How to ApplyAudition Guidelines for Entrance to the Department of Dance and Dance Talent Awards

IN-PERSON AUDITIONS:

Step 1 Apply for admission to the university and submit the Department of Dance Application to the Office of Admission. Your audition

will not be considered until you have applied to Chapman University via The Common Application.

Step 2 Call the Department of Dance office at 714-744-7040 to schedule an audition day and time. Appointments are scheduled October

through February. It is recommended to call early to secure a day and time as appointment days and times fill up quickly.

• Early Action applicants must have auditions scheduled no later than December 15.

• Regular Decision applicants must have auditions scheduled no later than February 15.

Step 3 Prepare a 2-4 minute dance solo demonstrating a wide range of your dance technique and artistry. It may be a dance that you

choreographed or a dance that someone has choreographed for you. (Please be sure to credit the choreographer.) If you have

skills in more than one dance form (jazz, modern, ballet, tap, etc.) you may wish to present two separate shorter pieces to

demonstrate your talent. Technical prowess, presence, musicality, expression and performance quality will be evaluated to

determine admittance to the Department of Dance as well as talent awards.

Step 4 On the day of your audition:

• Arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment time and warm up.

• Bring your music on CD or audio cassette. It is suggested that you bring a backup if you have burned your own CD, as some

CDs do not function on our equipment.

• Wear a leotard and tights or a unitard with appropriate shoes. Please do not wear skirts, T-shirts, shorts, sweats or costumes.

In addition, on the day of your audition bring:

• A Dance Resume which includes your training, teachers, performance and choreographic experience. You may want to include

awards and any summer scholarships you may have received. Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number and

last four digits of your social security number.

• A one-paragraph, typed Goal Statement highlighting your educational and career goals. For example: Where do you see

yourself in 5-10 years?

• Two Letters of Recommendation from teachers or professionals that have worked with you.

• A recent Photograph of yourself. All we need is a photo to identify you. Professional headshots or dance photos are not necessary.

Talent Scholarships in Dance

Dance majors are automatically considered for talent awards when applying to the program.

How to Apply

VIDEO AUDITIONS:

It is always preferable to audition in person. If this is not possible, you may audition by video. Please create a VHS video or DVD of

yourself dancing in a studio. Edited live performance videos are not acceptable. VHS videos or DVDs should include an introduction and

brief discussion of your dance experience.

Step 1 Apply for admission to the university via The Common Application and submit the Department of Dance Application to the Office

of Admission. Your video audition will not be considered until you have applied to Chapman University for admission.

Step 2 Call the Department of Dance office at 714-744-7040 to notify us that you are auditioning by video. Please specify if you are a

candidate for Early Action. ALL VIDEOS MUST BE POSTMARKED BY JANUARY 1 FOR EARLY ACTION AND FEBRUARY 15

FOR REGULAR DECISION.

Step 3 Prepare and videotape a 2-4 minute dance solo demonstrating a wide range of your dance technique and artistry. It may be a

• A Dance Resume which includes your training, teachers, performance and choreographic experience. You may want to include

awards and any summer scholarships you may have received. Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number and

last four digits of your social security number.

• A one-paragraph, typed Goal Statement highlighting your educational and career goals. For example: Where do you see

yourself in 5-10 years?

• Two Letters of Recommendation from teachers or professionals that have worked with you.

• A recent Photograph of yourself. All we need is a photo to identify you. Professional headshots or dance photos are not necessary.
