From The Principal's Desk
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
The final eight teaching and learning days are ahead of us and we are really looking forward to celebrating the end of term with as much energy as when we started. Despite this term drawing to an end it is vitally important that all students maintain their high attendance at school. The last few days of term are a great way to celebrate the great work that you have completed, great friends you have made and the wonderful learning opportunities you have experienced.
Understanding Achievement – Semester 1 Reports
Our teachers are currently preparing end of Semester 1 reports for students and families. Throughout the Semester, class and specialist teachers have worked diligently to ensure that students have multiple opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills across a range and balance of assessment tasks. These tasks have been moderated, to ensure consistency and comparability between classes. The suite of summative assessment tasks is then used to form an on balance overall achievement level for the learning area.
What makes an ABCD or E is pre-determined by a scale of achievement against a standard. Student evidence of learning is marked against a predetermined standard that aligns with the Australian Curriculum Year Level Achievement levels.
It is important to note that a “C” or “SOUND” no longer means that the student is simply in the middle of the class. It means that the student has met the achievement standard for a learner
at the year level. “C” or “SOUND” would indicate that the student is doing everything required at their year level at school. The best description is to say that a “C” means that the student’s academic development is exactly where it needs to be. That means attaining a “C” for Achievement means you are ON TARGET for the year level achievement standard.
Some students will find that they are allocated ratings outside of the ‘sound’ area. These students may demonstrate higher and more complex learning outcomes and will therefore be allocated an A or B, indicating that they have consistently demonstrated evidence of learning above the standard. There will also be students who will find they are still working towards achieving the full complement of skills and concepts within an achievement level. Further information is also printed inside the Report Card.
Report cards will be provided to students at the end of next week. If you require additional copies please make contact with the office and the office staff will provide you with additional copies.
PBL (Positive Behaviour For Learning)
MATTERS
The Value for this week is “Safety” with a focus on “I use the toilets in a safe, appropriate manner”.
This week students will be reminded about which toilet block to use and the importance of using the toilets correctly and hygienically. Students are also encouraged to use the
amenities during break times to ensure that their learning time is maximised in the classroom. As always, we encourage students to report any problems or issues directly to a staff member.
A special thanks to all parents who take the time each week to sit down and talk to their child/ren about the week’s Value and focus. If any parents have any queries or concerns or wish to discuss anything, please feel free to contact Mrs Keiryn Clements (Deputy Principal) on 46 368 333.
OPTIMISM
Optimism is an outlook on life such that one maintains a view of the world as a positive place. Optimists are people who refuse to feel helpless and don’t give up when faced with seemingly impossible problems. They expect to succeed, believe in themselves and remain positive. Optimists generally believe that people and events are inherently good, so that most situations work out for the best in the end.
Optimism includes the assumption I can do something to change this situation for the better, whereas pessimism includes the assumption probably nothing I do will make any difference. Of course, when you're optimistic, you are more willing to take action to change things for the better, which increases the likelihood that things will change for the better; that's how optimism becomes self-fulfilling.
How do children develop optimism? As children grow and develop, they need as many opportunities as possible to experience success. Every time children achieve something they set out to do, they start to develop a belief that they can go on trying and have more successes. ‘Self talk’ is what we say to ourselves to explain the things that happen through the day. When children are able to say to themselves that they can do something, they are more likely to succeed.
Recent research has indicated that success experiences and positive interactions with parents, teachers and significant others are critical factors in children learning optimism. The way that adults think about and talk about their experiences are very powerful in shaping a child’s beliefs about why success or failure might happen.
The more optimistic children are, the more able they are to succeed and have a sense of the future and the more they are able to make friends and learn at school.
What parents can do:
Be a good role model - let your children hear how you make sense of a situation (your ‘self talk’) and share your positive thoughts with your children.
Re-phrase what your child says - say things or use different words to make more positive sense out of a situation. Child: "I never have anyone to play with." Parent: "Sometimes it’s hard to find a friend, but last week you had a good time with Mary."
Tell your own stories of overcoming hardships - "When I was at school I thought . . but then I realised . . . "
Give encouragement - "What were your thoughts when you were losing that tennis game?", "How did your thoughts change to help you to move from losing to winning?" Help your child catch the helpful and unhelpful thoughts and stick with the helpful ones.
Remember to share some of the old sayings:- "If at first you don’t succeed - try, try again."- "There’s no such word as can’t."- "Every cloud has a silver lining."
Draw your child’s attention to media and highlight public figures or winning teams who have overcome hardship.

Craft News
Craft – On Thursdays, in the Function Room from 9am
Ever thought about coming along to our Craft Day?....
It’s not just about craft... There are no requirements to be “crafty”. It’s a place for meeting new people, enjoying a cuppa and having a laugh, while coming up with ideas for items to sell at our various stalls throughout the
year.
We create and package bought and donated items and share knowledge and ideas.
We are now working on various items for our Fathers Day Stall which will be held in late August.
All profits we make go back to the school via initiatives from the P&C.
Come for an hour, half a day, once a fortnight, whatever works for you. All welcome!
If you cannot make it to craft but would like to contribute either by making or donating something.....
Please contact Deb H on 0413880324 or Deb M on 0432657621
New people = new ideas and skills to share!!!
