Dear Santa,I have been very, very good this year. I have thought of everyone but myself. This Christmas I want only one gift under the tree –

a Gift Certificate to AESTHETIC CONCEPTS

where I can choose anything I want to help restore my beauty. They have so many things I can choose. They have the most advanced treatments in wrinkle reduction, DOT Therapy skin resurfacing, ReFirm skin tightening, FotoFacial, Botox, Dermal Fillers, chemical peels, liposuction, varicose vein therapy and spider vein treatment.

Don’t worry, I won’t be offended if you get me this. I know that you love me just the way I am, but I just want to be a younger, healthier-looking version of myself for the New Year. Just give the gals at Aesthetic Concepts a call or visit their website for all sorts of information.

I love you just the way you are, too! (And yes, they also treat men!)

Love and kisses,

Mrs. Claus

If the only prayer you said in your whole life

was, “thank you,” that would suffice.

Meister Eckhart

To my family, my friends, my neighbors, my readers, my advertisers and everyone else who makes my life truly amazing …THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.Have a wonderful Turkey Day!

Have you ever noticed that some people just seem to have a sunny, optimistic outlook on

life? No matter what is happening, they always appear to be pleasant and positive. What is their secret for maintaining such a positive perspective, especially when life delivers a bowl of lemons? How do they manage to turn their lemons into refreshing lemonade, when all that you can squeeze out is a sour pucker? A positive attitude towards life is rooted in a thankful heart.

Choose your thoughts. What you choose to think about, and meditate on, you magnify. Start each day by reading something motivational and inspirational. My favorites are the Bible and the Woman’s Advantage Calendar quote-of-the-day. I also listen to uplifting music and spend time in prayer and meditating on all that is good, possible, and healing. Think about all the things you have to be thankful for today.

Choose your words. Your words will reveal what is in your heart;

that is why it is so important to make sure your thoughts are focused on good things. Pause and think before you speak. Ask yourself if what you are going to say is beneficial, uplifting, and useful. Too often, we get in the habit of simply complaining. We complain about the traffic, the price of things, rude people, lack of time, too much work – and the list goes on and on. Speak words of gratitude. Look for opportunities to say “thank you” to others throughout the day. Choose your actions. Gratitude is expressed through your actions. A thankful heart overflows with gratitude and blesses others. Out of your abundance, you generously give. It may be a smile, a word of encouragement, or a patient pause as someone takes a bit too long in the grocery line. Look for ways to thank those in your family, at work, and in your community. Your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, and your actions become your life. Look for the good in every day and in every person. Meditate on all you have to be thankful for, and celebrate every favor. You may purchase the 2011 Woman’s Advantage Calendar at our website www.finaltouchschool.com. ■

Emily on Insurance

Emily, My family currently has life insurance through my husband’s work, but should we purchase life insurance outside work also? Why would we need both?

— Susan M.

Dear Susan, It is truly imperative that you purchase life insurance away from your employee benefits. You are not required to carry life insurance through your employer. When you retire from your company 90% of the time you cannot take your benefits with you when you leave. If you have not purchased life insurance outside of your company it would be difficult to purchase life insurance at the age of retirement and you may no longer qualify. What if you make the decision to work for a different company? Your benefits will not move with you. If you do not obtain life insurance now while you are healthy – you may not qualify for life insurance at a later time. Another important aspect is that the economy is currently requiring several businesses to make cuts and one of the first cuts is life insurance. Let me tell you an experience I had. Two years ago a young married couple 19-years-old came into my office for insurance. They just had their first child and we began to discuss life insurance. Together the parents made the decision that the life insurance through the husband’s work was sufficient and they did not need additional life insurance. A short time after that the wife came into my office requesting to remove her husband off the insurance. I asked the wife the reasoning why and her answer just shocked me. She stated that her husband had been killed in an accident at work. She became hysterical and told me that her husband only had $10,000 worth of life insurance through work and she could no longer be a stay at home mom. I would not want for this situation to happen to you or anyone else for that matter. If you choose to only carry one life insurance policy please keep it outside of your employee benefits for your protection. ■

Dear Friend, I just want to take a moment to thank you.

Thank you for being you, and thank you for being there for me. There are so many things about you that I am grateful for, that I just don’t know where to begin. You always seem to be aware when things go wrong for me, and you do just the right things. You respond so well to my warning signs! Last year,

when I was so sick, you fretted right beside me until I was well, then you got me that antivirus and helped me keep it up to date. I’ve hardly had a hiccup since.

