what it means to miss New OrleansMusicians explain

Raleigh News & Observer, 07-DEC-05

By DAVID MENCONI

Burly balladeer Aaron Neville never made itback home before Hurricane Katrina hit NewOrleans in late August. Out on tour, he experi-enced the devastation from a distance, watchingon television as the flood ravaged his hometown. Now, he wonders whether he'll ever again callthe city home.

"It's going to be a long, long time before NewOrleans will be livable again," Neville says, speak-ing by phone from his current residence inNashville. "My house was under water, and nowit's full of mold and mildew. . . . I have asthma, andthe doctor told me I couldn't go down there. SoI'll stick around here for a while. How long, Idon't know."

More than any other American city, NewOrleans is defined by music. Memphis andNashville have equally illustrious histories, butyou have to go looking for music. In NewOrleans, music finds you. Dixieland jazz and R&B,blues and funk, Zydeco and Cajun, second-linestreet bands and sit-down jazz orchestras _ it'simpossible to imagine the city without all its dif-ferent kinds of music.

Louis Armstrong helped invent jazz in NewOrleans, a torch that the Marsalis family andHarry Connick Jr. picked up. Irma Thomas, Dr.John and other Big Easy legends still bring atouch of New Orleans wherever they sing andplay the blues. And it wouldn't be Fat Tuesday inNew Orleans without the Neville Brothers'"Mardi Gras Mambo."

But three months after Katrina flooded NewOrleans, the Crescent City's musical communityis still scattered across the country. The diasporaof displaced musicians includes an army of lesser-known journeymen as well as the city's first fami-ly of funk, the Neville Brothers.

Like Aaron,Art Neville is living in Nashville andhasn't decided whether he'll go back. Cyril, whoperformed in a T-shirt reading "Ethnic Cleansingin New Orleans" at a hurricane-relief benefitshow in New York, has settled in Austin,Texas, and says it's for good. Charles moved toMassachusetts years ago.

"New Orleans as we know it no longer existsright now," Aaron Neville says. "It's a memory.New Orleans has been gutted like you'd gut achicken and take the heart and soul, more orless, remove it and scatter it all around the coun-try.There's a lot of people who won't be able togo back because they can't afford to.They losteverything, so they've got to stay where theywound up and try to make ends meet as bestthey can."

If ever New Orleans needed a funeral parade,it's now.And though the city itself is still largelysilent, that funeral-parade spirit has spread inbenefit concerts all over America.

Neville's latest tour, billed as "Christmas withAaron Neville and his Quintet featuring CharlesNeville," will send its proceeds to Habitat for

Humanity's fund for low-income families dis-placed by Katrina. The show plays Durham'sCarolina Theatre on Wednesday.

Branford Marsalis has likewise played a slew ofhurricane-relief shows, and his Marsalis Musiclabel recently released the benefit compilation "ACelebration of New Orleans Music." Also justout is "Our New Orleans:A Benefit Album forthe Gulf Coast" (Nonesuch Recordings), withtracks by Allen Toussaint, Buckwheat Zydeco, Dr.John and others.

Dr. John has made a charity album of his own."Sippiana Hericane" (Blue Note Records)includes a classic New Orleans-style piano work-out called "Sweet Home New Orleans." Despitethe title and jaunty piano rhythms, "Sweet HomeNew Orleans" is as angry as it is mournful:"Politicians talking, each and every day /Promisinghelp is comin' right away (yeah, you're right)."

Even angrier is a bootleg going around theInternet, "George Bush Doesn't Care AboutBlack People," which combines Kanye West's hitsingle "Gold Digger" with the rapper's infamoustelevised statement about President Bush'sresponse to the disaster.

Blues harmonica player Roy "Mel" Melton callsNorth Carolina home, but he has plenty of con-nections to Louisiana. He used to live there, play-ing behind the propulsive rhythms of the lategreat "King of Zydeco" Clifton Chenier, andnowadays he records for Louisiana Red HotRecords. Melton says Hurricane Katrina hasaltered at least one item of classic New Orleansvernacular.

"I heard from the guy who owns my label downthere about the change in an old New Orleanssaying," Melton says. "People down there are

called 'Yats,' because they're always asking eachother, 'Where y'at, man?' But now, the standardgreeting you hear all the time is, 'How's yahouse?' It's still pretty devastated down there, the entire Gulf Coast area. It's still just gone, andit's not coming back. The need is still great."

The state of everyone's house in New Orleansis largely a function of where they live in relationto sea level. Those on higher ground camethrough the storm in decent shape. Pianist EllisMarsalis, patriarch of the acclaimed jazz family, has already gone home.Trombonist DelfeayoMarsalis' house sustained minimal damage, sincehe lives on the third floor of a building in theuptown part of the city. Drummer Jason Marsalis'house was damaged but not destroyed; he's livingin an apartment while his house is restored.

