The Word for Today Anger Management

‘A quick-tempered man acts foolishly.’ Proverbs 14:17 NKJV

The truth is that when your temper gets the best of you, it reveals the worst of you. The Bible says three things about unrighteous anger that you need to keep in mind:

(1) It’s stupid. Simple as that. ‘A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, and a man of wicked intentions is hated.’ (Proverbs 14:17 NKJV) Mark Twain wrote: ‘Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.’

(2) It’s divisive. ‘A hot-tempered person starts fights; a cool-tempered person stops them.’ (Proverbs 15:18 NLT) Occasionally we may become angry for good reason. But most of the time it’s because we’re selfish, impatient, irritated, or hurt about the way we have been treated. Humourist Will Rogers once said, ‘People who fly into a rage seldom make a good landing.’ Instead of solving the problem, anger only makes it worse.

(3) It’s destructive. ‘Hot-tempered people must pay the penalty. If you rescue them once, you will have to do it again.’ (Proverbs 19:19 NLT) That means when you keep losing your temper, you keep losing. You will lose friends, you will lose the love and respect of your family, you will lose your business associates, and it can even cause you to lose your health. John Hunter, a psychologist who had a severe heart condition, said, ‘My life is at the mercy of the person who can make me angry… the first scoundrel who gets me angry can kill me.’

And guess what? That scoundrel can be you! So, ask God to help you control your anger.

Bill Bedford – Pilot Extraordinaire

In a previous story I featured Robert Bedford of Kyancutta and his fascination with Aviation. His son Bill Bedford also was a keen aviator and his love of flying soon turned into a voluntary air ambulance service. He is credited with saving scores of lives……Graham Waters Bill’s love of aircraft started when aeroplanes started landing at the Kyancutta aerodrome and when Eyre Peninsula Airways started. Bill took every opportunity to take a flight and soon decided to buy an aircraft. Bill wrote his memoirs in a book titled “A Thousand Hours of Flying Light Aircraft” the following is an extract from his book. ”After the war some surplus Tiger Moth aircraft were sold in Western Junction, Tasmania, and I sent the auc-tioneers a deposit. Next thing I received a telegram. “Purchased on your behalf Tiger Aircraft £62/10/-.” Well I was now the owner of a trainer aircraft in flying condition, but no one to fly it, An offer to check and deliver it for £100 was accepted and soon our first permanently based aircraft arrived at Kyancutta. In November 1947 I had my first les-son, Roy Goon my instructor and I took of from Port Pirie and I logged my first hour and 15 minutes.” When BCA Flying Doctor services based there D.H.83 Fox Moth at Kyancutta Bill extended his hanger to take two planes. In June 1949 Bill logged his first hundred hours and started to do emergency flights with doctors, sisters and patients to Cook, Coober Pedy, Port Lincoln, Kimba etc. in all kinds of weather. Bill used The D.H. Fox Moth until 1953 then purchased an Auster to continue his ambulance work. Again from Bill’s book. “My longest day’s work was a trip to Coober Pedy to pick up a 86 year old man who had fallen down a mine shaft. Towards evening we received a call and headed to Coober Pedy 450 miles north north-west. Land-ing at Mt Eba to refuel we could not contact Coober Pedy to check if the flare path was set so we stayed the night. The next morning 40 minutes before first light and until the compass could be read I flew by the morning star which was approximately east – I hoped. At daylight, after a few minutes of frantic landmark hunting, I found I was about 5 miles off course. We landed at the strip just after sunrise. After picking up the poor old chap we flew to Parafield where an ambulance was waiting. We refuelled again and headed back to Kyancutta where we arrived just after dark and landed with the aid of a bonfire, We covered 908 miles in 9 hours flying time. Another time the matron of the Port Lincoln hospital phoned: “Can you fly a patient to Adelaide immediately?” I load-ed the stretcher and was soon at Port Lincoln aerodrome. A hospital sister was waiting and stepped into the plane, I said “Where is the patient?” Sister said ‘here” and showed me a cardboard box – not much larger than a shoe box – which contained a tiny 24 hour old Rh baby, to be taken to Adelaide for a blood transfusion.” Bill continued flying patients until an ambulance plane was stationed at Whyalla in 1965. Bill was the owner of five aircraft, The Tiger Moth, 2 Austers and 2 Airadale Beagles, One of the Beagles in conjunction with Kevin Barns. Bill Bedford passes away aged 62. The chairman of the LeHunte District Council W. L. Wilkins praised Bill in a newspa-per story after his death. “He had flown hundreds of hours and thousands of miles on missions of mercy with his planes and had never asked for any reward. The council and the residents of Eyre peninsula had tried many times to have Mr Bedford’s outstanding work recognised in the New Years and Queens Birthday honours but had failed to get the support of successive State and Federal Governments. We could never understand how public servants who had merely done their duty and sports persons who had been well rewarded for there performances could be recognised every year, but a community service as outstanding as this could repeatedly be denied recognition.” Mr Wilkins said. The Lehunte district honoured Bill’s memory with a framed citation in the “W.R. Bedford” Terminal at the Wudinna Airport.