You’ve been so good keeping me updated on everything! I never seem to miss an update, and that makes me feel secure and protected. You also like to help me stay in-style. When you upgraded me, you said it was for you, but now I think more clearly and have a bigger vision of the world. Thanks for the new RAM and monitor! Things have changed a little since last year. I had to adapt to your new program. It was tough at first and I had doubts, but you were right there with me, sweating to learn it. Now it is a part of our new routine, and aren’t we much more productive? Words fall short. How can I express my gratitude for the way you back me up, the way you shut me down when I am running too much, how you blow my mind when the cobwebs and dust of the daily grind get me bogged down. I’m grateful to be your friend, and because you do all this for me and more, I promise to do my best for you! — Your Computer!

As a company grows and moves forward, the desire to reward employees for their input begins to surface as does the question, “Do

you deserve a raise?” When you work for someone else you must present answers to this question that best reflect your skills, talents, productivity and effectiveness. After careful consideration of your answers, a decision will be made that will determine your “value” to the company in terms of spendable dollars. But what if you are self employed? How is your value

determined? I believe as self-employed women,

we must learn the task of skill identification and company value - starting with ourselves. Too

often, we fall into a rut of daily doing things as we have always done them. We become so busy about the task of “doing” our work, we lose our creativity. So today, take time for self-examination and seek the “raise” you deserve. Interview yourself and construct a merit raise form. Let’s see how you rank. Are your skills polished? Have you taken time to improve your job performance by adding training and reading mew information as it applies to skills that will be used daily? Pleading for that raise is not effective - no one moves forward sounding needy! How’s your time management skills? Are you working at an effective level of performance? Do you know how to start the day quickly or do you waste time determining what to do next? Learn to manage time before it manages you. To do lists are excellent tools if you use them to organize and block time. Do not allow them to burden you with unreachable task loads. How’s your organization? Have you confused running around looking for what to do next as positive activity? Develop a plan to move effectively through your day, producing maximum output. Having a place for everything and having everything in it’s place is a good starting point. Is your productivity operating at a below or above expectation level? Talking and planning will only take you so far. You must follow-through, complete your projects and deliver on time! Productivity is measured by product or service out the door not project begun. How effective are you in the role you are assigned? This is a great way to survey your company needs and decide if you need additional staff in order to continue growing. It also identifies areas that need strengthening. How’s your follow-through on customer service? Ask the tough questions and determine as an employer and employee if you have earned that raise. Think of the areas discussed above as points on a star. Work to improve areas that are weak and applaud your strengths. You are the star in your company. Shine bright enough that others follow the light. Invest that raise in yourself. You deserve it! ■

We’ve been asked that question so often that we crafted a response for the

back page of the gogo! menu. Since nobody ever reads the back of the menu we are still tasked with answering the question on occasion. The standard, well-practiced response includes factors like demographics, real estate costs, market trends and labor pool. All those factors are important but can be easily solved by opening in a metropolitan area. Finding a spot to open a business that reflects the personality, values, and aspirations of an owner is a bit more difficult. While most well seasoned restaurateurs would not have chosen Boyd, the space that is now gogo! spoke to us on a level that no other location had. We considered many sites but only Boyd held the promise of small town living, proximity to family, a central demographic and the ability to make an impact on a community. The tangible impact of opening in Boyd can certainly be measured. gogo! employs people, pays taxes, feeds a lot of guests, and gogogiving! makes significant contributions to the South Wise Services Food Pantry, our charity of choice. As a business, gogo! is successful, but we are most grateful for the intangibles. The staff and guests that have volunteered time at gogogiving! events to help those in need. Many of the original employees remain with the restaurant and continue to evoke a sense of pride as their skills improve and we watch them grow. The relationships we have forged and the quality individuals we have met since opening cannot are invaluable. We are humbled by the response that we have received in Boyd, Wise County and beyond. We believe it is important to live in the community that we serve and are happy to call Boyd our home as well as the home of gogo! We hope and believe that there will be more stories similar to ours as operators choose smaller towns and improved quality of life. Sometime in the last year the marquee outside read,”I’d rather cook in Boyd than Chef in Houston.” Today it would read,”I’d rather cook in Boyd than be anywhere else.” ■

ine What’s a good wine for Thanksgiving

dinner? I hear that question almost every day this time of year and my answer is always the same! There isn’t one. No one wine is going to tie all the diverse flavors of the Thanksgiving meal together. From Aunt Bea’s Sweet Tater Pie, to Uncle Fudd’s Green Bean Casserole, to Cousin It’s Corn Bread Dressing, not to mention Glazed Baked Ham, cranberry sauce, giblet gravy, and all the other great holiday dishes, you just can’t ask any one wine to tie all that entire flavor together. So don’t even try. Instead pick one or two wines that everyone can just enjoy and relax. At our house we have 20 to 30 people for the meal so cost is important. I try to stay in the $10.00 to $15.00 range and still get good wine. I have made a list of some easy drinking wine that everyone from the wine novice to the wine sophisticate can enjoy.

