Proposal Prepared by the English Language Academy, University of Auckland.

The English Language Academy at The University of Auckland, New Zealand welcomes the opportunity to respond to the request for a proposal from a University group.

The English Language Academy

The English Language Academy (ELA) was established by The University of Auckland as a provider of English Language courses. The courses offered by the ELA are supported by the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Applied Language Studies and Linguistics in The University of Auckland. The ELA provides academic and general English language preparation for tertiary level study, as well as specialist and customised English courses.

The ELA is located beside the University’s central city campus. It provides a modern and dedicated learning environment for students. Students from up to 30 countries study full time at the ELA and a broad cultural and linguistic experience is available to all.

The ELA is an accredited IELTS test centre, Cambridge TKT and CELTA training centre. All of the staff are highly experienced ESOL teachers and possess postgraduate qualifications in TESOL or Applied Linguistics.

The University of Auckland is a world class, international university. It is the largest university in New Zealand and the top ranked research university.

The Programme – Summary Overview

The Programme Aims

The programme consists of a four-week intensive Teacher Training programme designed to increase the knowledge and competence in communicative approaches to learning and teaching. It will also increase confidence and awareness of participants’ own language use and can be specifically designed to prepare teachers for the Cambridge ESOL TKT Modules 1, 2 and 3. The course is highly practical, placing considerable emphasis on hands-on techniques.

Programme Outcomes

The programme is designed to increase the overall English language proficiency of all participants. All participants will be awarded upon completion of the programme a Certificate of Completion and a detailed report from the English Language Academy. Students’ progress will be assessed at agreed intervals and reports can be forwarded via

email by agreement. Students will also receive three separate certificates from Cambridge ESOL with results for the TKT module 1, 2, 3 if they choose to take the exam.

The Programme – Structure and Content (sample of a 4-week Teaching Training programme)

Session 1: 8:30-10:30 & 10:45-12:45 (20 hours)*

Session 2: 1:00-3:00 & 3:15-5:15 (20 hours)*

This programme can be adapted to suit the needs of the group.

The ELA has a state-of-the-art Self-Access Centre for all students to engage in self-directed study to work on their English language proficiency in their own time.

It will be available to the participants for their use outside of the formal Teaching Programme. It gives students access to a large number of language learning resources, information and materials. It also guides and helps them to carry out needs analyses, set goals and select appropriate learning materials and activities. In this way, it contributes to the development of skills for successful self-directed learning. Staff are available to provide assistance. Language learning resources include language CD ROMs, graded readers, DVDs with subtitling, videos, dictionaries, etc.

The English Language Academy at The University of Auckland complies with the NZ Government’s Code of practice for International Students in all respects. A copy of the Code is available on the website of the NZ Ministry of Educationwww.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international. The ELA will designate a contact person for the group for the purposes of non-academic advice or pastoral care.

Accommodation

Homestay can be arranged utilising professional placement services. Homestay accommodation can provide a student with ongoing support in the English language and in learning about Western culture. Families are selected on the basis of providing such support and are experienced in caring for students from many different cultures.

The following are the main criteria for homestay placements:

The family is English-speaking The family is able to provide a well-furnished single room for the student Dietary requirements of the student are taken into account Breakfast and dinner are provided Mon – Fri and Breakfast lunch and dinner at

weekends.

Other accommodation options adjacent to the University are available. Detailed information can be provided on request.

Health and Welfare

The University Health Centre offers General Practitioners who are available for general and urgent consultations throughout the day. There are also Nurse Practitioners and administrative staff. A counselling service with trained counsellors is also available. All international students are required to have approved medical and travel insurance arranged through The University of Auckland. This insurance covers the costs of visits to the doctor, emergency dental treatment, and hospitalisation costs.

Prayer facilities

The University has a Muslim prayer room with washing facilities, and there are several mosques located in various city suburbs. There is an interdenominational Christian chapel on campus.

Travel and Health Insurance

New Zealand Law requires that each student studying in New Zealand should have adequate travel and health and personal effects insurance cover. Cover under the University plan can be included in the Programme costs. Each student is responsible for checking the Schedule of Benefits and declaring all relevant information to the insurer. Half Day trip: Honey Centre & SheepworldTravel by coach to the North. Short stop at the Honey Centre to sample a wide variety of New Zealand honey. On to Sheepworld to hold the new lambs and see their parents perform in a show. ELA chaperone provided.

Half day trip: Become a Bee Keeper! (Available Sept-March only)New Zealand honey is the most famous honey in the world! Come and earn about the honey making process and how bees ‘talk’ to each other to make this happen. An exciting hands-on day where you get to see how natural beekeeping works. Day trip: City Tour and Kiwi Valley Farm Orient yourself with the sights of Auckland and then experience a real New Zealand Farm at the Kiwi Valley Farm Park. Pat and cuddle the lambs, piglets, chicks, ducklings and rabbits. You will also feed animals, take a horse or pony ride and experience the kiwi maze and hidden caves. ELA chaperone provided.

Day trip: Auckland City Explorer The Auckland Explorer Bus is a HOP ON HOP OFF sightseeing tour visiting Auckland's big 14 attractions. The bus has full commentary and stops off at places such as the Bastion Point Lookout, The Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Parnell Rose Gardens. Cost includes admission to Kelly Tarltons Underwater World and the Sky City Tower and fish and chips on the beach in Mission Bay for lunch. ELA chaperone provided.

Day trip: Kayaking on Waiheke IslandTake in the views of the Hauraki Gulf islands on the ferry to Waiheke. Explore the island by Kayak and play games and have a BBQ on the beach.

Day Trip: Beach Horse-riding and Cultural Activities A one hour horse ride on the beautiful Pakiri beach followed by lunch and a sheep show at Sheep World. Then visit the famous Honey Centre at Warkworth to see New Zealand’s largest display of live bees, and a huge range of honey products and how they are made. ELA chaperone provided.

Weekend Trip: Bay of IslandsTravel to the beautiful Bay of Islands by bus and experience an exciting boat trip to the scenic Hole in the Rock, hopefully accompanied by Dolphins along the way. Experience kayaking to Haruru falls and take a tour of Waitangi, the famous grounds where the Treaty was signed. All meals and accommodation included. ELA chaperone provided.

Weekend Trip: Waitomo and RotoruaTravel by bus to Waitomo Caves and then on to the Big Apple for lunch then onward to Rotorua, centre of the geothermal region which is rich with Maori culture. On Saturday Night experience a traditional working Maori, sample a ‘hangi’ and take part in a Maori cultural performance. Also visit the Agrodome for the famous Rotorua sheep show and see some of Rotoruas geothermal wonders. All meals and accommodation included. ELA chaperone provided.
