Autumn
.
Stimulus for Writing
‘Families Week’ writing opportunity
using a stimulus to evoke a family
memory. Class books created and
displayed in foyer. Writing
opportunities include wider school
community parents and grandparents
writing about memories of childhood.
Great response from families.
Stimulus for Writing
Staff inset On Bob Cox ‘Opening doors to
Quality Writing’. Year 3 delivered some
poetry units and reported an increased
enthusiasm from pupils. – Expectation for
rest of staff to plan a unit in the Spring
term.
SPAG
SPAG Toolkit - Discrete SPaG
lessons embedded across the school
to reinforce Spelling Grammar and
Punctuation.
Spelling
Spelling Bee - embedded across the school –
Celebrated weekly in key stage worship.
Impact – KS1 – the majority of classes have
seen an improvement in spelling scores. KS2 –
some classes are recording an improvement in
spelling scores; however there is a greater
fluctuation in results.
Book Scrutiny
English work scrutiny conducted. SLT English planning scrutiny
conducted. Book share conducted across all key stages; 2 stars
and a wish for each year group.
Learning Walks
Focus – to develop children’s confidence to work independently. Build
stamina for writing when working independently (Ofsted quote).
Focus - To carry out lesson observations and pupil interviews to monitor
how well we are facilitating this in lessons and progress the children are
making.
Network Meeting
Autumn network meeting attended.
Reading
A pupil voice questionnaire conducted for KS2. Reciprocal reading has been taking place in Year 3 for two years/
Year 4 for one year and this year has been rolled out to UKS2 to include Years 5 and 6. A cross section of six
children were interviewed from each year group.
The reciprocal reading sessions within guided reading are proving to be a success with the students. They are
enjoying the variety of roles and are reporting improvements in dictionary skills, team work, independence,
confidence, comprehension and ability to keep focussed.
30% would like to have an additional role so that all members of the group have a responsibility. It is therefore
suggested that an additional questioner role be created making two questioners for each reciprocal reading session.
Subject leader lead ‘Rising Tide’
INSET training – Engaging Hooks
and Starters.
Spring
Library
Library App introduced - 50% of books catalogued. Keyword search for pupils and teachers introduced.
Library volunteers regularly reading with reluctant readers. Years 5 and 6 children reading stories to Reception
and Year 1 children at lunchtimes. Lunch time debate club introduced, teaching core debating skills and developing
confidence. CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Children’s book shadowing scheme introduced.
Library licence introduced to year 4 children. Library catalogue increased by 1496 books. Library loans increased from 1289 to 3598. ‘Dotbooks’ introduced to
indicate slightly easier read for less confident readers.
Book reservation scheme introduced. Displays now reflect current curriculum topics, increased reading of non-
fiction books. ‘My favourite book’ (teachers) instigated as an incentive to broaden spectrum of children’s reading.
Stimulus for Writing
‘All Weather Court for Sale’ Persuasive writing opportunity using the
sale of the All Weather Court as a stimulus. Extended writing
opportunities, debates and presentation skills – Children presented to the
Governors. Email from Chair of Governors very impressed with writing
and passion of presentations. Teachers reported children and particularly
boys were really inspired to write.
Stimulus for Writing
Introduced new concept in writing planning – used resource of Bob
Cox Opening Doors to Quality Writing. Mixed response from staff –
definitely a KS2 tool. Year 3 and Year 5 were particularly enthused,
reporting a marked improvement in the children’s writing.
Bob Cox monitoring followed up in Spring 2. Year 3 and Year 5
reported marked improvements in the children’s writing; therefore,
there will be a continued commitment to these units next year.
Book Scrutiny
SLT English planning scrutiny conducted.
Network Meeting
Spring network meeting attended.
Summer
Learning Walks
Writing learning Walk conducted. There is evidence of some high quality writing on display around the school, with
some year groups displaying work from the children. There are opportunities to build self-esteem over writing with
‘WOW Work’ displays and ‘Work to Be Proud of’. These displays are fully inclusive with some year groups (notably
year 6) celebrating work from SEN children. Some year groups are highlighting the cross curricular value of
writing. The learning walk took place in week 3 of Spring B and some year groups were in the process of changing
a display. Expectation that by week 3 of a half term, there should be some evidence of children’s work. If classes
are working through a topic, then a ‘Learning Journey’ type display would ensure work displayed is up to date.
Action: Subject leader to share findings and expectations around writing displays in Staff briefing 16th March
2018.
Come to My Classroom
Staff Inset – used post it notes to highlight good
practice. Saw a marked improvement on writing
displays. Positive response from staff – increase
feel good factor/pride in classroom, plus a good
opportunity to magpie ideas.
Stimulus for Writing
Writing Event – Around the World in Seven Year
Groups. Writing fact files/travellers guides for a
chosen country. Incorporated art and DT to make the
event more cross curricular. Pupil vice questionnaire
results – children said persuasive writing skills and
stamina for writing improved, along with an increased
appreciate for the culture of the country. Pupils really
enjoy these writing events – Action: Continue to
develop next year.
