Progress and promise. Those words describe neatly a theme that dominated our most recent fiscal year. All you had to do was look along the eastern third of campus to see signs of exciting progress on the Innovation Campus. The promise that project and many others hold is something our Shocker alumni and friends believe in so strongly they contributed at a record-breaking level to Wichita State University.

In the fiscal year from July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2016, donors gave more than $56 million to the WSU Foundation in outright gifts, planned gifts and pledges, surpassing the previous record of $49 million set just last year.

This report provides the Foundation’s financial outcomes for fiscal 2016 and also highlights some of those gifts and accomplishments of that period.

As the Foundation team spent time with alumni and other donors, it became clear how fervently all of us believe in the future of our university. We have rallied around WSU President John Bardo and his vision for a student-centered, innovation-driven institution.

Among the remarkable gifts committed to that vision in fiscal 2016 were these:

˜ A $1 million planned gift from Jan Henrie ’72 to create the Jan Henrie Women’s Leadership Fund at WSU.

˜ A substantial gift-in-kind from Cybertron International to place its computers in the new Experiential Engineering Building.

˜ A $2 million planned gift from William ’79 and Pamela ’80 Lappin for the W. Frank Barton School of Business.

˜ $1 million from the Dwane and Velma Wallace Charitable Foundation to help revitalize Wallace Hall.

Many others gave generously to a university they love and believe in. Wichita State would not be as strong, as vibrant or as vital without that loyalty and goodwill. Please accept our heartfelt appreciation.

WITH SHOCKER PRIDE,

DEAR SHOCKER SUPPORTERS:

Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust

of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:

˜ To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.

˜ To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.

˜ To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.

˜ To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.

˜ To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.

˜ To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.

˜ To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.

˜ To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.

˜ To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.

˜ To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.

The text of this statement in its entirety was developed by the American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel (AAFRC), Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), and adopted in November 1993.

Right: These images capture some of the flavor of the February 2016 dinner that brought together WSU scholarship recipients and the donors who provided their scholarships.

The Wichita State University Foundation’s investment objective is to achieve, over the long term, an annualized total net return, which meets or exceeds the sum of: 1) the established payout rate to support campus and students’ needs, 2) an administrative fee, which partially funds the Foundation’s operating expenses, and 3) the current rate of inflation to ensure future buying power. The WSU Foundation, through its nine-member Investment Committee, manages for consistent returns with a long-term view requiring careful attention to balancing the risks and rewards inherent in portfolio management. The portfolio is positioned through an asset allocation, which varies depending upon market conditions and seeks growth while managing and diversifying risk. With the assistance of the investment advisor and managers, we are confident in meeting the stated long-term objective. The graphs to the right reflect our return for fiscal year 2016, along with the annualized 5-year and 10-year returns compared to our benchmarks. The pie charts show the current asset allocation for the endowed pooled investments.