The only criteria to be eligible for the service are as follows: • The person is in a caring role. This could be caring

and/or providing support for a person with a disability, mental health issue, substance misuse issue, dementia or caring for somebody who is frail and/or aged.

• The Carer must be over 18-years of age. • The Carer must be unpaid, ie. they are not employed

Please be active and vigilant. Fire hazard is real and the devastating effect of fire can be heart breaking and life threatening.

Fuel Breaks and Block Clearance All landowners should have taken the following action to assist the reduction of fire hazards: • Within 20m of a prescribed building, reduce grass and under-

growth to a maximum height of 10cm; • If the land is a vacant block, under half a hectare in area, reduce

all grass and undergrowth to a maximum height of 10cm over the whole block;

• On cropping land and vacant blocks over half a hectare in area, establish and maintain a fuel break around the whole perimeter. The fuel break shall be at least a four (4) metre strip on which all grass and undergrowth is reduced to a maximum height of 10cm.

Council is committed to working with the Country Fire Service to ensure that our bushfire risk is controlled as far as possible, and we are seeking the support of landowners to make our region as safe as possible.

Wudinna District Council has been advised by the Federal Government that it will again receive funding to provide assistance to communities in drought affected areas through the Drought Communities Funding Program. As in 2018/19, the funding is for $1M.

The funding focuses on enhancing community infrastructure, providing local jobs and stimulating the district economy. Projects must be completed by 31 December 2020.

At its meeting on Tuesday 19th November, Council determined on this occasion it would like to focus on larger projects with demonstrated enduring benefit for the community.

Council invite expressions of interest for projects from the community for consideration to be nominated as part of this Drought Communities Funding Round.

While there is a focus on larger projects, it does not preclude smaller project ideas from being considered.

Expressions of interest must be in writing, clearly scoped, costed and provide evidence of benefit to community infrastructure and employment of local people. They need to be submitted by close of business, 5pm Monday 9th December by email to [email protected] or to Council directly at its offices in Burton Tce, Wudinna.

Community representatives interested in putting in an expression of interest are actively encouraged to discuss their project idea with Council beforehand by contacting Craig Midgely, Economic and Community Development Manager on 8680 2002 or email [email protected]

A significant number of residents are overfilling their garbage bins to the point that the bin lid will not close. Bins that are overfilled are difficult to empty and can cause litter to spill and attract unwanted pests. It also causes an amenity issue for surrounding properties as the smell is no longer contained within the bin and it is quite unsightly to see waste spilling out of bins.

If you need extra bin capacity, contact Council for additional service options and costs.

It has been over twelve months since Council commence mechanised kerbside waste collection, restricted access to the waste transfer sites and introduced disposal charges at the waste sites. Overall, the transition has been quite successful and we thank you all for your cooperation during the transition period. A review of the services was conducted at the November Council meeting and some changes to the opening hours at the waste transfer sites were adopted as a means to better utilise Council’s resources.

Please be advised that new opening times for our refuse site and transfer stations as of 1 January 2020 will be: Monday Wednesday Thursday Friday Sunday

Outside Ideas aim to complete the civil construction component of the Eyre Highway Streetscape Project by early December 2019. The construction of the project took a little longer than anticipated due to various, unpredictable factors that arose whilst the works were being conducted.

Council has received a number of comments regarding the installation of the pedestrian refuge near the Australian Farmer sculpture. It was a requirement of the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) that this be installed. Council have previously raised concerns about the inconvenience this installation causes for wide loads travelling on the Eyre Highway. As a result of this, DPTI have approved the removal of the pedestrian refuge, at their cost.

The next phase of the project will be for SA Power Networks to underground the powerlines in front of the Wudinna and Districts Telecentre. We have not been provided with a specific date for this yet but it will occur in the first three months of 2020.

Council are currently developing the plans for the landscaping component of the project and considering our options to complete these works in a time and cost efficient manner.
