PRINCIPAL’S REPORT   Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff and Students. In week six of this term we held our Farewell Assembly for Tony Lunniss. It was good to see the staff, students and the broader community acknowledge a principal who has driven positive change at our school over the last few years. It is exciting to see that his hard work and innovative leadership has been recognized by winning the position as Director, Review, Improvement and Accountability in Central office. Being able to celebrate his success, to acknowledge his leadership at Wirreanda Secondary School and to farewell Tony was important. Thank you to the Governing Council members who attended. The students spoke well, the performances were excellent and the catering by the Hospitality students was exemplary.  As a school community, we wish him every success in this new role and thank him for his leadership over the last six years.   At the assembly we acknowledged students who had shown Growth Mindset characteristics in their approach to life and to learning.

achievement and post school success. Every lesson or day of school a student misses is a lost opportunity to learn. Consistent attendance provides the best opportunity to learn and demonstrates other valuable characteristics such as responsibility, resilience and perseverance.  Course Selection day was hugely successful with a range of support offered in the Learning Hub. The VET booth was very busy all night and the WAVE staff was able to support families recommended for flexible learning options. The University stall was also a great success. All the year level teams were able to productively support families and the Home Group teachers in their choices for 2016.  Another feature of this term was the two week visit of Koishikawa Secondary Education School students. This year marks the eighth time that we have been involved in this visit and we were excited to meet this new group of students. As in previous years, Sue Bogumil, our International Education Manager, has done a tremendous job in working closely with our community to find Homestays for our Japanese visitors. Her wonderful organization and management of the visit each year, ensures the success of the program. This year, Ralf Pirone and Rebecca Cousins delivered the Koishikawa program and a group of enthusiastic and committed buddies helped the Koishikawa students learn and enjoy their time in Australia.  Week 5 was Science week and the science staff did not disappoint. The interactive displays in the Lecture Theatre and in the science lab were great. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hope the students did as well. I appreciated the effort the staff had gone to.  Our last Staff Conference for the year was held on Tuesday 25th of August. The focus for the day was on further developing the Australian Curriculum. Over the last three years we have transitioned to all areas delivering the Australian Curriculum across Years 810.  Staff spent the day working in curriculum teams to develop and finalise unit and assessment plans and discussed future directions in regards to assessment and reporting and moderation etc. The morning session whole staff looked at how we use data for learning, with time spent on looking at AE achievement grades from Semester 1. Feedback provided around this included moderation processes and future work on Task Design.   Planning for next year is well underway in a range of areas including timetabling, staffing and the budget. We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with you as part of the Wirreanda secondary School community.

As a school group they                       organised a Health Expo on Friday 28 August. They invited health                     agencies and providers to come into the school to promote the type of                         support they give to adolescents and the community. This year we had the following organisations present to students from                     year 812  The Sammy D Foundation: who promote safe partying  SAPOL: drug, alcohol and safety education  Shine SA: safe sexual health and relationships  Anthony Yates: Indigenous health and community The Year 12 group is responsible for the organisation and running of the                         event on the day and also for completing an evaluation of the Expo's                         effectiveness. how much information is taken in and how effective the speaker was at                         getting their messages across. The Health Expo went well and there was a lot of positive feedback from                           both the presenters, who were really impressed with our Year 12 students                       and the students who attended the Expo. Thanks to the canteen who provided the morning tea and the staff who                         supported the event. Libby Maxwell and Alicia Dean Year 12 Health Teachers  WEAR IT PURPLE DAY In 2015 our school pledged to build awareness in tolerance and acceptance towards all people no matter their sexuality. As part of the Student Voice team at Wirreanda Secondary School we believe we need to give a voice to all our students and “Wear it Purple Day” shows that our school supports the wellbeing and inclusion of all students regardless of sexual orientation, race, gender or religion. It is our belief that all students be engaged in learning and that wellbeing plays an instrumental role within this. This year we again held a “Wear it Purple” day on Friday 28 August. We invited special guests from Shine SA and the wider community to make “Wear it Purple Day” significant and to engrain it into our annual wellbeing calendar. We encouraged students to wear purple to show their support for the LGBT community and to encourage equality. Wirreanda continues to embrace wellbeing as part of their commitment to encouraging tolerance in our school. Cara R School Captain  WIRREANDA CAMBODIA PROJECT On Saturday 29 August at 7am the sun was rising on what was to be a warm winter's day. A group of Wirreanda students, staff, parents and friends made their way to the front of the Bunnings store at Marion. After setting up the tent the BBQ was fired up and the air was filled with the smells of onions and sausages being cooked on the grill. For the next 9 hours, though numerous crew changes, the grill was in constant use. Sausage after sausage handed to the hungry and appreciative public. When the day ended and the final tally was made all the hard work was worth it. We made $2232.15 (just for interest this works out to be about 1 sausage sold every 30 seconds!). A BIG thank you to all those that made this possible; • Everyone who took some time out of their Saturday to take orders, cook meat and onions, wrap the sausages in bread set up, pack up and all the other jobs inbetween.

