The Elevator1853

An Elevator transports people and things. It’s a box that moves up and down between levels of buildings. Motors, cables, and gears power them. This invention kept people from having to use stairs. Elisha Graves Otis invented the elevator in 1853 in New York. It was a sweet invention because it could help handicap people and older folks who find it difficult to have to use or climb stairs.

 Dear Elisha Graves Otis

I wanted to write you a thank you note for

inventing the elevator brake. It saved many peoples

lives, and I like riding in them. It keeps people from

crashing in an elevator. Elevators help handicap

people from having to use the stairs. They like the

elevator because it is not as much going up the stairs.

 Your friend,

Carter Williams
