LEARNING TARGET: You will be examining different genres of poetry
this week. After each day you will be able to communicate what characteristics each genre possesses and begin to write your own poems,
which abide by the characteristics and also make use of different poetic devices and your own poetic
style and personal experience.
POETRY WRITING WEEK
Monday: Intro to Ms. McKee
‘How to Live’ (Didactic poem)- characteristics, samples and personal writing.
Tuesday: Elegy poems – bit morbid, slightly depressing.
Wednesday: Ode poems- celebratory, not depressing!!
Thursday: Polishing and Editing your poems and choosing your best one which you will be annotating and writing an analytical essay about.
Friday: Reading and IRP Day
DIDACTIC POEMS
HOW TO LIVE= DIDACTIC POETRY
Didactic: intended for instruction; instructive: didactic poetry.

Characteristics: Moral lesson- what is right or good
Advice: What is the best way to live based on your life experiences or what you hope/should do.
Free Verse
Declarative, commanding
Don’t be afraid to get specific.
Strong Ending
Potential Poetic Devices: repetition, allusion, imagery, hyperbole
4 stanzas, 4 lines each- minimum of 16 lines

ELEGY POEMS
ELEGY POEMS
Elegy: a mournful, melancholy, or plaintive poem, especially a funeral song or a lament for the dead.
: a sad or mournful musical composition.
Characteristics: First person
Subject: typically an individual, but it can be anything that has passed away, no longer with us.
The poet associates the events of the deceased with events in his own life by drawing a subtle comparison.
Rhymes are often incorporated due to their origin as musical laments, but are not mandatory.
Poetic Devices: metaphor, simile, imagery, hyperbole
Access those emotions! (hyperbole)

ODE POEMS
Ode: a poem in which a person expresses a strong feeling of love or respect for someone or something
Characteristics: Must be directed toward someone/thing specific as though you were
speaking to them. “O___________” Thesaurus friendly Must praise different qualities of that one thing. Dynamic! Repeating lines Regular rhyme scheme- although no strict patterns. (abab) (abc) (abba) Formal tone: It takes the praise and celebration very serious Poetic Devices: hyperbole, metaphor, simile, rhyme, repetition 14 lines long
