Virtual Reference: New Ask- A- Librarian interface and features

1.  New interface uses “auto suggest” hoping to provide

answer to question before submitting and waiting forresponse

2. You can also call it a knowledge base or FAQs, easy to use

these answers in our in-person work too.

3. Answers in the auto suggest may also be copied by

librarians when answering questions

4. Questions may be transferred to various librarians as well

as to the law library, medical library, and to access services

5. A separate IM feature is in the process of being

implemented

help them choose a topic, find resources including books and articles,

evaluate web sites for quality, and learn about plagiarism.

2. Location www.lib.wayne.edu/research

3. Navigation you can move between the lessons and pages within the

lesson using the navigation bars at the top of the page

4. Contents the lessons contain videos, interactive activities, and check-

Each lesson ends with a quiz. Students can even email the results to

their professor for credit!

them?

research in all different majors and disciplines, from Art to Women’s Studies.

websites, for doing research in a specific subject. They also explain “how to” use and locate these

resources.

3  “How-to” guides There are also many “how-to” guides available on topics such as how to

cite using APA and MLA, Safety and Security, Reference Tools, and EndNote.

4  Course guides Course guides are also available for many courses like ENG 1020, to help

students find the specific resources they need for course assignments.

5  Contact a librarian Guides also contain contact information for the liaison librarian and

many librarians can be emailed directly from the guide page.

Undergraduate Library One Stop Service Desk

1.  One Stop Shop: No more multiple lines!

No more standing in line at one desk just to be told that you need to stand in a

line at another desk.

2.  One desk=multiple services

A single service point where you can have all your questions answered- be it

reserves, reference, etc. –as well as basic check in/checkout services.

3.  Direct Services

The library will increase the number of computers that patrons can use to quickly

search the catalog for media, circulating, or reserve materials.

4.  Personal Service:

With having a single combined desk this will allow Librarians to offer more

personalized service- such going to the stacks to help search for a book or going

to a patrons computer station- without leaving the desk empty for another

patron to wait.

5. The Future!

The library will look at self-checkout systems that could reduce the wait to

checkout material and offer greater personal service for those who need, or

wish, to speak directly to a library person.