November is that time of year when we focus a bit more on the good

things in life. Thanksgiving puts us in mind to be grateful for our blessings. November is good time to reflect. Wise Woman Magazine has thought it appropriate to reflect and be grateful for, the women who live and work around us. Beginning in this issue, a Wise Woman of the Month will be recognized based on recommendations from our readers. Our very first WISE WOMAN - SHERRY COURSEY LEMON, Wise County Clerk. If you have ever been around Sherry Coursey Lemon, you will recognize her as one who doesn’t wait for Thanksgiving to count her blessings. Every day is its own day for giving thanks. Ask Sherry, the youngest of nine children, who’s had a full share of ups, downs and lemons come her way. So, how/why she is so positively upbeat and genuinely grateful for her life? The most likely explanation she’ll first give is her firm Christian faith. Next, will be love

from and for her family and friends. This energetic woman knows how to take the lemons in life and make her unique brand of lemonade. Her drink is not syrupy sweet. You might find it a bit tart, but it hits the spot and gets the job done. For those of you who may not know, Sherry is the Wise County Clerk and has been since first elected in 1990. Her first race was a seriously contested race she did win. Since that first election, Sherry has run unopposed. She is starting her 6th consecutive 4year term. Rather telling, don’t you think? In order to apprec iate Sherry’s accomplishments some understanding of her job as County Clerk should be detailed. First, she has the voting majority of 60,000 bosses to satisfy. From there, she explains, “My off ice holds people’s lives in their hands

and is responsible for property recordings, maps and plats, vital statistics (birth, death and marriage) livestock bands, misdemeanor criminal, civil and probate plus the Commissioner’s Court records. We are also responsible for the collection and assessment of fees supporting the General Fund and state fees supporting state funding.” Over the years, Sherry has seen the Clerk ’s Off ice work load grow signif icantly. To keep pace with the increased work, Sherry’s staff as grown from 4 in 1990 to its current 12 sworn deputies. Running an efficient service oriented off ice is a responsibility she takes to heart. She put her belief into words. In 1995, she created the Mission Statement for the Office of the County Clerk: “F.A.C.E.S. – Friendly, Accurate, Courteous, Efficient Service. Sherry makes numerous speaking engagements in Wise County and beyond. She belongs to a plethora civic and professional organizations, along with community, religious and scholastic committees, groups and councils. In all her activities she remembers that she works for and represents Wise County. Mrs. Lemon makes herself readily available to the communities throughout the county. She does not stay anonymously behind her desk directing her staff. Twice she has been one of eight nominees in the State of Texas for the

WISE WOMAN OF THE MONTH

By Karen Trott

County Clerk of the Year award (2008 and 2010) and awarded Best Elected Official in 1999. She is a past President of the Decatur Lions Club, member of Wise Merchants, Wise Republican Women and charter member of the area Business Women’s Network. She serves on the Personnel Committee for the First Baptist Church of Bridgeport. Sherry has been profiled in more than a few Texas publications for her leadership, civic and community activities. She has written articles for the Wise County Messenger. She has been a frequent speaker and panelist for the County and District Clerk ’s Association of Texas at the UT Law School, V.G. Young Institute of County Government and the Office of the Secretary of State, Elections Division. Sherry has served on just about every type committee ever created, be it a professional organization, local government or State Legislature body. Accolades abound for Sherry Coursey Lemon but, all has not been an easy go for our Wise Woman. The rough times in Sherry’s life were just that - rough; including a couple of brain surgeries. These non-cancerous events of her life were not to be sneezed at. However, Sherry determined that a full recovery was the only option. And so it was. Sherry is not one to dwell on sour lemons or diff icult times and so this article won’t either. For Sherry, it is the faith, family, friends and people that are the important factors to her life. She is full of quotes and has many in her off ice. She has Honest Abe commenting about making your enemy your friend. Another is about how ‘Life may be a rough ride, but I’m still on the bull (and probably full of bull too) - So I keep smiling - It makes people wonder what you are up to. She has plenty of funny tales to tell as well. Ask her about the “Kick Boxing Demo.” The visual imagery you can conjure up is priceless. Sherry’s personal mantra comes from Dorothy Bernard speaks volumes, “Courage is fear that has said its prayers.” Besides being very good at her job, Sherry loves it. She knows she is doing exactly what she should be doing with her life. A Most WISE WOMAN indeed. ■

