Notes from the President
Hi Everybody:
We just completed our Annual Meeting
(March 22) at Shock-N-All Recreation Center in
Flatwoods, WV. The spaghetti dinner was good.
We had about 48 in attendance. Our guest speaker
was Jon Hammond, WVU Rifle Coach, speaking
about their 16th National Championship and the
teams visit to the White House. We also heard
from Jim Kilgore, NRA Senior Field
Representative, West Virginia; Western Virginia
and Western Maryland.
Elections were conducted during the
business part of the meeting. Our new Secretary is
Linda Gruver of Daniels. Treasure Amy Tenney
was re-elected. A new District Director, Dave
Gruver for District 9 was elected. He is replacing
Steve Lindsay, a Past President and long time
District Director. Steve says he wants to stay active
and help the State Association. Thanks to Steve for
all the years of service. Other District Directors re-
elected were District 1, Fritz Hemmpleman, District
5, Paul Bisher and District 7, Delores Williams.
Welcome Linda and Dave Gruver of Daniels and
congratulations to those re-elected.
We had a short message from Lexi
Rusnack, the NRA ILA liaison for WV. She said
she enjoyed her visit and dinner.
Mike Moore, Coach of the WV Jr. Shooters
introduced Junior Robert McNair for his winning
success at Camp Perry last year.
Bill Shank, Coach of the Putnam Co. Small
Bore Rifle team introduced Noah Barker for a clean
sweep score of 400 w/23x’s.
Jon Hammond, WVU Rifle Coach
Legislation: We have two gentlemen, JR
Hill and Jim Pennington, that co-chair our
legislative activities by monitoring Bills being
introduced, responding to such issues we can’t
support and by contacting individuals to help
support issues where we can. They have been very
active. We are watching HB 3018, which if passed
can increase taxes on ammo by 50% and 20% on
firearms. You need to help by calling your
Representatives now!
Web-Site: Bear with us as we are in the
process of re doing our web-site shortly.
Clubs and Juniors: if you are planning to
participate at our State Matches and go to Camp
Perry for Nationals and could use some support,
contact the State Association, your District Director
or an Association Officer. Maybe we can help.

Bill Shank presenting the Clean Sweep Award to Noah Barker.
New Raffles: We are planning on new
raffles for 2014. The 1911 45 ACP went over very
well and we will try to add on an M1 Garand. We
will be at Hunting and Fishing Days at Stonewall
Jackson in September and the Charleston Hunt
Show in January. Watch for details and for Tickets.
Last years 1911 45ACP Winner was Sandy
Workman from Elkins.
Shooting Seminars: We have had an offer
from a Distinguished Shooter, Capt. Don Bartlett to
teach High Power Rifle Classes at White Horse
Range. We will consider some Pistol Classes also
at little or no cost if there is interest. If interested
contact one of the officers by June 30.

events. Support us when you can. Thanks for your
attention.

WINTER INDOOR 1800 BULLSEYE MATCHES
Two winter indoor 1800 bullseye pistol
matches were held in February and March of 2014
at L&S Indoor Pistol Range in Caldwell, near
Lewisburg, WV. Each 1800 aggregate consisted of
a 900 .22 match and a 900 center fire match shot at
50 feet. Eighteen individuals shot in the February
match with two relays and nine shooters
participated in the March match and one relay was
fired.
Lisa Hudnall, owner of L&S Indoor Pistol
Range, was extremely pleased with the turnout and
wishes to hold more monthly matches this
November and January through March of 2015.
Lee Godbey arranged and set the dates for
each match and Dave and Linda Gruver assisted
with the registration, scoring and recording of the
matches. A special thanks is in order to Dave and
Linda for completely running the match in March.
Lee was very pleased with the number of shooters
that turned out for these winter matches. He said
that, “it was a good way to keep in practice over the
long winter months and it was also good to stay in
touch with all the shooters across the state.”
Gratitude is extended to Jim Pennington for
providing the registration and scoring cards and
also assistance in how to write up a match bulletin.
Vern Reichenbecher won the grand
aggregate match held in February. William Murphy
won the Master class, Vern won the Expert class,
Jim Pennington won the Sharpshooter class and CJ
King won the Marksman class. The grand
aggregate winner in March was Dave Gruver.
William Murphy won the Master class, again, and
Don McKenzie won the Marksman class.
A special thank you is extended to all the
shooters that turned out this past winter to make
these matches a great success. High hopes for
another good shooter turnout is in order for this
coming winter, weather permitting.
Respectfully submitted by:
Lee Godbey

SR1911 gun raffle. Thanks to all who sold tickets

The raffle was very successful raising in excess of
$3,600 for the Association.

Annual Hunt and Fish show in September at
Stonewall Jackson State Park.

West Virginia (Y.E.S.) Youth Educational Summit Program, Inc.
The West Virginia (Y.E.S.) Youth
Education Summit program is new starting in 2014,
in conjunction with National Y.E.S.. Its purpose is
to introduce high school sophomores and juniors to
their state government and the roles that future
generations of voters will play. A special emphasis
is also placed on the benefits of firearms ownership.
The main goals of this program are to give
these students the opportunity to develop an
awareness and desire to participate in all levels of
government, learn about their state's unique heritage
and history, and obtain a better understanding of
volunteer organizations and how young citizens can
become involved in serving their communities.
Students spend three days October 16-19,
2014 in the state capital visiting with legislative and
political leaders, and learning about their state's
history by touring the Capital complex,
Governors’Mansion, museums and historical sites.
In addition, students are introduced to various
career opportunities, relating directly or indirectly
to their interest in firearms, such as law
enforcement or military service. Careers in wildlife
and conservation are also included within this
scope. Students also practice their public speaking
and debate skills through carefully designed group
exercises.
Funding for the program comes primarily
through grants from each state's State Fund
Committee. Funding may also be secured through
other sponsors or donors. The end result is that
students attend Y.E.S. free of charge, though they
are required to cover their own transportation costs
to and from the program.
The program teaches valuable leadership
skills and promotes students to become involved as
active citizens in their local community.
State volunteer not only are they teaching today’s
youth about the history and mission of the NRA,
but also cultivating communication and leadership
skills that students will carry on with them for the
rest of their lives. If you find you are interested in
this, we are currently accepting applications from
qualified high school sophomores and juniors to
participate in The West Virginia (Y.E.S.) Youth
Education Summit program. Application deadline is
July 30, 2014.

The 2014 Shooting Season opened for
Brassmasters with a Cowboy Action Match on
April 13th, followed by the Mountaineer Regional
Pistol Championships April 26th & 27th. Although
the participation level was down from last year’s
regional, we still drew competitors from Ohio,
Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Canada and
throughout West Virginia. Brassmasters’
Tournament Officials have attributed the lower
turnout to earlier tournament dates, competition by
other matches/tournaments held during these dates
and a scarcity of ammunition and reloading
components. However, the two-day tournament
experienced some good scores, a return of seasoned
(old) shooters that have reentered conventional
(bullseye) pistol competition after long hiatuses and
several new shooters. Briefly, results of the
Mountaineer Regional Championships are as
follow:
2700 Bullseye Tournament
