Athletes swim, run and cycle to finish Triathlon is another hit By Emma Curry [email protected] EXCITEMENT and 346 sweating athletes filled Sevenoaks’ sunny town centre on Sunday. The first competitors in Sev- enoaks Tri Club’s biannual triath- lon plunged into the Sevenoaks Leisure Centre swimming pool at 6.45am. They swam 400 metres before rushing to collect their bikes and cycling 15.5 miles through Hilden- borough, Shipbourne and Plax- tol. Having puffed back into Sev- enoaks, they then ran five miles through scenic Knole Park. Competitors were in high spir- its and everyone had something positive to say about the event. Sarah Green and Richard Smith of the Metropolitan Police triathlon team said it was their favourite event of the year and “half the price of most, but twice as good!” For Barney Willard of Sev- enoaks and Susan Freeburn from Hastings, who finished the race five minutes apart, it was their first time competing in the Sev- enoaks triathlon. Miss Freeburn said: “It felt good. The swim was my favourite, the cycle was OK, but the run was tough.” Two more first-timers were physiotherapists Susie Vankessel from Wadhurst and Rachel Hoop- er from Tonbridge. Mrs Vankessel was supported by her husband and three sons and said: “The cycle was tough, but everyone is very friendly and supportive.” Both women were pleased to have completed the race in less than two hours. Veteran Meanwhile, veteran competitor 65-year-old Edward Oatley has tackled every Sevenoaks triathlon since it started in the 1980s. The retired headmaster of Sev- enoaks Preparatory School, who swims every morning and travels everywhere on his bike, said: “I am very proud that Sevenoaks puts on events like this.” He recorded a time of 2hr 29min 59secs. The 10 fastest athletes did a mass start at 9.45am. Mark Whit- taker of Deal won the race overall with a time of 1hr 19mins 47secs. Aurelie Almeida-Heasman, founder of the TriTouch sports massage for triathletes, who also works in the support crew for the British team at the World Cham- pionships, provided pre and post- race massages. She said: “We have been sup- ways an enjoyable day.” Sevenoaks Tri Club member and race marshal Debbie Munton said: “Seasoned triathletes come because the event is so well or- ganised, whilst novices come for the friendly, relaxed atmo- sphere.” The race’s oldest competitors, Edward Brown, 74, and Helen James, 75, came home in 3hrs 38mins 01sec and 2hrs 41mins 43secs respectively. EXCITEMENT and 346 sweatingathletes filled Sevenoaks’ sunnytown centre on Sunday.

The first competitors in Sev-enoaks Tri Club’s biannual triath-lon plunged into the SevenoaksLeisure Centre swimming pool at6.45am.

They swam 400 metres beforerushing to collect their bikes andcycling 15.5 miles through Hilden-borough, Shipbourne and Plax-tol.

Having puffed back into Sev-enoaks, they then ran five milesthrough scenic Knole Park.

Competitors were in high spir-its and everyone had somethingpositive to say about the event.

Sarah Green and RichardSmith of the Metropolitan Policetriathlon team said it was theirfavourite event of the year and“half the price of most, but twiceas good!”

For Barney Willard of Sev-enoaks and Susan Freeburn fromHastings, who finished the racefive minutes apart, it was theirfirst time competing in the Sev-enoaks triathlon.