Geography Excursion

Kirk Dixon ScienceTeacher  YEAR 12 METAL ENGINEERING Year 12 student Brandon L can now take home his custom built 7 by 4 box trailer. Brandon was the first student to complete his trailer this year. He started building the trailer in term 2 after completing an investigation into trailer design. During the investigation he looked into features and specifications of trailers and made decisions about the specific features he wanted to include in his trailer. He added features to his trailer that included  a stronger draw bar, spare wheel, fold up jockey wheel and extra tie down points. He had the trailer painted in grey. It  is a fantastic  final product. The trailer passed the engineering inspection and is now road legal and registered. He has already used the trailer to move a fridge for his family. Student James S has also just completed his trailer. He has obtained his VIN number from the Registrar of Motor Vehicles and is in the process of organising the necessary permits to tow the trailer to the engineering company that will inspect the trailer before final registration can occur. The course has been very successful this year with 7 trailers being on the way to being completed Jane White Technology Teacher  YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION The Geography Faculty at Wirreanda Secondary School are constantly looking for interesting ways of challenging our students and widen their perspectives on the world around them. A key way we do that is by undertaking field trips that link with the areas they are studying. Three classes of Year 10 students recently ventured along the coast to discover more about the ways we manage and maintain our beaches, and the systems that support them. We visited Hallett Cove, Kingston Park, Brighton, Glenelg, Adelaide Shores and the Torrens Outlet.  At each location students were asked to observe the area and provide examples of natural and human processes. They learned about the prehistoric geological history of the coastline at Hallett Cove and the importance of the coast has for Indigenous peoples at Kingston Park. They were fortunate to see the sand pumping system in action at Glenelg and Brighton. The information they collected will help them with their ongoing assessment and the experience has helped them better understand their own environment. Brett Whittaker  Geography Teacher

 SPORT YEAR 10 BOYS BASKETBALL Students from Wirreanda Secondary School recently played a close game of basketball against rival Woodcroft College. There was never more than a 6 point difference between the two teams throughout the whole match. Jaiden W led the way for Wirreanda with his cool head and leadership, scoring 20 points for the game. Great defensive efforts by Nick R and Jake M under the hoop minimised the influence of their taller team. Woodcroft hit a 3 pointer with a minute to go and took the lead by 1 point with 30 seconds to go. Jaiden W had control of the ball and took it to their defence, drew the foul and finished off both foul shots to bring home success to Wirreanda as the siren went. What a finish! This demonstrated the importance of hitting your free throw shots. Special mention must go to two Year 8 boys, Mark P and Akira W, who stepped up and handled themselves very well against the bigger Year 10 boys. Ben Woodhouse Coach YEAR 9 KORFBALL  On Thursday 27 August our Year 9 SSC Students (plus a few of our Year 8students) travelled to ETSA Stadium to compete in an Interschool Korfball Tournament. For those who don’t know, Korfball is a great game with many transferrable skills to Netball, Basketball and Football and for our SSC students it was a chance to compete and develop some important teamwork and ball skills. We entered two Year 9 mixed teams into the competition which comprised teams of all ages from a range of schools across the state. Although often much younger than the other teams in the competition, Wirreanda showed some great skills, winning one game and losing by only 2 points to Tatachilla, who played in the Grand Final against Sacred Heart. It should be noted that the Tatachilla team was entirely comprised of Year 11 and 12 students. The game of the day however was the derby between Wirreanda Red and Wirreanda Blue. the game was won by the blue team after the two 12 minute halves, but it was by the smallest of margins  1 point! A big thank you to all the students who participated on the day and to Michael Quin for coaching the Blue Team. Dan Gale Coach

