WS410
The WavionTM WS410 Spatially Adaptive Wi-Fi
Access Point transforms wireless metropolitan
area networks by overcoming the most chal-
lenging barriers to metro Wi-Fi deployment.
The WS410 uses patented Wavion technology
to take Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO)
smart-antenna techniques to a new level,
employing advanced digital beamforming to
dramatically enhance IEEE 802.11b/g wireless
networks. The access point delivers the range,
coverage, capacity, indoor penetration, and return
on investment that make metro-scale outdoor
wireless networks practical and profitable.
The range of the WS410 covers two to three
times the area of conventional Wi-Fi Access
Points. Superior range at each node means the
network can be scaled to reach a larger group
of users, yielding higher subscriber revenues
at lower cost in terms of equipment and oper-
ating expenses. In addition, networks with
ranged-optimizing WS410 access points are
simpler to install and easier to maintain.
With greater range also comes more and better
coverage. The WS410 provides users with a
powerful and high quality signal that is not
dependent on line-of-sight positioning, and is
highly resistant to interference. This results in
far fewer dead spots and helps eliminate dis-
ruptions caused by both fixed obstacles and
changes in the environment. Mobile users get
stronger connections with fewer associations
between client and access point while the cli-
ent is in motion. And network providers can
offer a higher quality of service without
increasing access point density.
WS410 access points also increases the
throughputs and the capacity of the network,
serving more users per node and boosting
throughput for each user. Users can be granted
adequate bandwidth for all their applications—
now, and in the future as more users and
bandwidth-intensive applications are added to
the network.
High bi-directional link gain allows the WS410
to penetrate buildings and walls better than
conventional access points, enabling full net-
work access for people—where they live, work,
learn, and travel. Deeper indoor penetration
also helps eliminate the need for separate
indoor Wi-Fi networks.
Wavion technology makes metro Wi-Fi infra-
structures significantly less costly to install,
operate, and maintain. Providers can save on
capital and operating expenses, accelerating
return on investment and making metro wire-
less services affordable for a broad range of
municipalities and enterprises. A WS410
deployment needs fewer units, and mini-
mizes the need for expensive installs in pre-
carious or inconvenient sites.
WAVION’S BREAKTHROUGH DIGITAL BEAMFORMING TECHNOLOGY ENABLES SERVICE PROVIDERS,
COMMUNITIES, AND ENTERPRISES TO DELIVER SUPERIOR WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY WITH FEWER
ACCESS POINTS—AND LOWER COSTS.

WS410Transforming Metro Wi-Fi
Conventional metro Wi-Fi access points are based on a sin-
gle radio and diversity antenna, and use commoditized
chipsets designed for indoor applications. However, to meet
the more stringent demands of outdoor wireless operation,
metro Wi-Fi networks require access points equipped with
powerful technologies and custom-designed ASICs
designed specifically for metro-scale implementations.
The Wavion WS410 access point uses six radio transceivers
and six antennas, and employs advanced digital beam-
forming to optimally focus radio energy to and from network
clients on a per-packet basis. This advanced technology
provides significant performance gains for any off-the-shelf,
802.11 standards-based Wi-Fi client.
The WS410 access point’s intelligence resides in custom-
ized ASICs and embedded software engineered to optimize
operation in metropolitan-wide environments. The ASICs
tightly integrate beamforming signal processing with the
PHY and MAC network layers, incorporating advanced
algorithms that continually compensate for dynamic
outdoor conditions.
DIGITAL BEAMFORMING ADVANTAGESThe key to highly effective beamforming is the ability to exploit
the different propagation paths, or multipaths, that carry data
to and from the users, so that the signals in the different
paths combine coherently. This results in increased link
gain and better non-line-of-sight operation.
The improved bi-directional link gain can be used to
increase the range of the node, enabling deployments
that require only one-third the number of access points as
conventional installations. Or, alternatively, providers can
use the greater range to increase the throughput of the
network without having to add equipment. Higher link
gain also provides much better indoor penetration. This
reduces the need for specialized customer premises
equipment (CPE), a major cost for service providers that
can undermine the expense and support structure of metro
Wi-Fi installations.
In addition, digital beamforming offers greater interference
resilience due to its inherent spatial directivity. And it permits
robust links to fast-moving mobile users because of the
technology’s powerful diversity characteristics.
Wavion technology brings a new level of performance to metro Wi-Fi networks by:

A Metro Wi-Fi Breakthrough
Wavion Spatially Adaptive Access Point Wavion breaks through the barriers of conventional Wi-Fi solutions by providing seamless, ubiquitous broadband service for the mobile population.
SCALABLE VOICE OVER WI-FI The WS410 provides strength and clarity of voice
transmissions by reducing latency and jitter. The higher
throughput offered by the WS410 also contributes to voice
quality by minimizing delays.
SUPERIOR MOBILITY SUPPORTThe WS410 supports mobile users by tracking them on a per-
packet basis to ensure highest performance at all times.
SSID, VLAN, AND SECURITY SUPPORTThe WS410 supports up to 16 Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs)
and up to 16 virtual LANs (IEEE 802.1q VLANs) for whole-
sale and retail services. Different security options can be
associated to each VLAN.
To prevent unauthorized network intrusion, the WS410
supports Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and is software upgrad-
able to WPA2 Enterprise (IEEE 802.11i) security methods.
COMPREHENSIVE MANAGEMENT TOOLSThe WS410 Spatially Adaptive Access Point is a highly
manageable device with a complete suite of remote
management capabilities, including web-based configura-
tion and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
traffic monitoring with a full set of system performance and
switching statistics. The onboard management system
features an easy-to-use graphical user interface.
VERSATILE IMPLEMENTATIONOne WS410 can serve up to 254 clients. Ruggedized and
weatherproof, the access points may be mounted on light
poles, rooftops, or any other suitable outdoor location, and
can be easily integrated with other backhaul options.
