Writing a Memoir: Course Overview 1

Memoir: What will you learn? One of the most important skills required at college is writing: not just descriptive writing, but interesting, detailed, creative, and analytic writing. This course is all about writing: writing about yourself, about books you are reading, and passages you are listening to. We will read, write and listen every day, in class and for homework. We will share our writing with each other, give each other feedback, and learn to improve our writing by reading the work of other writers. The focus of our writing will be the genre of Memoir. We will explore, this genre in depth: What is it? Why do people write them? How does a writer choose what to include in a memoir, how to describe a life experience, and how to choose words and phrases that make their stories powerful to read? The culminating project in this course will be the publication of your own memoirs.

Imagine…

You are the son of a young woman from Wichita, Kansas and a young man from Kenya. They met and fell in love as students at the University of Hawaii. But when you were two, your parents separated, and your father moved first to Boston to study for a PhD, and then returned to Kenya. Your mother remarries, and your family moves to Jakarta, the Indonesian homeland of your new stepfather. When you are ten, your mother sends you to Hawaii to live with your grandparents so that you can take advantage of the better educational opportunities there. Your family enrolls you in a private, college preparatory school where you are one of six African-American students. In these first ten years of your life, you have lived as an African-American child in different cultures, different geographical locations, and amongst people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds as well as different socio-economic classes. For the next twenty years, these experiences, and the ones that follow, shape how you look at the world. When you are 34, your write your memoir, where you recount the story of your life, meditating on the themes of race and class, family and community. …This is at the heart of Barak Obama’s memoir.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

1. What are the elements of my story that should be told to others? 2. Why do humans desire to tell their stories to others?

Purposes of the Course There are 3 main purposes to this course:

1. Learn about the genre of Memoir. 2. Make good writing a habit and practice that you can undertake with little

effort: college students have to write a lot, quickly, and with style and precision. This course provides an opportunity to begin to develop strong writing skills.

3. Learn about yourself through telling your story. Teach others about who you are. Applying to college and setting on a career path is all about telling your story in a compelling way. Writing about yourself in this course will provide you with the opportunity to experiment with different ways to tell your story.

MODULE OVERVIEW MODULE ONE: GENRE IMMERSION AND GENERATING IDEAS This module is all about using your own stories and the stories of great memoirists to strengthen your reading and writing skills. In the next few weeks, you will participate in many activities designed to help you to recall significant memories, to write about them, and to connect them with one another. MODULE TWO: FRAMING AND ORGANIZING One of the most important and challenging aspects of the writing process is narrowing-down your ideas into a focused, purposeful piece of text. In module two you will center these your around a key theme, and then structure and order the ideas to create detailed plans and a first draft of your own memoir. MODULE THREE: REVISING AND PUBLISHING Revision is a critical stage of the writing process, and it is important to devote as much time to revision as you do to planning and drafting. However, revising your writing can be just as powerful as creating it. Module three’s lessons will guide you through creative revision activities that challenge you to think. Then, you will publish your memoir, and share it with readers. How will you show what you have learned? Here are a few of the many performance tasks you will complete in this course:

1. A Published Memoir: The seminal project for this course is a Published Memoir that will go through multiple drafts of the writing process.

2. Audio recording of a personal story: Create an audio recording of yourself telling a favorite personal story, modeled after the stories you will hear on the radio shows The Moth and StoryCorps. You have the choice to submit this story to the radio show for possible inclusion.

3. Important Person Description: Compose a description of a person who is important to you.

4. Glog: Create an on-line poster of your independent reading book. 5. Scene Writing: Write a scene about an event in your life 6. Timeline: Create a timeline of your life. 7. Memory Drawing: Draw or paint an image of one of your memories. 8. Self-Portraits: Create two self-portraits, one literal, and one

metaphorical.

How will you show what you have learned? Module 2 is composed of 3 College Prep Performance tasks and many Small-Scale Performance Tasks. Additionally, you will be writing daily in both your Writer’s Notebook and your Reader’s Notebook, and you will be assessed in large part based on your daily entries into these two notebooks. Finally, the module requires you to write about the Memoirs you are reading and listening to, in addition to writing about your lives.
