After four years I have come to an end point as the writer of this message. Your next Issue of PN wlll have a message written by your new President. It sometimes seems that I have compressed 20 years Into four, and at other times It seems only yesterday that I began at the Portland Specialty. The Board has accomplished much since then, and I feel that the Club Is moving In the right direction on many fronts.

This Is not to say that all Is shining and wonderful, however. If I've learned nothing else, I've learned that the President. the Board, and the Club Itself can never be all things to all members. Although we have progressed well and accomplished much, disappointments stlll llnger. A case In point Is the new Constitution, which remains unfinished to this day, due to problems with AKC change recommendations.

It Is not my Intention to be negative here, since I think that the positives of the past four years greatly outweigh the negatives. I would like to comment and recognize the Board Members past and present who have served with me, and who have done a great service to the Club. Thanks to Ann Bowley, Maggie Witwer, Carol Zamperini, Pam Barbro, Judy Becker, Pat Coleman, John McNeil. Irma Fertl, Carol Mattingley, Barbara Stetz, Jane Mclane, Dodie Atkins, Nancy McGarvey and Lorraine Walraven. A special thanks to Kathleen Ellls and Nancy Schempp, who served as Parliamentarian and First Vice-President, and Carolyn Nusblckel, our Secretary. Those two positions always seem to be doing some special project for the President. A big thanks to all of you, who did this because you cared, and not because the pay was good.

As a side note to this message, and to bring up some current affairs and problems, It seems that many of you do not thoroughly read PULi NEWS. If you are reading this message, read the rest of the magazine! We have had a large number of calls recently f rom Club Members asking for Information or questioning something which was published In PN. Remember, PN Is your official news and Information source, so read It carefully, especially the Secretary's report.

Good luck to the new administration. I guarantee an experience you wlll remember always. I wouldn't trade It for anything. Thanks to all of you In the Pull Club of America~

II tile delegate S report ii The regular quarterly Delegate's Meeting was held on Tuesday, June 1 , , 1 991 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, New York, NY after a morning Delegate's Forum Meeting that included an open discussion on overpopulation and Responsible Breeding Problems, Breeder Referral - A Positive Note, and the Australian Shepherd Association.

Delegate's Forum: Because of dog overpopulation and irresponsible breeders, many legislatures in this coumry are trying to take away our right to own a dog and the right to breed dogs. Our sport is in serious jeopardy. Some are saying that the AKC should ask the member clubs to set a good example by not breeding dogs for four years. The AKC will be sending out a monthly listing of all local, county, and state municipalities that have anti-breed/ breeding legislation initiated or pending. The AKC estimates the total dog population in the US at 52 million, and pure bred dogs amount to about 22 million. There are about 135,000 people active in dog shows, showing between 600,000 to 900,000 registered dogs.

The AKC has sent a survey to all the Delegates, to the Presidents of AKC member clubs, and to select readers of the AKC GAZETTE asking questions about their feelings regarding over-population and responsible breeding by limiting the number of litters, and increasing fees to better regulate the problem as two examples of the questions asked. Delegate suggestions included: AKC issue cards to member clubs saying they are responsible owners and breeders, owners limit use of stud dogs, owners make greater use of the AKC Limited Registration option, and AKC include literature on neutering and spaying when dogs/litters are registered.

The Board of Directors at the March meeting approved an AKC Breeder Referral program. The program will involve a 900 number and then keying the first several letters of the breed the caller is interested in (PULi). The AKC asks that one person from each club be appointed the "referrer'' if the club does not have a referral program. The 9CX)

number called will not be billed until the caller is told the cost of about $'1.00 per minute (a break-even amount) . The clubs are expected to screen callers and provide a list of names. The intent is to deflect the public from the pet stores to responsible breeders.

A random non-scientific survey was taken by AKC staff calling anonymously to about , 00 referral phone numbers to determine how they were handled. Most were done well with the caller well screened and placed in contact with a breeder who could answer requests.

For rare breeds where there is no referral service, the caller will be referred to the national breed club secretary. There will be a breeder code of ethics. A suggestion wms made to license pet stores by the AKC. There are about 10,500 stores that sell pet supplies, with 58(X) of those stores selling an average of 300 animals per store per year.

The Australian Shepherd Association, a group with some members of the Australian Shepherd Club of America,

. approached the AKC to request registering their dogs with the AKC. The AKC has reviewed their past requirements for breed recognition and is lifting many of the previous requirements to allow this breed to be available for registration as of September 1 , , 991 , and will be able to show in the miscellaneous Class January 1 , 1 992. The Australian Shepherd Club of America is the usual registry for this breed (4,000 members and 60,000 dogs) and is not interested in registering with the AKC. The Australian Shepherd Association is interested in having a dual purpose dog and has been accepted as the parent club by the AKC. This group has 1 20 households and is interested in AKC's 1155 obedience trials, 225 tracking tests, 69 herding events and 1 1 00 all breed shows. The AKC will recognize the pedigrees of the existing registries.

Mr. Kenneth Marden, Chairman of the Welfare and Legislation Committee, announced the Board's approval of a Delegates Advisory Committee and requested that volunteers for such a committee mail their expressions of interest and qualifications to Mr. Maxwell.

The Board approved new Regulations for Lure Coursing Tests and Trials, effective July , , 1991 . The first Lure Coursing events approved by AKC will be held Labor Day Weekend, 1 991 .

Delegate's Meeting: Mr. Louis Auslander, Chairman of the Board, addressed the Delegates and read a letter which has been sent to all delegates, requesting the appointment of a Public Education Coordinator from each club. Mr.

~ d States, and the need for all of us to work together to defend our sport and educate the country on what we do and why we do it Mr. Auslander pledged that the AKC will continue to be an active leader in protecting pure-bred dogs, but reiterated that AKC alone simply can not accomplish all th~ has to be done throughout the country. He also stated that the AKC will begin inspecting all kennels that breed 1 0 or more litters per year, at least once every three years.

Dr. Robert Hritzo, Chairman of the Canine Health Research and Education Committee, provided further details regarding AKC's annual scholarship program, up to an amount of $30,000 per year, which will be awarded to worthy veterinary students.

Mr. Walter Goodman, Chairman of the Show Operations Committee, reported that he had received the report of the Delegates Advisory Committee on Show Site Safety and thanked them for their efforts and hard work. Details of the report will be forthcoming at the September meeting after the Board has reviewed them.

