of success. &
knew she wouldn!t abandon me without reason, so & am certain she
is in danger.
5ow, as the breeze grows stronger and my determination remains
resilient, & continue my search – for Amy.
