Sit-down strike of Warths women The Carthusian monastery in Ittingen (Ittingen Charterhouse) was always an important part of Warth. The inhabitants, and in particular the women, could attend church services there. In 1461, after a crisis in the Augustinian monaste- ry, foreign Carthusian monks took over the im- poverished Ittingen. They lived according to their rules of strict seclusion and the church was closed to the inhabitants of Warth. The furious women, having forced their way into the church, held a sit-down strike and resisted all efforts to drive them out until they were pro- mised a chapel for themselves in Warth.