Mr. Robert Maxwell introduced Dr. James Edwards who has been appointed, effective June , st of this year, as Director of Judging Research and Development, and Mr. Wayne Cavanaugh who joined AKC on April , , , 99'1 as Director of Communications.

There were no votes taken as the proposed new Dog Show Rule amendments regarding the Bred-By-Exhibitor Class, dog disqualifications, Retriever Trial rules were not read in actual text at the March meeting, so those changes will be voted on in September.

In addition, the following will be voted on in September:

Liz Higgins read proposed changes to the AKC By-Laws conceming the President and AKC Board Members. The change requires that the President only needs to be a Delegate, lifting the requirement as present that the President also be a member of the Board of Directors (elected by the Delegate Body). This amendment is aimed at having Bob Maxwell, the Executive VP and CEO, becoming President at the next Delegates meeting. If passed, the Delegates will have relinquished another voting privilege. It is expected that an amendment to the proposal

6 PULI NEWS/August, 1991

will provide for Delegate President

catio for the position of

John Ronald, Samoyed Club of Amenca, proposed that the By-Laws be changed so that only the ational Breed Club can change the Breed Standard.

Robert Kelly, Land O' Lakes KC, reread his proposal which was tumed down by the board, limiting to two terms the time a Board member can serve, adding a proviso that all present Board members would be considered as serving their first term.

Jay Phinizy proposed that the AKC publish the guidelines for existing fines and suspensions for registration fraud, and that an oversight committee of Delegates be established by the Delegate body to review the operations and procedure of the AKC's Investigation Department The committee would make recommendations to the Board and the Delegates on a standardization of fines and suspensions of registration fraud and irregularities by June, 1 992. The chair ruled the proposal out of order and interfering with the duties of the Board of Directors.

Pat Laurins asked that Delegate Judges, who cannot accept a fee for judging, be allowed to designate a donation to an approved canine charity and that a list of charities be published. Meeting adjoumed.

For those of you th8t eubecribe to the AKC GAZETTE, the Board also approved at the May Board meeting, the acceptance of the revised and rewritten Regulations for Herding Teats and Trials. The new regulations are more difficult and I would welcome input from thoee of you involved in herding.

I spoke to James Crowley at the June meeting about the point systems for Pulik, published this past April. The region #3 including Kentucky and Tennessee are badly in error, requiring 22 dogs for a 5 ptmajor and 25 bitches for a 5 pt major. Other regions are requiring very stiff numbers of entries as well and I doubt many Putik will finish championships this year. Mr. Crowley said he would investigate and get back to me. He also said that any increases in entries required per points, is averaged over three years period of time and that we should not expect the point system to drop again the first year following a decrease in the number of entries shown

HIGHLIGHTS FROM

THEPAST

By Peg Stiff. PCA Historian

We've got such good puli drawings and sketches that we should gather them together and make a notebook of them. May I ask you readers to send me Puli drawings of all kinds, examples of notepaper and stationery, logos of the Specialties, of Puli Clubs, etc., I'll put them together and bring them to the Specialty.

Back to the highlights from PULJ NEWS starting with the 6/73 issue. This features John Lafore, President of the AKC. Interestingly enough, from our 1 991 viewpoint of trying to get rid of puppy mills, the AKC is order [sic) to impact ''the mass production and sale of low quality puppies" "that worries us dog fanciers so much" tells of its plans to hire "resident agents" to be located in the "largest puppy production centers" ... "in order to insure proper record keeping and identification of dogs." That was their plan to handle this deplorable puppy mill situation in 1 973 and the first man had already been hired to work in Iowa The balance covered milder items like rule changes and research sponsored by the AKC. He did com·ment, however, about the "growing evidence that rabies is not necessarily fatal."

The AKC also sponsored a day-long event which amounted to a job description of itself, entitled "A Day at the AKC." It took place in Califomia and featured talks by the executives and department heads. Widely attended and very interesting, rt was written up

in the PN of 4-74 by Loma Spangenberg and eamed her an award from the Dog Writers Association of America

Whatever happened to theee two ideas? A parchment award for valorous deeds performed by Pulik as designed by Dr. George Moore and the book of the Second 200 Puli Champions.

The 4-74 issue was really remarkable. It also published the AKC Puli Standards for 1 936 and 1 960 and the Hungarian Standard which was in effect in 1 936 and the Standard printed in the MEOE Book of 1 966. The centimeters are converted into feet and inches for us.

This issue also included Pat Coleman's story of how hard we worked here in

publication. Among her many innovations were the extensive use of photos and the calling of a wider variety of canine issues to the members' attention.

I cannot let these mid-70's go by without mentioning a most remarkable obedience dog, Kislo's Hajra Furge Bandita, UD., "Bandit" for short (He was] owned by Gilbert Pearson, who handled him, and Mrs. Wilhelmina Ferrando. Dee Rummel remarked in 12-74 that he ''works with a joie de vivre that brings out the goose bumps in the most blase observer." That year he was the #1 Working Dog in Obedience and #8 All Breed Obedience Dog. In 1975 he was entered 38 times and attained HrT in 1 4 of them. That year he was #8 ranking All Breed Obedience Dog. He had a

Connecticut to persuade the Legislature to pass a bill prohibiting the importation and exportation of puppies less than 8 weeks of age. Duncan Wright of ADOA helped rewrite the bill at a crucial moment Your historian, as president of Farmington Valley KC, played a role in organizing and contacting people, sending telegrams and alerting our club's call committee. We were up against the pet shops all the way. However, the measure passed and constitutes an important protection for puppies.

There was a notice in the 12-74 issue of the re·signation as Editor of Loma Spangenberg. Under her five year Melage, PN grew to be a first rate

phenomenal 30 HIT's in his career.

The really big celebration in 1 976 was out 25th Anniversary Specialty weekend. I'm going to quote from the 1 0-76 account Many of us present members took part; rt was only 15 years ago!