SaTS
Practice SaTS highlighted evidence that children
are not secure with spelling rules. Action:
DHT/Literacy co-ordinator/assessment co-
ordinator to meet to develop spelling support
across the school
Book Corners

Laleham Church of England Primary School – Subject Leader Review for Science 2017/18
Autumn
Spring
Summer
Learning look with Headteacher and Link
Governor for science.
Subject leader courses attended looking at links with maths
and science. Recommended statistics lessons could be based
on their science and gave year 6 a selections of science
questions that contained maths.
Carried out moderation with other schools thus validating our
judgements.
2017-18 Aims:
To secure good progress of all pupils, including those of high
ability, by having knowledgeable staff delivering engaging
lessons.
To ensure coverage of curriculum shows progression across
the school.
To increase enjoyment of science by ensuring each year group
includes one WOW factor (extra-curricular event/trip per
year) to promote science.
A new Health and Safety in science
appendix written to go with amended
science policy, encouraging more
exciting investigative lessons
Lesson observations show motivated learning with
challenge for more able.
Science Boffins visit
promoted ‘WOW’
factor for science.
Key strengths were:
Displays in Key Stage 2 included challenge
questions and evidence of home learning.
Books were well presented with children
taking pride in their work, correcting
spellings of key vocabulary and responding to
marking feedback. Evidence of children working scientifically
with a variety of ways of recording their
learning - charts, tables, diagrams, photos
showing practical science taking place.
Evidence of longer pieces of quality writing,
particularly in LKS2.
Lots of evidence of scientific enquiry in
EYFS - investigation table and outdoor
learning.
Good progression from year 2 to year 6
(classifying topic).
Pupil voice showed children believed they
were challenged and quality of teaching was
good.
Incubator for
chicks bought,
creating ‘real life’
experiences in
KS1.
Progress against priorities – suggested new aims for next year.
Science teaching is good
Evidence of teachers undertaking online CPD to further subject knowledge
Attainment is up – meeting YEE for year 2 was 82% in 2018 compared to 73%
in 2017, and for year 6, meeting YEE was 93% compared to 88% in 2017.
Need to develop links with business and secondary schools to further develop
quality of teaching and learning.
“It’s hard sometimes but that’s good
as it’s challenging you to find out. “
“At the end of the topic or year, I
know so much more.”
“The teachers hook you in so that you
want to know more.”
Laleham Church of England Primary School
Subject Leader Review for RE and Worship 2017/18
Priorities for the year:
1.Develop further a broad and expanding RE curriculum enabling high levels of achievement and
ensuring challenge, depth and clear progression in RE teaching.
2. Develop further children’s engagement in their own spirituality.
3. Continue to ensure our school environment clearly reflects our Christian ethos.
Autumn This term, we launched the new LDBS syllabus for all year groups at a staff inset in September. The
new units of work each have their own series of learning questions (LQs) one of which is the starting
point for each lesson. This style has proved to be a useful focus and a benchmark for assessment.
At this inset, we also launched class ‘spiritual journals’; a large format, scrapbook style classbook to
encourage children to add their own thoughts as well as significant spiritual moments and learning
which has taken place within the life of the class.
LDBS network meeting attended in October. Action points – to support staff with the new RE syllabus.
I also met with local RE leaders at Ashford CE Primary on to discuss the progress of our individual
schools in the implementation of the new LDBS units of work.
Rev’ Chris visited reception classes to discuss
advent and the significance of the advent ring.
Year 4 led the
Christmas Service
for the whole
school and Year 4
parents at All
Saints Church.
Child and his mum, spent the afternoon with year 4 sharing the
importance of Diwali as part of their topic on Hinduism.
Spring
The iShare buddy activities were held in:
October (Sowing generously) bulb planting with
gifts of bulbs and planters from parents and
Notcutts.
December (Here I am to worship) buddies shared
sung worship with actions and dance moves!
Year 6 worship leaders led whole school Monday
worship on each of the iShare themes.
Advent calendar fun – every class had a Fairtrade
chocolate advent calendar, where every door told
the next instalment of the Christmas story (and a
Fairtrade chocolate!)
LDBS network meeting attended in February.
Action points – new recommended assessment spreadsheet given for trial. Years 3 and 4 to trial this
with the intention of using this across the school for the next academic year.
Book scrutiny – strengths: All RE books seen showed children taking pride in the presentation of their
work. There was a good range of activities recorded and evidence that the new LDBS material had
been appropriately adapted for the year group.
Areas for development: Make sure that reflections on learning are coded with the R symbol used
widely across the school in other subjects.
This year, KS2 changed to using A4 RE books, making them the same size as other subjects; this has
been a positive change.
iShare buddy activities:
February (follow God’s word) Children made a paper chain of heart shaped links with messages of
appreciation for their families.
