WÄRTSILÄ OIL & GAS SYSTEMS AS

Gas Recovery Solutions Zero Flaring

Baku October 2013

ZERO FLARING SYSTEM

A system for Zero Flaring enables the recovery of the gas that would normally

be flared during normal, stable production mode of the facility.

The system must be able to immediately and automatically return to flaring

mode when needed because of major process upsets or hazardous incidents.

The system will:

-Capture the gas normally flared (close flare line and provide alternative

route)

-Gather and boost the recovered gas if needed to meet system pressure

-Route the gas back into existing process or to new gas utilization system

-Provide automatic return to flaring when needed

-Ignite the gas at flare tip when returning to flaring mode

ZERO FLARING SYSTEM

Main features:

– Closed flare line

– Substantial reduction of CO2 & NOX emissions

– Increased profit due to the sales value of flare gas and reduction in CO2

tax (if applicable)

– Increased flare tip lifetime

– Flaring available upon demand

BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE SYSTEM

Design of the Flare Gas

must be done to the

highest safety

standards.

Compression systems – compressor selection

• Typical compression solutions for natural gas application.

• We have experience from ejectors, blowers, screw compressors and liquid ring compressors

LOW PRESSURE GAS RECOVERY - CHALLENGES

• Low suction pressure

• Variations in suction pressure

• Variations in flow rate

• Gas composition – varying

• Gas composition – dew point

• Gas contamination - particles etc

LOW PRESSURE GAS RECOVERY - SOLUTIONS

The challenges can only be overcome by proper system design:

• Proper characterization of gas composition and flow rates

• Selection of right type of compressor

• Selection of right control philosophy

• Proper gas treatment

• If needed, gas pre-boosting

• If needed, gas treatment

UTILIZATION OF RECOVERED GAS

In some cases (like remote areas) the gas can not simply be exported

through an existing pipeline, alternative utilization can be:

• Local electricity production (gas to wire)

• Local production of clean water (desalination of sea water or cleaning of

river/lake water)

• Mechanical power (drivers of pumps, compressors)

• Fuel gas for heaters

Economic gain in these cases can come from replacing use of diesel or

imported electricity.

For larger gas volumes:

• Convertion to LNG for transport

• Compression to CNG for transport

• Extraction of LPG components from gas (propane, butane)