''The Puli Club of America celebrated its 25th anniversary over the Labor Day weekend at Westchester County, New York and what a celebration it wasl the festivities began on Friday evening with a beach party at the home of Jack and Roberta Taylor on Wallack's Point, Stamford, Ct, hosted by the Taylors and the Pilgrim Puli Club of New England. The setting was a beautiful one and the weather ideal. The food was delicious and the ocean

breeze helped to sharpen the appetites. Preceding the beach party on Friday was an entry of 34 Pulik at the Tuxedo Park KC Show, the first of four weekend shows in Tarrytown. Judge Winifred Heckman awarded BOB to CH. Kallopusztai Aper, owned by Helen Majer and Vilma Maj ores ... "the headquarters of the PCA was at the Tarrytown Hitton Hotel" .. . (at the) Somerset Hills KC Show .. . 34 Pulik entered under j. Joe Mellor who awarded BOB to CH. Kallopusztai Aper. After the show, everyone hurried back to the Hilton to get ready for the banquet and annual meeting. ''The committee in charge of the event did a fantastic job of arranging a setting tor the banquet, L;lnique to any of the past. Cocktails and dinner was served poolside with gala decorations and favors commemorating 25 yearsl Ladies, beautifully attired, accompanied by handsome gentlemen mingled around during cocktails enjoying Puli talk and admiring the enviable door prizes ... "

''The crowd adjourned to an indoor meeting room to hear the speaker of

the evening and attend the annual meeting. At the back of the roorn, pictures were on display ot all Best of Breed winners from PCA Specialties from 1955 through the 1 976 spring snow. Five of the winners nave been Best in Show Pulis."

'Sunday (Specialty Day) ... a beautiful day unfolded. First event was the PCA Puppy sweepstakes with an entry of 24, judged by Mrs. Rachael Page Elliot. .. ''following the sweepstakes judging, Mr. Larry Downey judged the regular Specialty Classes. There were 62 dogs entered. ----st a I · e update from the Rescue Committee. All the adopted Pulis are doing great! I try to keep tabs on eac one and act as a resource person and grooming advisor and each is doing wonderfully.

"Molly," the one that was from a llama ranch in Colorado and whose coat was "natural" looks gorgeous. Wrth a minimum of grooming, her coat is very good. I saw her recently and wished · I could take her in the ring as a Special. Of course, she has no papers. She and her owner are very happy. The best part of this job 1s to see the oogs blossom after they get a good home.

You all saw "Jessie" at the Pennsylvania specialty. Carol Zamperini worked very ard with im and he's an absolute delight now.

"Henri Lee," who was groo ed suspiciously like a poodle, now is corded and loo~ wo derful. He's so happy with his new home, he posrtivety giows.

I'm getting a lot of letters and phone calls from people wanting rescue dogs and/o o der Pulik and for information about Pulik. I've accum·,.r.Hlro•d some literature and a breeders list to send where a.opropnate.

There wm. a Puli in an an s elter in Peoria, lllinios. Someone came to a dog s ow, looked up Dee Rummel and told her of the dog. S e was leaving town for a few days, so another couple, Puli o ers, rescued the dog and have now adopted him!

Recently it came to our attention that two male ;: _ ::, _ =- s were in a pet shop in Houston. Wrth much help fro :- ~

breed rescue people on how to deal with this, I asked tr-a F ertl to help. She went and talked with the owner and handled it very well. The puppies are in good shape, well socialized, clean and well fed. She left her calling card and if they are sold, the owner will suggest they contact her for help on grooming. If they are not sold, we expect to hear from him. The breeder is known to several PCA members (he's from Mexico). Hopefully this won't happen again. Obviously, we can't buy the dogs at full price. The breeder would just keep breeding and selling to this pet shop. Irma Fertl and Wanda Huff are keeping in contact with the pet shop for what we hope will be a happy ending.

Another rescue seminar will be held July 27 in Denver. The contacts I made at the first one were invaluable. Everyone shares information on how to deal with rescues and our PCA members have been wonderful. Everyone I've asked for help has come through. Thanks to you all. 8 y Betty Oshlm1e1er, Co/11/7'11ttee C/Ju

#1 CH. MOONSHADOW PUTTIN ON THE RITZ c12.214 po :s>

In 1 990 "Daz" earned 4 all breed Best 1n Shows, 1 Specialty Best in Show and 36 Group l's to finish 1 990 as the #1 Puli, #6 Herding Dog and #65 all breeds. This was no simple feat by any means for him, since his main goal in life is, and always has been, to be a couch potato. Anyone who really knows him, knows that it takes an act of God to get him to exert himself beyond the limits he deems necessary to the situation, and for Daz these limits are usually pretty restricted to what pleases him. His accomplishments in 1 990 are a great tribute to the patience of his handler; and a testimony to the great bonds of affections that developed between them. Her name means "fiery little Hungarian,· and that she certainly is; on the Massachusetts Tumpike she's known as the Terror of the Toll Booths I Minnie began her career as a Special shortly after whelping four puppies, and quickly won two Bests in Show along with 59 group placements. At the age of five years old, this is "Ferdie's" third consecutive year in the top ten Puli rankings. An all breed Best in Show winner in the past, Ferdie has been a consistent BOB winner in specials competition with the other top Eastern Pulik when they have met head to head. Wrth his breeder/co-owner/handler, and shown on a limited basis compared to the heavy campaigning of other Pulik, Ferdie has won for 1990, 51 BOB's, 11 Group l's and 35 other group placements. He won BOB at the Puli Club of America's supported entry and was a semi-finalist at the PCA Specialty. Ferdie is a nephew to CH. Wallbanger Kermit J. Bounce. Res£tme submitted by Ann Bowley

This is "Noah," p icture a ,n his 1 990 Kai-Kan Pedigree portrait In 1 990, he once again defeated more Pulik at the Best of Breed level than any other Puli. Now retired, and much to his dislike, he must rest upon his laurels that include the Best of Breed at the 1 989 National, twice Best of Breed at the Puli Club of Northern California [Specialties] 1987 and 1989, twice Best of Breed at the Puli Club of Southern California [specialties] 1 988 and 1 990, four all breed Best in Shows and three Awards of Merit at

#6 CH. PEBBLETREE'S A. ARANJOS (1578 pts)

Pebbletree has had at least one of its Pulis in the Top Ten every year since 1974, and although shown in a very limited way, "Aran" not only upheld that tradition, but moved up from #8 in 1 989 to #6 this year. He placed in Group nearly 50% of the times shown, always owner-handled. Beyond that, he is one of the best ambassadors for the breed. .. content to lie on his table for hours and let young and old touch his cords, question his vision, wonder how we comb him and express amazement that he is bathed every week. All leave with a good impression of the Puli breed, as displaced by this affable "ham."

'Bogie" very nearly died during the 1 990 Specialty from what is still a mystery to his owners. His appearance in the Top Ten rankings for nearly the third year in a row (he was #11 in 1 988) says more about this dog's quality, heart and resiliency than any glowing phrases. Bogie lost ring time to his illness and recovery, but he did mend. His fourth Group I was won with his owner/handler shortly after his reappearance 1n the show ring. Watching his progress from near death to competing in Best in Show months later cemented in our minds that what a dog does in the group ring usually

as to do with quality - but how he does 1t has to do with heart For all his Graue placements, Awards of Merit, honors and rankings, Bogie is first and always, friend and companion. Resvme .svbmltted by S Enil<o Szeremy.