In November the library will be publishing a children’s book entitled, The Pets Who Built the Garden. This is a project

that we have been working on since last fall, and I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about the book and to express my gratitude to those involved. Last fall the library began a special Friends of the Library group called Furry Friends of the Library. Any animal may

become a Furry Friend—whether in honor or in memory. The community response was amazing. There are currently over sixty Furry Friends of the library, and they include many dogs and cats, a donkey, a pig,

a horse , a bird and even a monkey! Soon after the great success of our Furry Friends project, library board member Nancy Rosendahl suggested collecting photos of the pets and having young local artists do renditions of them. This began our collaboration with Barbara Pinkerton and her wonderful young artists at the Decatur Art Studio. This summer the artists completed s i x t y watercolor penc i l renderings of the pets. Our next step was to compile the artwork into a children’s book. Library employee Christine Evans used her graphic design education and creativity to design the book and library staff wrote a children’s story around the drawings. The result is a book

that is truly community driven and community oriented, bringing local pet owners and local artists together to create a beautiful book to benefit library programming in our future Community Reading Garden. The library would like to express its deepest gratitude to all our Furry Friends, to Nancy Rosendahl, and to Barbara Pinkerton and all the talented young artists at Pinkerton’s Art Studio for contributing their

time, talent and vision to this project. For more information about the Furry Friends project or The Pets Who Built the Garden, please contact Cecilia at your library at 627-5512. ■

Most of you have seen the color pink just about everywhere this past month. You have seen it

on t-shirts. You have seen it at baseball and football games. Even the NFL has cleats and jerseys with pink on them. Everywhere you look, someone has on a pink bracelet. In case you were wondering, October was breast cancer awareness month. I am betting that many of you know someone who is a survivor or is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. What I want you to think about is what that explosion of pink really means. It means that every day in doctors offices across the world, someone (women and men) is getting the news that their life is about to change dramatically. It means that every day thousands hear that they have breast cancer. It means every day that thousands start medical procedures that are designed to eliminate the evil that is cancer. Awareness. On two separate occasions, my family has gotten “the ca l l ” that informed us that someone very close was recently diagnosed (my step-mom and my mother-in-law). We were shocked and saddened by the news, but we took it on ourselves to look into the treatment that both were undergoing. Both my family members had what most folks see as the standard chemo/radiation treatment. I was not aware at the time what was required in either treatment. It is not something you would choose to undergo. Toxic chemicals and nuclear radiation introduced into your body is no joke. Awareness. So exactly what are you supposed to be “aware”? Be aware that cancer does not discriminate and doesn’t care if you are a man or woman or what race or age you are. Men get breast cancer, too. Be aware that early detection before things get way out of hand is very important. Be aware that there are people around you who need you and your support to beat cancer. Be aware when you see all the pink t-shirts, bracelets, bumper stickers, TV commercials, etc. that there is so much more at work you cannot see. Survivors of any cancer are as tough as they get. Battling and winning against a living organism that is trying to kill you by taking over your cells it tough. Encourage your family and friends (old and young) to be aware and listen to their bodies. Be sure to get checked out by your doctor and don’t ignore symptoms. I know this article may sound like a PSA, but it is so critically important. Your family and those around you will thank you. See you next month. ■

Dear Dave, I requested a copy of my credit report, and noticed there have been several instances where companies have asked for a copy of my report. I was under the impression that this could only be done if you were applying for credit. — Lynn

Dear Lynn, Under the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act anyone with a valid business reason can check your report with, or without, your permission. Some employment applications even state they will be pulling a copy of your report as part of their screening process. It sounds to me like you’ve gotten a bunch of marketing inquiries. That why your mailbox – like most – is full of unsolicited credit card and home equity loan offers. But here’s the good news. You can put a block on your bureau for unsolicited marketing inquiries. This prevents companies from searching your bureau for the sole purpose of offering credit you didn’t request! — Dave

Dear Dave, My fiancé and I are looking to buy a house a couple of months after we’re married. We’ve saved about $50,000 toward the down payment, and the payments on the house we like would only be $202 a month on a 15-year mortgage. Does this sound like a good idea? — Robbie

Dear Robbie, You guys have done a great job saving up all that money. But I think newly-married couples should wait at least a year before buying a house. In that first year of marriage you’ll get to know each other even better than you do now. It will also give you time to figure out just how far away from your in-laws you want to live! Spend the first year loving on each other, and mapping out a plan for your lives together. You can save even more money in the meantime, and if you’re lucky, you might be able to pay cash for that first home when time rolls around. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have to run straight to the real estate office right after you slip the rings on each other’s fingers. That’s a mistake lots of young couples make, and end up regretting it later! — Dave

Of a voting population of about 700, which would be men of voting age, something like

400 served in the Civil War from Wise County?

