around the world was held in Quebec City. Among the topics addressed were the



common reference standard. A few weeks earlier, at the World Congress of the

International Federation of Teachers of French (FIPF), I had the opportunity to

discussions, we felt the time had come to provide an update on the linguistic

Although absences related to mental health problems are, for the most part,addressed in group wage-loss indemnity plans, the financial and human impactsof this type of problem can also be reflected in the number of claims that workerssubmit to the Workers' Compensation Commission. For example, between 1990and 1997, the number of claims accepted by the Commission de la santé et de lasécurité du travail du Québec (CSST) as workplace injuries related to stress,burnout or other psychological factors almost doubled, jumping from 530 to 994cases. The amount of payouts also increased from $1.5 million to $5.1 millionannually