#9 CH. WALLBANGER VODKA 0 CKS (934PTS)

Banger made his return to the show ring 1n the fall of 1 989 after patiently waiting for mom to finish work on her teaching certificate. That he is making his second appearance in the top ten with limited showing and owner handlers is truly a credit to the dog and his breeder. He is a sweet, loving dog who asks no questions and gives of himself completely. He is a joy as a companion and a friend. During 1 990 Banger had the privilege of completing the requirements for a Canadian Championship and two group placements with his "buddy'' Patty Anspach. Banger also made his stage debut in a local production of "Camelot'' where he stole his scenes with a comic portrayal of "Horrid - the dog." Banger is currently training for his CDX -his next goal is a top ten obedience ranking. Resvme svbmttted by OoaJe At/(lns.

"Lulu" - her name says it all. Only shown eleven times in 1 990, she had ten placements. Lulu earned her UD in four trials this spring. She will spring into agility and gait into the conformation ring later this fall. A fourth generation UD, we believe her to be the first to boast of four generations of utility titlists. ''Wishes" has done very well in Novice. He finished his CD with two firsts, four seconds and a third, all with very good scores and tough competition. He finished his herding HT at the Herding test in Pennsylvania last year. We have one leg in Open and hope to get his COX in short order. He is very different from most Pulik I've trained : very intense, very serious when he is working but loving every minute of it He is really a fun dog to show and an easy dog to live with. "Ozzie" is only locally shown. His show career is slowly coming to a halt He is eight years and doesn't seem to be able to put utility all together. So he is to be shown only in Open B. #5 CH. WEATHERBY'S WHIRLWIND, CDX (64 pts)

"Rudi" is such an affectionate and outgoing little Puli. She makes friends everywhere she goes and is a real crowd pleaser in both the obedience ring and the herding arena She's so much fun to work with, I can't really call rt work, even Utility, which is what she's training me for these days. There's nothing like the bond that develops between a dog and its owner during obedience training (you also develop muscles from lugging jumps to every park in town.) I highly recommend rtl Herding training has been great fun also, except for a brief time spent on crutches when the killer sheep from hell got me. On July 6, Rudi earned her first leg toward her HT, and she plans to pursue her herding career more seriously after earning her UD Trtle this fall. Rest//l7e svbnvth1d by Linda Hall

#6 CH. PRYDAIN NEVETOS, CDX (47 pts)

"Nevy" eamed a Dog World in Novice and her CDX in 3 trials with 3 first places. Shown only the first quarter of 1990, she surprised me with this ranking. Nevy is far more than a breed champion or obedience dog. She's part of the library programs I present throughout the school year and a major "actor" .... complete with antlers - in the Christmas story presentations we do at elementary and preschools. She is also a wonderful therapy dog, always finding just the lap that needs a bundle of cheery black cords. Her biggest triumph came last summer when she connected with a schizophrenic child at the adolescent psychiatric unit of the state hospital. Rest1me st1bmli'll9d by Jvo_y C40no.

"Ditto" the 'Wonderdogl" At the ripe age of , 1 1 /2, Ditto was entered at the , 990 PCA Specialty in the Veteran's Class. Little did anyone suspect that he would be able to score a 1 96 - and that was without any obedience training for years. At the urging of many who saw him at the Specialty, he was entered for the first leg of his CDX last fall. Amazingly, he took third place in Open A The steward thought that his birthdate as listed in the catalog was a misprint -the correct date must have been 1 987, not 1 978. Ditto has his father's marvelous outgoing personality and the wonderful ability to make all who see him, smile. Hopefully, he will complete his CDX by the end of , 991 , at the age of 1 31 Ditto truly is a "wonderdogl" R11sW1111 svbmnted by Caro~ M.ts.b.hke/.

Our grooming question this issue addresses the white corded coat. "Experts" have been asked to serve as our guest panelists. They are Nancy Hand Uebes, Larry Hart and Barbe Pess1na.

A Komondor owner since 1 972, Nancy Hand Uebes is the breeder/owner/handler of the top Best In Show Komondor to date, and top-winning bitch, CH. Nagyalma Apple of My Eye, CD. "Pooh," as she is known, has garnered 7 All Breed Bests in Show as well as 3 National Specialties, her last from the Veterans Class in 1987. (For those of you who knew her, Pooh is still alive, though very arthritic, and still trying to bite the UPS man.) Nancy has owned two other Specialty winners, one also home-bred, and has bred three National Specialty Sweepstakes winners. Under the kennel name "Nagyalma" she has bred 1 6 Komondor champions, 5 CD's, and has acquired more than 1 00 group placements on Komondors over the years. She also is the proud owner of [the Puli] CH. Wallbanger Goforit Gonzo, who finished his show career wrth 64 group placements, 1 1 of them Group l's. Nancy is an. AKC judge of 5 Working breeds and 3 Hound breeds.

Larry Hart is co-owner of CH. Chazar, CD, HC. With his co owner/handler, Earl Gebhardt, Chazar has multiple group placements and is the only white Puli ever to win Best Sr. Puppy in Sweepstakes and go on to be Best of Winners at a National Specialty.

Barbe Pessina, Chairman of the Judges Education Committee and owner of the #1 Puli for 1 990, CH. Moonshadow's Puttin on the Ritz. is also owner of white Puli, Moonshadows Arctic Express, winner of the 1 2 - 1 8 month class at the 1 990 Specialty.

Please advise me on the care, concerns, and challenges of a white corded coat from puppyhood on.

NHL: When people ask me, "How do you get your dogs so clean?", my stock answer is, "Never let them get dirty." Glib as that may sound, it's the first step in keeping a successful white corded coat. From puppyhood on, the best advice I can give you is to keep your dog as clean as possible. Now that doesn't mean you should keep him in a padded cell, on racks, or never let him see dirt, grass or daylight, but it does mean that when he goes out and makes mudpies, you have a responsibility to rinse him off (at least) before the dirt dries on the coat and stains it.