Outdoor Education Camp 

 SPECIALIST SPORT COURSE COACHING INFORMATION Each Friday in weeks 4 to 7, the entire SSC group has been taking part in specialist coaching sessions in their sport of choice. The cricketers have been working with Thalia McGrath, one of our SA Scorpions, while our soccer players have been refining their skills with Tiarn Powell from the Australian WLeague. Hayley Edge, Garville’s State League Captain has continued to work with the netball group, while our football group has been on the oval, rain or shine, with Michael Quin  Division 1 A Grade footballer and also one of our dedicated student teachers. The basketball group worked with Ben Woodhouse and the Dancers with our Year 12 dance teacher, Tash Thornton. We also had another dedicated group of students who worked in our new Strength and Conditioning Space, affectionately known as the SHED  Strength, Health, Education, Dedication. All students have worked extremely hard over the four week coaching block, some taking time out of other lessons to be a part of this important learning experience. Thank you to all of our coaches and our keen SSC students for their continued efforts within and outside of the course. Dan Gale SSC Coordinator 

YEAR 10 OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMP Our second Outdoor Education Camp for the year was held in week 7 of Term 3. Students rode bikes on two of the days; in total approximately 50 km each way along the Veloway, Kidman and Heysen trails. The students stayed  at Chookaloo camp ground on both nights and had to  work together taking in a night trail walk and night orienteering. On day two they walked 20 km of the Heysen trail through the Adelaide hills finishing at the summit of Mt Lofty. These students were a great team of individuals who bonded together to make this one of the most successful Year 10 camps yet! Andrew AttwellGill Outdoor Education Teacher 

      

CULTURAL SHOCK I am Songlin Shi, a Chinese social work placement student in the Learner Wellbeing Centre. It is interesting to work at Wirreanda Secondary School. I have been experiencing huge cultural differences since I have come to Australia. When I first came here and studied English in my language institution, my teacher asked me what I felt about cultural differences around us? My answer was “I have not experienced it yet”, because I was surrounded by

Chinese people. However after one year I cannot deny that I am going through the cultural differences that I have never imagined. First of all, I was astonished by student’s school life. When I was in my secondary school, I was in a class with 60 other students. We had more than 20 classes for one grade. I started my day from 7:00am for selflearning, which was like home group activities. Then we had four lessons in the morning and afternoon as well; each class lasts for 45 minutes. We finished our day at almost 10pm, which may be difficult for you to imagine. After the formal lessons and supper, we had 3hour selflearning lessons where we were asked as to finish our homework and some other exercises. Lastly, we went back to our dormitory to sleep. Sometimes, especially when the examdays were getting close, we had to go to school even at weekends. With regards to exams, we had Gaokao exams that I image you know little about. This is an examination that determines whether you can enter a university or not. Most Chinese people regard this exam as a “margin”, which represents the traditional thinking of Chinese parents that if you can acquire a degree from a good university, you can live a good life. However, I suppose the number of parents with this thinking has reduced because lots of students lead a really brilliant life even if they do not attend a university. I am not sure whether it is better nowadays but when I look back to my secondary school it was a kind of “sweet suffering”. On one hand, I had to study almost every day in a week without any recreation activities. On the other hand, I had close relationships with my peers and some of my teachers, which were a kind of motivation that helped me survive my secondary school.  In addition, we also did not have such fabulous wellbeing centre staff members supporting us at that time. Due to the large number of students, it is impossible for staff to take care of every student with proper methods and plans. Basically, once we met some difficulties in our learning and living, most of us figured them out by ourselves or talked to peers instead of parents and teachers.  Therefore, in a manner of speaking, school was “do or die” stuff; either I survive these years with satisfying achievements, or I could be kicked out of this “game”.  What you have here at Wirreanda Secondary School are plenty of fantastic wellbeing staff who support you all the time; you have opportunities to choose what you want to learn; you can choose your own pathways to the future. It is  truly a “daydream” compared to my secondary school.  It has been  interesting during my time at Wirreanda Secondary School to see the differences between the Chinese and Western education systems and the differences between the two cultures. I would be interested in talking to students and families about their experiences with cultural differences.  Songlin Shi  Social Work Student

Open to all primary and secondary school students!  

Wirreanda Secondary School is hosting a short film competition next term inviting all students to get involved. The filming limits students to the use of a small mobile device  such as a phone and cannot exceed 90 seconds in length. It also needs to incorporate the signature theme of “spring”. There will be prizes for different categories and students will be able to access support and resources via the Learning Hub Blog and staff.
