  • Writing Momentum’s

    TOP 10 WAYS TO

    GET YOUR BOOK

NOTICED by Agents, Editors & Readers

    CHRISTOPHER & GENA MASELLI

  • 5 Ways to GET NOTICED You’ve finished your book! Now it’s )me to get an agent’s or editor’s a1en)on. Here are our 5 favorite strategies for ge8ng posi)ve a1en)on—even if nobody knows your name.

A4end Writer’s Conferences There is no be1er way to get eyes on your work than by a1ending a writer’s conference. At these mee)ngs just for writers, you’ll not only get to learn from successful authors, but you’ll oEen also get to have one-on- one mee)ngs with agents and editors where you can pitch them your book. Pitch mee)ngs are oEen only 10-15 minutes, but they can change your life! A significant amount of our success has happened because of writer’s conferences—which is why we recommend hi8ng 2-4 a year if you can. Here's a list of writer’s conferences all around the world.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Most agents and editors allow you to submit your manuscript to them directly through their website. So do it! Look at books in your genre to discover who publishes them. Research those publishers, look for the submission guidelines on their website, or check out the latest Writer’s Market Guide. Once you confirm your book would be a good fit, submit a query. If you need help wri)ng a query or book proposal, check out Chris’ Proposals with Pizzazz course.

Get Mad—#pitmad! Some people call this one the best kept secret online. Pitch Wars’ #pitmad is a scheduled online pitching session to agents and editors through Twi1er. You only get 280 characters to try and get their a1en)on so use it well. More and more industry leaders are par)cipa)ng and people sell books nearly every round. Check out their Twi1er channel for full details on how to pitch your manuscript.

Enter to Win Want to boost your cred? Enter contests. Not only can you easily become an “award-winning author,” but placing in a contest gives you a no)ceable edge over the compe))on when you make your pitch. You may even win some cash. Find contests at writer’s conferences, at Writer’s Digest, and through compila)ons at Reedsy and others.

Do It Yourself Of course, you may also decide tradi)onal publishing isn’t for you. Today many writers are op)ng to self- publish their books which not only leads to greater control, but also can get a publisher’s a1en)on if your book really takes off. If you’re a first-)me author, we recommend trying to get tradi)onally published first, just so you receive good feedback and learn how the publishing industry works. But if you’ve had enough, or just want to do it yourself, self-publishing has its own rewards.

  • 5 Ways to GET NOTICED Your book is about the hit the streets! Whether you’re tradi)onally or self-published, now is when the real work begins. It’s )me to create interest in your book and build your plaeorm.

Get Your Social Groove on Social media is no longer just something fun to do in your spare )me. Now it’s part of your job. As an author, you can make the world aware of your work and build a loyal following by regularly pos)ng valuable content on Facebook, Twi1er, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and more. Social media can be a )me suck, so we recommend a scheduling tool like SocialBee for the bulk of what you do, and then respond to comments and post spontaneous content as the inspira)on hits.

Get Scheduled Once your book is in hand, don’t be afraid to approach local schools, libraries, podcasts, bookstores and writer’s groups to do speaking and readings. It may seem nerve-wracking, but remember that many of these places are looking for speakers and interviewees to fill their schedule. While you’re at it, don’t forget many bloggers love adding guest blogs to their own plaeorm—allowing you to tap into their ac)ve reader base for your own.

Update Your Amazon Author Page Did you know you have an Author Page on Amazon? Most authors don’t, but it’s there, ready for you to link your website, connect your blog, add videos and put all your books in one place. It’s a great place to let others know more about you and your books, and even follow you for updates. It’s also free. Claim and update your Amazon author page here.

Plan a Giveaway With copies of your books in hand (or available electronically) you can plan a giveaway through your website and social media sites. It’s a great way to build excitement about your book, let people know about you as an author and build your email list. Many people love using GoodReads to a1ract entrants, but you can also easily use your own soEware such as Rafflecopter, KingSumo or Gleam.

Go Live If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a million! Live videos on Facebook, Instagram TV and YouTube allow readers to get to know you like never before. Don’t know what to talk about? Share your general excitement about your new book, tell poten)al readers about fun Easter eggs in your work, tell people about your giveaway, talk about your wri)ng process and topic or even read a favorite passage from your book. Remember, the goal of these videos is to introduce yourself to poten)al readers and build your tribe. So be crea)ve…they’ll love it!