There are two kinds of dirt we deal with in a white corded coat: actual pieces of dirt or plant products, and the staining left behind by mud, urine or saliva Staining can happen any time. The soft, fuzzy puppy coat can stain as easily as a cord. Actual dirt is mostly a problem in the corded coat, as the cords hoid the dirt like a sponge holds

water. In both cases there are ways to preverrt the discoloration by means of prevention, and there are also ways to remove the stains or dirt

The most important thing to remember is that while your puppy is cording, that is when the curls are beginning to mat and tighten, you should take special care to keep the coat meticulously clean. Every leaf bit and grain of sand which gets caught in a cord at that time will stay in the cord forever, and the more garbage which gets trapped in the coat, the darker the cord will look when fully formed. As it is, cords cast shadows and do not look as white as, say a brushed Samoyed coat, so the cleaner the cord, both inside and out, the better the adult coat will look.

Should you get sand or dirt in the cords, the best way to remove it is with a good spray of water. The better the water pressure, the more success you will have in removing the dirt Rinsing is a cords best friend. Also remember that soap can leave a sticky film which attracts dirt, so a good rinse will not only remove the dirt itself, but also the ability of the cord to attract more. I actually have a garden hose spray at my dog tub so I can "power'' the dirt out of cords. Just be careful not to frighten the dog by "powering" him out of the tubl I hold the cords in my left hand and direct the spray onto my hand instead of the dog.

Just because you have kept the dog immaculately clean doesn't guarantee that you still won't have residual stains -especially on the feet and legs, face and rear cords. My favorite shampooing products in the past have been Amway's LOC - High Suds (so you can tell when the coat is rinsed) with a laundry phosphorous whitner added. Unfortunately the phosphorous additives 0.e., Miracle White) are illegal in some states and might not be available. Of course, I would never suggest that when you are traveling you could buy a few and take them home ... Although LOC is not marketed as o dog shampoo, it is completely safe, even on the skin, and is gentle on the coat I have also found that Mycodex Flea Shampoo with Carbary! is good on a white coat, as is Oster White Coat shampoo, and Mr. Groom Whitner Shampoo. Be careful

with flea dips as many will discolor the coat, but the actual reaction depends greatly on your local water supply and how it reacts with the products you are using.

I never, under any circumstances, use laundry bluing on my dogs. I have found that in the past the bluing gets into the cords tuming them slightly grey. I can always tell a dog in the ring which has been "blued" as it looks greyish white to me. The correct color cast or. a white corded coat should be creamy, not grey.

For really stubbom stains l resort to cream peroxide, which can be purchased in different strengths at beauty supply houses. I pour it directly on the dry cords, keeping it away from the skin, wait 20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo as normal. This works well on the urine stains and dingy legs and feet The warning here is that this works well when not used too often. If you bleach a coat too much or with products too strong (like chlorine), you can damage the hairs themsetves which will make them tum yellowish. Remember that on the adult cord, much of the hair is dead and already shed out which itself can look less than white. Add damage to those hairs and the resulting discolored coat can look as bad as a stained one. Also remember that sunlight can damage even a white coat Just as it tums black costs red, it can turn white coats yellow, especially costs which have been bleached. I have also heard about a product on the market called Fresh Fur Gel which l have purchased but have not yet used. I understand that it works well on food-stained mouths.

The best preventative available can only happen after the cords have grown long enough to tie up. I firmly believe in tying cords up, both black and white, to prevent urine staining and facial staining. I use plain old rubberbands and have never had any breakage problem on my white costs. Fabric coated elastics work well on b!ack costs, but the tiny metal piece which hold them together rusts and leaves stains on the white coats, so you cannot use them. The stretchy ponytail ties are cute but don't hold well enough for the smaller cord bunches, like on the face. Experiment with different drug store ties, but be careful to check for metal parts which will rust and cause orange spots on your white cords.

If all of this sound compulsive, well it isl In order to keep a successful white corded coat you need dihgence, patience, stick-to-it-tiveness and sheer determination. I have been seen with my dogs up on a table at shows, picking seemingly microscopic particles out of cords with tweezers while waiting for groups to begin. But for all my advice, each coat is different and each living situation creates new challenges.

LH: The dee so to rase and show a white Puli is a big one · not o oo ave the white coat to groom and KEEP WHITE, but o a.so become a rarity in the show ring. You s o Id e ore co sider these things seriously before making

To begin wrth yo 're try g to pick the best prospect out of a litter of wh e p p es o ave a snow white puppy with no biscurt co1or b she s not as good as the puppy with a little color o e ears and hocks. And then there's the cream colored puppy and he's the best in the litter. These factors play a ma,or part 1n which one you'll decide to raise and show Since our standard does not discem the various shades of white, you go with your gut feeling, as well as your knowledge of Pulis and decide to raise the cream colored puppy for the show ring.

The early grooming is the same as grooming a black or grey Puli, and it seems like the cream color is fading, or tuming whiter. Buy you're pleased with the development and realize your decision to show this puppy is a good one.

By the time he's 6 months old, you have him trained in ring deportment and he's ready for his first real show. He is used to baths and regular brushing to keep his coat as white as possible. His master shampoos him with an aloe bluing shampoo made by Nature's Choice. After rinsing out as much as possible of the shampoo, he's rinsed with baking soda His coat is then covered with an aloe re-moisturizer, also made by Nature's Choice. His short 6 month coat is easily rinsed out. towel dried and left to finish drying naturally.

Before ring time, his coat is brushed out and misted with water so it won't fly around so much. During the next few months, he's kept brushed until he's about one year old when the brushing stops, except to keep the ends from curling back. His coat is allowed to mat, until it is split into cords. It is then just a matter of letting it grow and keeping it clean. He has the run of the house and his back yard is all grass, so he stays pretty clean on his own. Monthly and pre-show baths are a necessity however, as well as the grooming which is necessary for all Pulis, regardless of color.

As his coat gets longer, it is necessary to keep the cords tied up on his sides, since he'll chew off any cords with urine on them. (Under the lights in a show ring, any unne or dirt realty shows) . He is kept tied up to be exercised until the very last minute before ring time. After his coat is let down, you must be careful that he doesn't urinate. (Naturally, this only applies to males) . His coat is then misted with enough water to straighten out his cords. He's always carried to the ring since any dirt that the ends of his cords pick up will show in the ring. After he's finished in the

Page 37: Wtncheater, KY 40391 › pulinews › PN39-4-1991Aug.pdf · lat. VP 2nd VP Secret.arr Treaaurer Board of Directors Parll. Natulu John Telbba 3223 Baaln Spring• Qd. Wtncheater, KY

ring, his coat is immediately tied up, and of course, the tips of his cords are dirty. tt's usually ok to just leave them until his next bath.