April (Sacrifices) Children created bookmarks with the Easter message.
It was wonderful to see the daffodil bulbs around the school that were planted in the October iShare
buddy activity; they came into flower in time for our OFSTED visit.
Two more children join the Year 6 worship leader team; they lead whole school Monday worship on each
of the iShare themes.
Year 5 led the Easter Service at All Saints Church for the whole school and year 5 parents.
Year 4 visited All Saints to discuss Holy Communion with Rev’ Chris as part of their RE lesson.
Summer
The outdoor prayer space was relaunched in whole school worship in April. Children have
continued to enjoy using this space for personal reflection at break and lunchtimes, and with
their classes.
Progress against priorities.
Prayer corners are now well established across the school; all those
observed are at least good.
All have an age appropriate selection of Bible stories and Bible
reference books and prayer books as well as a class prayer book, which
children add their own contributions.
As requested by the school council, we introduced a ‘worry jar’ to each
prayer corner, where children can write their worries on a note (adding
their name if they would like their teacher to discuss it with them) and
leave them in the jar.
LDBS network meeting attended in June. Action points – to inform staff about the new SIAMS
schedule and to reflect on our school vision and how our school is ‘deeply Christian’. This was
communicated to teachers in our CPD inset in July.
A Learning Walk took place in June with Rev’ Andy. This included eight classes; many of the lessons
observed were the teaching of other faiths. Good questioning and opportunities for children to
discuss, reflect and make comparisons with their own and other faiths were witnessed.
Year 5 had a visit from a member of our local Islamic community, who spoke to the children about his
faith and what it means to live life as a Muslim.
iShare buddy activities were held in July (Calming the storm). Children designed and created their
own postcard size poster of the Bible verse from Psalm 46 v 1-2, for their bedroom, or as a gift for
someone in their family that they thought would appreciate it.
Year 6 worship leaders lead their final whole school worship. It has been a real pleasure working with
these young leaders and a real privilege to see them grow in their personal faith and spiritual maturity.
Assessment – the whole school used the new LDBS assessment spreadsheet for the summer term. End
of year results show that 89% of children across the school have met year end expectations in RE,
with 25% working at greater depth.
Progress against priorities
All class teachers have worked hard this year to make the lessons of the new LDBS syllabus work for
their classes. Some of the planning guidelines were easier to implement than others and there will be
some adjustment needed in the next academic year. However, the Laleham team, as always, have made
the RE learning a rich and exciting experience for our children.
New aims for next year…
The use of the ‘spiritual journals’ was rather patchy across the school. I would like to develop this next
year using examples of best practice and ideas of how to encourage children to see it as their journal
rather than it being the responsibility of the adults in the school.
It is always a pleasure when teachers send children to show me their RE work; they are always
enthusiastic and proud of their achievements!
Pupil voice interviews were held in July; it was a pleasure to
meet with children from ten different classes; they were all
keen to discuss their RE lessons! Key themes from their
conversations were that they enjoyed RE and thought that it
helped them understand what is important to people of other
faiths and this would help them in their later lives. They also
said it was important to be able to ask their own questions
about Christianity; this had helped them in their faith.

“I always want to
make my art
better” – Y3
Whole school curriculum overview
Subject Priorities
1 To continue to develop a growth mindset approach
through art in the school.
2 To consider use of IT/digital technology eg. an
animation project or the use of apple applications on an
iPad.
3 To ensure a wide range of engaging activities are
planned to cover the curriculum and to develop a range
of skills.
Progress against priorities & suggested new aims for the
year:
1 Children are very good at discussing their artwork and giving
constructive feedback to their peers.
2 IT is beginning to be used within art by taking photographs of
compositions and in KS1 using paint to create pictures. Moving
forward, it would be good if class teachers could include IT
within at least one of their projects throughout the year.
3 Within KS2 art lessons, a varied and balanced curriculum has
been planned to give children a range of experiences. An
overview of the year was developed to identify any gaps in
learning. In preparation for class teachers taking over the
teaching of art, it would be helpful to have an updated yearly
overview planned with examples of projects to be completed. In
addition, it would be beneficial to continue to develop ‘art week’
style opportunities alongside the English/maths weeks.

To continue to develop teachers’ confidence
and planning of DT in order to create a
successful curriculum event in the summer
term.
To ensure that children feel heard and
supported in their DT learning and to be able
to use their autonomy when designing and
making.
Art and D&T Week
Children cooked a snack or dish linked
to the country that they were
learning about for the writing focus
week ‘Around the World in 7 Year
Groups’.
Progress against priorities
Raised profile of D&T and cooking
across the school.
Successfully created an Art and
D&T week which linked to our
themed writing week.
Teachers are more confident to lead
and complete D&T projects.
Suggested aims for next year
1. Encourage all teachers to link their
topic lessons with a cooking activity.
2. Create a link between themed maths
week and D&T.
3. Conduct pupil voice interviews to
discuss effectiveness of D&T
throughout the school.