Surveys were made for a railroad line into Wise County as early as 1856? A company known as the MEMPHIS, EL PASO & PACIFIC made surveys from Texarkana to the West Forks of the Trinity River in Wise County, the grade was made as far as Draco in the W. J. Mann land.

On May 30, 1919, an interurban franchise was granted to Wiley Blair, Rhodes S. Baker and J. A. Kemp, and it was contemplated that a corporation would be formed, this never materialized for Wise County.

The third white child born in Wise County was Betty Woody, daughter of Sam Woody.

Moses and Tom Ball may have been the first residents of the county? Seems they lived in a cave (dugout) in the north part of the county possibly before the pioneers came in from the south.

Do you know why the town of Balsora is spelled with an S rather than a Z? It was originally known as “Wild Horse Prairie.” When time for a name to be given to a post office, the government gave it the name Balzora, but Uncle George Miller, an old timer in the area, asked if they would please change the Z to an S, or change the name altogether, because he could not write a Z. The postal department of the United States government changed the spelling in order that Uncle George would have no trouble writing it. ■

If your family is anything like mine then you’ll be spending the entire day on Thanksgiving

eating. My husband and I actually ended up eating Thanksgiving dinner 5 times our first year together! Over the years we have managed to narrow it down to just a few houses but I still spend most of the day either cooking or enjoying turkey. Unfortunately all that time spent preparing your family’s feast can really add up on your utility bill. So, this month I’m focusing on energy saving in the kitchen. Here are my top tips to save for Christmas while cooking for Thanksgiving

Don’t overcrowd your refrigerator to the point •that air can’t circulate easily. Let food cool before your put it in the refrigerator •and put lids on all liquids. They can give off vapors that increase the load on your compressor.Leave the door to the oven shut while you’re •cooking. Every time you sneak a peek, 25°-50°F is lost.Clean the reflector pans beneath your stovetop •heating elements so they are better able to reflect heat.Use pots and pans with flat bottoms and be sure •they are the right size for the burner. Using a pot with a 6-inch diameter on an 8-inch burner can waste almost half of the energy produced by the burner!Carefully measure water for boiling. There’s no •reason to heat more than you have to.While your oven is still hot, consider making an •extra dish for a family you know in need.

Check out our website for more tips for saving money during the holiday season and have a wonderful Thanksgiving! ■

I’m pregnant –What are my Labor Support Options?

Traci Wann is a lactation educator and mom of three breastfed babies. She has a Masters of Christian Education degree and has taught English in Wise Countyy. She spends her time rocking her babies; serving her church family and helping moms nurture their babies by breastfeeding. She can be reached through [email protected].

It seems to be the case that once a woman sees the positive pregnancy test, life suddenly gets

complicated. So many questions-should I quit my job and stay home? Is my morning coffee hurting the baby? Who will be my care provider? Natural or medicated birth? Who should be in the birth with me as a support person? What about support in the first few weeks after baby is born? Let’s tackle those last questions today. Your baby’s birthday is a day you will never forget. It is even better than the wedding memories! Who is with you in birth and afterwards is a very important decision. Partner/Dad: These days, maternity care does a good job of including dad. He is never considered a hospital visitor (although his “bed” is not very welcoming!) and some midwives and doctors will even allow him to “catch” his baby. The partner often knows the birthing woman like no one else and can be a great comfort and “rock” to her during labor. Family Member: Women often want their mom, sister(s) and sometimes even mother in law with them during labor. Depending on the family member’s personality, this may or may not be a good choice. A mother or sister watching a natural labor unfold may not be able to resist the urge to rescue the laboring mother from the pain. A family member who frets and says, “Oh baby girl, don’t you want an epidural?” is no real help. However, a mother who can cheer her daughter on in her goals could be an asset in the delivery room. Cousin’s ex-wife’s babysitter-just because she wants to see a normal, natural birth. I think you know the answer to this! A birthing woman is not

on display at the zoo and should not be treated as such. Labor can actually stall and even stop all together if the woman feels she is the entertainment for the evening. Doula (Professional Childbirth Assistant). A doula knows the normal sights and sounds of birth and how to comfort a woman and her partner through the intensity of it all. She never takes the place of other support people but instead helps them help mom. An important person to have near in the days after birth is a lactation educator or another woman with up-to-date breastfeeding advice/experience. Breastfeeding is a skill that is easy once mastered, but takes some practice. The birth of a child is one of the most precious events of life. Make sure you surround yourself with people who will give you the support you need for the birth you want. You and your baby will benefit! ■