During this white Puli's show career, he's encountered judges that asked if white was allowed in the standard, as well as statements such as "I didn't know they came in white." (This statement has been heard from spectators as well as judges.) Many judges have stated that this was the first white Puli they'd ever seen and several inquired how we kept him so white.

But he's loved it all, in spite of all the baths and other ordeals to maintain his rare beauty. He's met lots of people who had a multitude of reactions to seeing a ''white Puli." And maybe he's educated a few people about Pulis.

BP:The first portion of Barbe's response is taken from a letter which accompanied her answer to the grooming question.

'When Kimo was whelped I was subject to the same prejudices that I think many Puli people are. I always fett that if a white Puli wasn't PURE WHITE then it was somehow inferior; or perhaps a fako, or who knows what I certainty never entertained the idea of owning a white Puli (heaven forbid) and always considered them somehow inferior to the blacks. I think Sue Maass' article that appeared in the AKC GAZETTE best describes these prejudices wherein she states "Dead undercoat (within the cords) will tum from white to off-white, but our standard does not allow for this ... " I believed this concept as well as the next person ..

Needless to say Kimo has been an educational process and I do think perhaps the breed as a whole needs this education. Reading the standards (AKC) as printed in PUU NEWS [see June, , 991 issue) for , 936, , 960 and , 983 I find no reference in more than 50 years wherein the word "PURE" was applied to the white Puli. One can only assume then that this need for "pure" is a subjective interpretation by vanous breeders. In fact, if you read the various standards that apply to white dogs you will find only the Maltese makes mention of the word "pure."

All of this bespeaks a lack of knowledge on our part as Puli breeders of the genetics of coat color (fodder for another article or series of articles) . Think of what we ask in the white Puli - that he be white, that he has black pigment Now pull out Little's book on the INHERITANCE OF COAT COLOR IN DOGS. I am as guitty as the next person in sharing these misconceptions on color, but I think perhaps it is time we joined the 20th century.

In the Breeder's Column in the last PN Art Sorkin made mention of tne Fako and it& acceptance in Hungary. I can

well remember the arguments that took place when the standard was being revised the last time ; and I also remember statements being made that this was a new color and just a trend. Allow me to quote from the book HUNGARIAN DOG BREEDS published in Hungary and written by Pal Sarkany and lmre Ocsag. This book was first published in , 977 and revised in 1 986.

'Color of Hair. We have already mentioned that the Puli originally was a breed of many colors. The story of the Puli's colour can be closely followed from earliest entries in the pedigree registration books.

When scientists and experts in breeding began to take an interest in Pulis at the beginning of the , 920's, the following colours were found : white, cream coloured, dove-grey, silver grey, olive grey, pale yellow, blue grey, slate, iron grey, steel blue, faded black, rusty black, black with intermixture of white, and sometimes even jet black. To breed exclusively black, was a trend which began only thirty years ago. Black, being a dominant colour, spread very easily. Black Pulis were favoured in breeding, it their black colour was homozygous even when mated to heterozygous Pulis, always giving black puppies in the first generation.

This explains the great speed with which black colour spread. Although later generations threw back to other colours, these were not used for breeding, because the breeders acted under the influence of the current fashion, and were ashamed to have puppies of other colours than black.

Due to this misguided policy, colour variations were rarely found by , 950. The standard description of , 960 describes the ideal colour as black.

This flow of black colour - which is an example of breeding based on wrong principles - was interrupted by the appearance of white Pulis in the early , 960s. Grey was more readily accepted by official opinion, as the black hair of most Pulis fades into grey as years go by.

A revision of the standard description in , 966 says: "Pulis are of different colours. Black, several shades of grey and white are bred at present" From then on puppies of whole colours were left alive, no matter what the colour was."

I know that Cheryl Prokopowich has some definite ideas on color and knows her genetics as well. Perhaps some educational articles on the genetics of coat color might serve this breed and this club well at this time."

Grooming the white Puli encompasses the same tasks and functions of grooming any other Puli. The job becomes more formidable and far more challenging however when faced with the task of keeping the white Puli clean to begin

PULI NEWS/August, 1991 37

Page 38: Wtncheater, KY 40391 › pulinews › PN39-4-1991Aug.pdf · lat. VP 2nd VP Secret.arr Treaaurer Board of Directors Parll. Natulu John Telbba 3223 Baaln Spring• Qd. Wtncheater, KY

wrth. Unlike the Komondor, the Puli is lower to the ground and therefore the underbelly and the legs are 1n closer contact wrth the very elements we try to protect them from ; i. e., organic stains and dirt.

I will assume that most people reading this already know the fundamentals of basic corded coat care. One does the same things to the white coat to cord it as they do to the black or grey coats. One generally assumes that after spending a significant amount of time bathing, rinsing and conditioning the corded coat that if it feels clean and smells clean - it is clean. Surpnse folks - not necessarily sol This doesn't hold true for the white Puli ... you spend all this time with the dog n the tub and washing, washing, washing and when you finally take the dog out expecting it to be clean you realize that while it feels clean, looks clean .. . the cords are still yellow from organic stain -- or in real terms -- urine. In order to get the white Puli as clean as possible, one has to make every attempt to keep the dog as clean as possible between baths. Every one you talk to that has had to deeJ with the white corded coat has a different solution or method of grooming. I've devised my own system through trial and error.

My dogs are all kept 1n indoor/outdoor covered runs during the day. The outdoor surface of the runs are gravel and we found out very early in the game with this dog that gravel just doesn't cut it wrtr a white dog. We placed 2x2 squares of flagstone sloping toward the center (for fast drainage) over the gravel surface. This allowed any urine to drain quickly and for the most part worked really well until the dog hit the 2 year stage in length of coat At this stage because of the length on the coat I started having a more difficult time with organic stains on the ends of the cords on the underbelly and insides of the legs.

The next step: After a lot of thought I decided to try a type of stall matting on top of the flagstone. This is a form of heavy rubber matting that is molded into a tight lattice pattern. This allows the oog good traction for his feet; but sits about 3/4" above the flagstone which means that there 1s even less splash back than when on the flagstone. This helps to cut down on the organic stains to some degree. The runs are washed daily and all of this helps when bath time comes, which is always once a week no matter what!

Bathing the white corded Puli is a time consuming task if ever there was on·e. About 3 hours before tub time I make a paste consisting of Ivory Snow powder; Borax and a whitening agent that is made by Crown Royale. I add a small amount of conditioner to this paste to form the consistency at pancake batter. This 1s brushed on the ends of each cord and left to dry fc:- about 2-3 hours. Nails, ears and teeth are taken care of and checked during this time and any eye stains the dog may have are also tackled. The

38 PULI NEWS/August, 1991

dog is allowed to srt in a crate biding his time.

