First day of the individual tournamentPrimer día de la competición individual

On Sunday July 27th in the Municipal Sport Palace Vista Alegre

of Cordoba (ESP) spectators could come and observ the first day

of the individual tournament of the

WUC Badminton 2014. After the

three days of the Team Event it was

the occasion for many players to

play their own card in five individual

disciplines, namely Men's Single,

Women's Single, Men's Double,

Women's Double and Mixed

Double.

With close to 120 matches played it

was a busy day that took place in

t h e h o t c i t y o f C o r d o b a

(Andalousia, Spain) and all eyes

were focused on the seeded

players wondering whether

surprises would take place on this

first day. It's in the mixed doubles –

first discipline where seeded teams

were engaged – that the first

surprises took place. It is first the

Russian pair Fistin/Golobeva, seed

N°5 who have been wiped out by

the power of the Korean pair

Kim/Kang 21/9 21/16. Shortly after

this match, one of the most

interesting and intense match of

the day offered a huge surprise to

the audience with the Korean pair

Kim/Kim (N°4) lost to the Japanese

Matsui/Shinoda 18/21 22/20 22/20.

In the women's single tournament,

the competition lost within ten minutes its seeds 6 and 7. Shih-

Ying Chen (TPE - N°7 – world N°166) faced a tough defeat 21/11

21/13 to the Korean Soyeon Han while Ana Paula Santos (BRA –

N°6 – world N°145) have been victim of Ayla Huser 21/12 25/23 ,

El domingo 27 de julio en el IDM Vista Alegre de Córdoba los

espectadores pudieron ver el primer día del campeonato en la

modalidad individual. Después

de tres dias en los que se jugaron

los partidos correspondientes a

la modalidad por equipos, los

jugadores tienen la oportunidad

de competir para ellos mismos en

Individual Masculino, Individual

Femenino, Dobles Masculino,

Dobles Femenino y Dobles

Mixto.

Con cerca de 120 partidos fué un

día muy ajetreado el que tuvo

lugar en Córdoba teniendo en

cuenta la calor y que todos los

ojos estaban puestos en los

jugadores que esperaban la

oportunidad de dar la sorpresa en

este primer día de competición. Y

fué en Dobles Mixto donde se vio

la primera sorpresa del día

cuando la pareja rusa formada

por Fistin y Golobeva caía

derrotada por la pareja koreana

Kim y Kang. Poco después, en

uno de los partidos más intensos

e interesantes del día, la pareja

koreana formada por Kim y Kim

ca ía de r ro tada an te l os

japoneses Matsui y Shinoda por

18/21, 22/20 y 22/20.

En el torneo individual femenino también hubo sorpresa cuando

la jugadora de Taipei Shih-Ying Chen (numero 166 del mundo)

se encontraba con una dura derrota ante la koreana Soyeon

Han, mientras que la jugadora brasileña Ana Paula Santos,

La Catedral de Córdoba, antigua Mezquita, es uno de los

monumentos más importantes y singulares de la Humanidad. En

su historia se resume la evolución completa del estilo omeya en

España, además de los estilos gótico,

renacentista y barroco de la construcción

cristiana.

El lugar que hoy ocupa nuestra Catedral

de Córdoba, antigua Mezquita, parece

haber estado, desde antiguo, dedicado al

culto de diferentes divinidades. Bajo

dominación visigoda se construyó en este

mismo solar la basílica de San Vicente,

sobre la que se edificó, tras el pago de

parte del solar, la primitiva mezquita. Esta

basílica, de planta rectangular fue

compartida por los cristianos y

musulmanes durante un tiempo. Cuando

la población musulmana fue creciendo, la

basílica fue adquirida totalmente por

Abderramán I y destruida para la definitiva

construcción de la primera Mezquita

Alhama o principal de la ciudad. En la

ac tua l i dad a l gunos e l emen tos

constructivos del edificio visigodo se encuentran integrados en el

primer tramo de Abderramán I.

La gran Mezquita constaba de dos zonas diferenciadas, el patio

o sahn porticado, donde se levanta el alminar (bajo la torre

renacentista actual), única intervención de Abderramán III, y la

sala de oración o haram. El espacio interior se dispone sobre un

concierto de columnas y arcadas bicolores

de gran efecto cromático. Cinco son las

zonas en las que se divide el recinto,

correspondiendo cada una de ellas a las

distintas ampliaciones llevadas a cabo.

The Cathedral of Cordoba, the former Mosque, is arguably the

most significant monument in the whole of the western Moslem

World and one of the most amazing buildings in the world in its

own right. The complete evolution of the

Omeyan style in Spain can be seen in its

different sections, as well as the Gothic,

Renaissance and Baroque styles of the

Christian part.

The site which the Mosque-Cathedral

occupies has been used for the worship

of different divinities since ancient times.

Under the rule of the Visigoths, the

Basilica of San Vicente occupied this

very site, and later, after the Moslems

bought part of the plot of land, a primitive

Mosque was built. The basilica was

rectangular in shape, and for a while was

shared by Christians and Moslems. As

the Moslem population increased, the

ruler Abderraman I acquired the whole

site and demolished the basilica to make

way for the first Alhama (main) Mosque

in the city. Some of the original building

materials from the Visigothic basilica can

still be seen in the first section of the Mosque built by Abderraman

I.

The great Mosque is made up of two distinct areas, the courtyard

or sahn, with its porticos (the only part built by Abd al- Rahman III),

where the minaret stands - nowadays, encased in the

Renaissance tower - and the prayer hall, or haram. The area

inside is made up of a forest of columns

with a harmonious colour scheme of red

and white arches. The five separate

areas of the Mosque correspond to

each of the five extensions carried out.

toma en bares y mesones acompañado de una

copa de vino, cerveza o refresco. Las tapas son de

varios tamaños: la individual (en algunos sitios

llamada “pincho”), la media ración (plato mediano)

y la ración (un plato para grupo). Se va de bar en

bar, degustando las especialidades de cada

establecimiento. Entre otras os recomendamos las tapas de

queso o jamón serrano acompañadas de un vino de la tierra tinto

o blanco. Son típicas de Córdoba las tapas de salmorejo, rabo

de toro y flamenquín. Buen provecho.

friends or family. A tapa is an appetizer or starter

that is served in bars and restaurants with a

glass of wine, a beer or a soft drink. Tapas come

in different sizes: an individual (at some places it

is called a pincho), a media ración (medium-

sized dish) and a ración (for a group). People go

around to different bars, trying the specialties at

each place. Some that we recommend are cheese or serrano

ham tapas with a glass of red or white Spanish wine.

Salmorejo (a cold, soup-like mixture with a bread and tomato

base), rabo de toro (bull tail) and flamenquín(a fried pork and

ham roll) are traditional tapas in Cordoba. Enjoy.
