Early attachments predict success in college, graduate school, and career

Success in college, graduate school, and career can be defined in many ways. Typically, these events occur in the early 20s to early 30s when individuals can be described by Erikson’s fifth stage of psychosocial development, intimacy versus isolation (Erikson, 1985). Therefore, success at this stage must include an ability to relate to potential romantic partners, roommates, and business associates. The purpose of this paper is to examine some of the research on early attachment to determine the impact it

quotation marks (“”).

Attachment theory also considers the impact of the early parent-child relationship on adult interpersonal functioning. As Hazen and Shaver (1994) further discuss the implications of attachment, they specifically discuss the two types of maladaptive attachment styles: anxious/ambivalent (preoccupied) and avoidant. They describe the anxious/ambivalent style as lacking confidence in the reliable responsiveness of others (p. 15). Further, they state, “It is manifested in intensified expressions of distress and anger and diminished exploratory activity.” (p. 15).

Long quotations (40 words or more) should be double-spaced in a block with no quotation marks. Indent 5

From these beliefs about the self (the internal working model), the individual has a guide to their thoughts, feelings, and behavior in subsequent close relationships.

Because of the interrelations among behavioral systems, malfunctioning in one system can cause dysfunction in another. Recall that, in studies with infants, attachment and exploratory behavior are

closely intertwined. Smooth functioning of the exploratory system requires a quiescent (satisfied)

attachment system… (p. 15). This suggests that attachment style effects exploratory behavior;