The aog 1s then placeo in a tub and the above described paste is nnseo thoroughly from the coat It is at this stage that the real bathing process begins. The tub 1s filled with several inches of water to which shampoo (any) is added. -:-he water 1s then sponged througn the coat thoroughly. Unlike black dogs, at this stage I actually apply shampoo (generally a shampoo made especially for white coats) to handfuls of cords at this time and work it well through the coat over the entire body. The tub is drained and I work a second application of shampoo directly into the feet, legs and underbelly of the dog at this time. Special attention is also paid to the eye area and the muzzle to make sure any :itains or feed residue are thoroughly removed. I then rinse, nnse, rinse until I am sure all shampoo has been completely removed from the coat and skin. If there are no shows that weekend (and I might add that the white dog is always the iast to be washed and as late as possible the night before the show) a very heavy conditioner 1s applied. (Note : The heavier the conditioner, the easier it 1s to get the dog clean, since dirt is more likely to adhere to the conditioner and not get trapped in the cords).

I can't say that I have pet manufacturer's products that I use since I generally try different products and expenment to see what gives me the best results.

If there are no shows scheduled I generally coat the area under the eye with vaseline as this helps to keep eye stains from forming, and the hair on the muzzle is kept brushed for easier cleaning (the cords on the head cover this anyway.)

If we have a show coming up, the same steps are followed but the heavy conditioner is eliminated. It is virtually impossible to keep a white Puli as clean as when he first comes out from under the dryer when going to a show, so the problem of presenting them as well as possible takes on added dimensions. I do have "Beardie Booties" that I use and the dog is placed on a synthetic carpet in the x-pen to prevent his feet from getting soiled. I also have a specially made crate that has ionized bars all around (the aluminum from normal crates rubs off on the white dog and leaves them dingy looking) and a raised grill to lie on. All of this helps to keep the white dog clean but there is always the ever present "organic" stain.

About 2 hours before ring time, the ends of the cords that have become soiled are sprayed wrth "Summer's Eve feminine wash." This 1s a slightly oily liquid preparation. The ends of the cords are immediately powdered wrth cornstarch and the dog is then placed in his crate to dry. (Because the spray 1s oily the cornstarch will stick.) About ~ 5 minutes before ring t ime, the dog is allowed to shake and I run my hands through the coat to remove any left

Page 39: Wtncheater, KY 40391 › pulinews › PN39-4-1991Aug.pdf · lat. VP 2nd VP Secret.arr Treaaurer Board of Directors Parll. Natulu John Telbba 3223 Baaln Spring• Qd. Wtncheater, KY

over cornstarch that hasn't already fallen off. This will usually remove any soiled areas with the cornstarch. Important note: If you do this you must be sure to remove all cornstarch from the coat before entering the ring - this is just a technique to help remove the stains - not make the dog white if he wasn't to begin with.

Lastly, whenever traveling to dog shows be sure to take your dryer with you - after all of the above, the white Puli usually only stays really white for about 24 hours - I think in their hearts they really want to be black.*--

How do the Pulik seen in the ring today compare to the standard?

suggestions regarding those areas?

TEACH, TEACH the Novices (not easy.) The best are excellent but many beginning entries are almost lamentable.

What strengths and/or weaknesses are predominant in the Pulik you have judged recently? Can you offer suggestions to breeder-a/exhibitors for improving problem areaa?

Do you enjoy receiving breed/all breed publications or are you overwhelmed with them and scarcely read them?

Yes, I am interested but do not reao each one from cover to cover.

Gooo coats ano strong musculature get instant recognition from me.

Do you have a preference regarding a corded or a brushed coat?

What changes, good or bad, have you noted in the breed over the last five years?

Personally I prefer the coroeo coat but will always put uo a combed out coated dog rt, in my opinion, rt is the better specimen.

More and more are being shown in their natural corded coats (rememoer Mrs. McClennan of Montreal at Westminster?)

Do you have a pet peeve in the show ring?

No reply.

Would you comment on the overall temperament and ring behavior of the Pulik currentty being shown?

Would you gi,re us a brief resume of yourself?

46 PULI NEWS/August, 1991

When added to a nutritionally balanced and compiete dog food, many supplements provide vitamins and minerals already ava1iable 1n the diet in required amounts. The result can be a toxic overloaa1ng of a dog's system and corresponding hearth problems. Some contain health nsks in and of themselves.

supplements

RAW EGGS: Although an excellent source of protein, raw egg whites can cause a deficiency of the vitamin biotin rf added continually to a diet. Symptoms of bi~tin deficiency include dermatis, hair loss and poor growth.

COD LNER/WHEA T GERM OIL: A good source of vitamins D and E. However, these oils can overload the level of vitamin D in a dog's system and, over a long period, cause soft tissue calcification and skeletal disorders. Excessive oils in a diet can also interfere with the absorption of other nutrients.

SUPPLEMENTAL MINERALS: Calcium, phosphorous and other minerals are used at times to supplement the diet of pregnant and nursing females and growing puppies. They can, however, decrease the absorption of other critical minerals thus upsetting the required balance.

SUPPLEMENTAL VITAMINS : Excessive supplementation of certain vitamins, especially vitamin A, can create toxicity symptoms. too much vitamin A can cause poor growth, abnormal eye conditions and impaired reproductive performance.

MEAT PRODUCTS: Meat by itself is not a complete and balanced diet and should never be used as the sole source of nutrition. It can be used as a supplement to induce food intake to support working dogs under stress and females with large litters who need additional milk production. Canned meat should, however, make up no more than 1 O to 1 5% of the diet

MILK: The normal adult dog may or may not be able to digest and utilize large amounts of milk in its diet If the intestine does not produce enough of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the milk's lactose component, consumption of milk may cause diarrhea.

TABLE SCRAPS: If owners insist on feeding human food to their dogs, table scraps should be limrted to five or ten percent of the diet. The scraps will add calories but ~hould not upset the nutritional balance of a quality commerc1ai food. Avoid poultry, pork chops and other types of bones that can spinter and choke a dog or cause injury to the digestive system.

