Workshop Theatre Puts Kids Up Front and CentreWorkshop Theatre is very pleased to donate “Miracle on 34th Street” tickets to a worthy cause.

Kids Up Front Calgary is a local non-profit organization that provides children and teens with experiences that foster possibilities, passions and dreams … one ticket a time.

More than 100,000 children in Alberta live below the low-income cutoff, or poverty line. They are kids affected by poverty, abuse, illness and disability. They are newcomers to Canada. They endure trying

OUR LAST PRODUCTION: “War of the Worlds”Our most recent  production was a radio play (in fact three radio plays). The main play was a classic from 75 years ago.  "War of the Worlds" was first broadcast on CBS on October 30th 1938. It was directed and narrated by actor Orson Wells. The story itself was an adaption of the H. G. Wells' novel. During that original broadcast (at the time of Halloween) the voice of a panicked radio announcer broke in with a news bulletin reporting strange explosions taking place on the planet Mars. This was followed later by a report that Martians had landed in New Jersey. This plunged some listeners in 1938into a state of panic.

The Workshop Theatre's re-creation of this play was entertaining and at times scary. But we in the audience did not panic.

It is perhaps better to close your eyes and listen, as we did back in the golden days of radio, rather than watch the Foley artist do their thing.

"The Shadow People" was another play presented. This dates back to 1953 from the Hall of Fantasy, which was dedicated to the supernatural, the unusual and the unknown. This story was about shadow people that are after a young woman. Her piercing scream on the night was memorable.

The third play was "God of Razor" about a man investigating an old Texas mansion. But all is not well, as the town's ancient Gods walk the earth and their followers have no choice but to follow their twisted demands. This was a scary night to celebrate the season of Halloween.  On the night that I was there it was sold out.  Not an empty seat in the house. - Paul Brown