"We all live uptown, so we were lucky," saysDelfeayo Marsalis. "Even so, the city is definitelynot back to normal. It's really like anyone who'sever suffered a major injury _ broken leg, brokenarm, anything. The city is still just in a state ofconstant repair. And the majority of musicianshere do not live uptown."

Clubs and restaurants in the French Quarter areopen again, and the www.frenchquarter.com Website has an optimistic message: "We're all stillhere and more eager than ever to show youwhat joie de vivre really means in New Orleans."But the lower-lying neighborhoods such as theLower Ninth Ward _ where housing was cheap-er, and most of the musicians who gave NewOrleans its distinctive character lived _ were sodevastated that recovery will take years.

The Music Maker Relief Foundation, whichassists musicians in need, has set up a NewOrleans Musicians Fund and can scarcely keep upwith demand. More than three months after

Katrina hit, requests are still coming in from peo-ple on the Gulf Coast who need help moving, rebuilding or paying rent because they can'twork.

"We've taken on 85 people in the last twoweeks," says Music Maker head Tim Duffy. "It gotto where we finally had to cap it because weweren't raising enough money to help everybody. We raised $150,000, but it still wasn't enough. We're still getting four or five calls a day, andthey're all legit. It's really disheartening.A lot ofpeople are still in shock; they're not well psycho-logically. It's just rough. So we do our little part. We've helped a dozen or so people really well. The others, we do what we can.

"You would not believe," Duffy adds, "how grate-ful some of these people are to get a $200 checkand a T-shirt.They say that's the only aid they'vereceived."Distributed by Scripps Howard News Service,http://www.shns.com

Dear Friends,On a recent day at our offices….

An intern from Duke was bringing an artist back to the airport.William Maxwell is a new recipi-ent.We had flown him up from Miami to meet for the first time and he stayed with us for threedays. Max had never recorded before but now would appear in a documentary. He is recoveringfrom surgery for colon cancer and had the time of his life playing with Capt Luke and MacavineHayes. Anthony, the intern, is a photographer and loved the opportunity to shoot Max.When hegets back from the airport he will work on his project to input all of our digital images into adatabase archive and start scanning the negatives into the hard drive.

Amy, our Programs Coordinator has spent a good part of the day on the phone with DukeMedical School. Carl Rutherford, a guitarist and songwriter from West Virginia is back in the hos-pital. He's not sure if he'll make it back out this time and he wants to donate his body to sci-ence. Amy's getting the paperwork set up and is helping Carl with a will. The rest of her day isdedicated to drafting a proposal for a Women's Blues Festival at Meredith College next fall.

Development Assistant, Joanna Johnson is processing donations and filling orders for CDs . Inbetween she fields calls from Gulf musicians requesting aid.We have already taken on over 90new recipients, so there are many she must deny. Tomorrow, she and Amy will supervise 13 sec-ondary students from the Carolina Friends School for a Volunteer Day of assembling CDs andpreparing mailings.

Back in the guesthouse, Executive Director Tim Duffy has a film crew from Los Angeles inter-viewing Slewfoot and Cary B.They hope to get enough footage from each artist they shoot tomake a feature length film on the foundation for PBS and 20 minute pieces on each artist.Theresulting DVDs will be great promotional tools for artists and a fundraising vehicle for the foun-dation.

Denise Duffy,Administrative Director is meeting with volunteer development consultant FredTamalonis and Board member Ryan Costello,They are reviewing the foundation's progress overthe past five years and working on a strategic plan for the upcoming three years.

We like to think of this creative chaos as social entrepreneurship at work. At its best MMRFbrings together artists, donors, volunteers, interns and professionals in an effort to raise the barfor the treatment of musicians in society and improve the quality and quantity of their work, preserve our culture and enrich the community. It has taken us eleven years to bring this modelfrom theory to practice at a level that is sustaining and has meaningful impact on the lives ofover 200 artists and more than 6000 donors. Our vision for the future is to develop an institu-tion that can keep this creative, nurturing process alive and growing.

We wish to thank everyone that donated to our mission last year and we urge everyone else torenew their membership to the Music Maker Relief Foundation.

With warm regards,

Timothy & Denise Duffy

Actually they were hats, the first one he wore onthe cover of “Toot Blues” was something Timbrought back from Kenya. After they came backfrom a show in Holland, one of Gabe’s girlfriendshit him over the head with a bottle and stole hismoney. There was so much blood on the hat, they took it to get dry-cleaned and when it cameback it had shrunk considerably. Luckily on aroad trip to play Lincoln Center in New Yorkthey found a shop that sold these sheepskin hats.Gabe wore it in the summertime in Texas, wher-ever, he just loved his hat.