111 sur-vey r-esults I Try as we did to generate comment, the response to the ·survey tor nearly everyone· was a resounding yawn. Out of over 200 readers of PN, only six noble, and highly regarded individuals _took the trouble to answer. This could mean many things; Puli people don't have opinions, Puli people thought the survey worthless, or Puli people had no time. We thought the most obvious answer was that except tor six copies, all the other surveys spontaneously compusted en route. The results, such as they are, follow.

In the section for non-exhibiting/non breeding owners: of six respondents, 4 bought from a breeder, 2 didn't respond.

"""'One obtained their Puli through the Breeder's Directory, 1 through word of mouth and 4 did not reply.

*-Kfwo had a contract, 4 didn't reply.

*"'Of those who had a contract, 1 was required to neuter their dog, 1 was not. Both ultimately did.

*"There was no response regarding a contractual guarantee against defects.

"""'One Puli encountered health problems, 1 did not and 4 did not reply.

-W-rth the Puli who had health problems, the breeder indicated genuine concem.

"""When asked how the owner decided to obtain a PUli, 4 didn't reply, 1 indicated they had liked what they read in a book, and 1 had owned one before.

*-KT"wo responded in the positive that they had received complete records and directions wrth their puppy.

'l\"ifl'fwo responded that they were screened when inquiring about puchasing a puppy, and 2 responded that they were wamed about coat care and/or negative aspects of the breed.

"I've lost the use of my legs!"

In the section for breeders/exhibitors: Of four who responded: the breeders selected the pulis for 2 of the respondents who bought show quality dogs, 1 picked out his/her own and 1 selected the dog wrth the breeder.

**One had signed a contract, 1 owner was given a contract signea by the breeder, 1 had no contract and 1 had a verbal agreement which was very specific and completely understood.

*"Three replied that their contracts specified the dog to be show quality, 1 did not answer. In all 4 cases, ring experience bore out that the dogs bought as show quality were show quality.

**One responded that if the dog bought as show quality had not been, the owner would've had a choice of no refund/exchange dog or full refund/retum dog.

'k'K'fhree of the repondents were not pressured to co-own the dogs with the breeders, 1 was initially pressured but as the relationship developed, the breeder suggested that her name be removed so the dog could be shown in Novice A obedience.

-ct 4 who answered, 3 felt that they dealt with breeders who provided reliable information and set good examples of ethical behavior.

The following are comments written on the surveys:

"This is our second Puli, both were purchased from (breeders name). When our first became ill, she was a wonderful source of help and information. She doesn't just breed Pulis - she loves them!I"

'I'm in Pulik now for almost 8 years, but still feel somewhat new, even though I've successfully bred 3 litters and shown successfully. If l may still be allowed to answer #25, I would circle 'yes.' (they felt the breeder was ethical and provided good information] . I was most fortunate in hooking up wrth a responsible & ethical breeder right from the start and still look to her often for guidance.•

"After my inquiry, the breeder sent pictures and comments on each dog's personality, etc., then the final decision -mine - lucky me, my "pup' is all I had hoped he would be (so far) . It's nice to know some breeders are willing to place "good" pups with "new inexperienced" exhibitors. It helps keep their interest in showing until they're totally "addicted,• and can't get out!

THE PULI CLUB OF AMERICA Guidelines for Owners/Breeders/Exhibitors

THE PULI CLUB OF AMERICA, Inc., in accordance with the objectives of its Constitution, expects its members to use these Guidelines in establishing a standard of conduct for themselves as owners, breeders, sellers, and exhibitors of Pulik.

A. A Pull owner will provide all dogs within their keeping with:

1. Appropriate food, water, health care and shelter. 2. Emotional requirements of attention, affection and appropriate training.

B. A Puli breeder will:

1. Be familiar with the Standard of our breed. 2. Be aware that the purpose of breeding is to maintain or improve the quality of the

breed in accordance with the Standard . 3. Use all avail able means such as knowledge of ancestors, OFA(Orthopedic Foundation for

Animals) and CERF(Canine Eye Registry), to determine that breeding stock is free of inheritable disease.

4. Obtain radiologically normal OFA evaluation on all breeding stock before breeding. 5. Use only stock which is itself sound in body and temperament. 6. Breed only when in a position to properly care for the bitch and litter, recognizing

that offspring might need housing for a considerable length of time. 7. Not breed a bitch at her first season nor breed her more that 2 ou t of 3 consecutive

heat periods, taking the health of the bitch into consideration at all times. 8. Enter into all breeding arrangements with written contracts. 9. Keep accurate and thorough breeding records in full accordance with AKC requirements.

10. Prevent all breedings that are not carefully planned and provide adequate kenneling to prevent accidental or unplanned matings.

11. Insist that a visiting bitch be in the stud owner's care and/or supervision before, through and until completion of estrus, so that accidental mating to another stud not occur.

12. Not substitute one stud for another without the knowledge and agreement of all parties. 13. Pay careful attention to physical and emotional needs of puppies produced.

C. A person selling a Puli will:

1. Maintain a reasonable price within one's locale, which price should also be compatible with national prices.

2. Intelligently and honestly classify stock as show prospect, breeding prospect or pet. 3. Not sell stock with AKC papers if it may be a potential detriment to the breed.

However, the seller must keep the registration available for future needs, such as obedience. (Withholding AKC registration requires a written agr, eement between seller and buyer.)

4. Ascertain that the prospective owner has the knowledge, ability and facilities to properly care for a Puli.

5. Give the buyer an honest appraisal of coat management, physical, mental and nutritional needs peculiar to the breed.

6. Provide a pedigree of at least 3 generations, typed or written legibly. 7. Supply records to the buyer regarding immunization, feeding and instructions for

future care. 8. Release only puppies which are in good health and guarantee the health of the puppy

for a reasonable length of time. 9. Provide written contractual proof of sale and guarantees. If registration papers

are not yet available, a bill of sale, giving names and registration numbers of sire and dam and date of birth are required.

10. Avoid false and misleading advertising. 11. Not sell or provide stock to pet shops or commercial kennels. 12. Not donate dogs, puppies or adults, for contests, raffles, or fund raising events,

no matter how worthy the cause.

D. A person showing a Puli will:

1. Show and encourage the showing of high quality stock. 2. Exhibit only the most creditable ring deportment and accept the services of only

those professional handlers whose behavior is exemplary. 3. Help the novice exhibitor and breeder. Use kind, constructive and honest criticism. 4. Display good sportsmanship and conduct themselves, whether at home, traveling, at shows,

or in hotels, in such a manner as to reflect credit upon the Puli Club of America, themselves, and the Puli as a breed.

5. Exhibit dogs that are clean, in good physical condition and under control.
