Production Aims

For my Film Studies F634 coursework, my aim is to produce a fve minute

short flm sequence, illustrating the ways in which the representation o 

!lack teenage males has changed over the past "# years in !oth $ritish

and %ollywood flms& 'n the past, !lack teenagers have !een represented

as violent and aggressive& They are portrayed as the antagonist who gets

deeated& ' managed to plan a thesis that the representation on !lack

teenage males has changed over the years in which ' !egan to write a

three thousand words essay e(ploring my topic o the representation o 

!lack teenage me in media te(t& ' e(plored flms such as Kidulthood )**6

which is a $ritish flm making comparisons with +oach +arter )**# which

is a %ollywood flm as well as comparing it to more recent flms such The

hunger ames )*") showing the change in representation o !lack

teenage men compared to teenager rom other races&

 The idea in which ' have come up with is to present a fve minute flm

ocusing on an "- year old .sian male who is a part o a gang& /y idea will

!e ocused on creating a sequence that will !e !ased on the teenager,

.mir and his struggles o choosing the wrong pathway to ollow and him

trying to make the right choices& ' have researched a num!er o media

products, which ' will !e a!le to incorporate elements rom into my fnal

production& ' frst watched 0Kidulthood1, primarily ocusing on how the

male teenagers are represented and the directors use o costumes and

props as well as their role within the flm overall& '1ve particularly chosen

this flm as ' !elieve the main character Trevor is portrayed in a less

stereotypical manner or an ethnic teenager as although he is an anti2

hero, at the end o the flm he chooses to 0spare1 Sam1s lie !y telling his

riends to not go ater him& ' will however, !e presenting the character

 Trevor in my flm in a more stereotypical way& 'n Kidulthood, the main

antagonist Sam is a tall !lack male who has an intimidating look a!out

him ' will !e trying to ollow this in my production !y making the character

 Trevor a tall !lack male who looks intimidating to the general pu!lic& .s

well as this, ' also looked at other .) productions, e(ploring 0+hoice1,

which ocuses on a teenager, inuencing my prime location settings& The

director used a !edroom with a single !ed as one o their prime locations,

emphasising on the main protagonist1s loneliness as well as !eing a!le to

deliver microelements such as mise2en2scene more clearly& Thereore, '

thought ' should use a room with a single !ed as well as have one main

character, ocusing on more o a personal perspective o the main

character&

!e using in my production to emphasie on the change o teenagerepresentation& The location used will represent the !ackground o thecharacters, reecting on their up!ringing& .s well as this, their costumewill reect on the type o person they are& They wear dark colours and aremostly covered head to toe representing tem as 0gangsters1& The locationis another actor which will !e used to communicate the messages andvalues especially the scene where .mir kills /ichael&

7verall, ' aim to produce a flm that not only provides my audience with ameaningul sequence !ut a powerul message which will !e mainly !edelivered !y the main character .mir, through dialogue&
