CAN PASS ATTITUDE

This week was End of Term 2 examinations week and it was quite

challenging. Some people walked into the room unprepared,

knowing they would perform poorly but that is the wrong attitude

to have, in any other situation. You should always stay positive. “A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst and it sparks extraordinary results” - Wade

HOW TO PERFORM WELL IN EXAMINATIONS

This week we have done our End of Term Examinations and I be-

lieve the best way to perform well is to firstly make sure you start by

preparing early. You do not want to be stressed at the last minute

trying to prepare for exams. You should also make sure to go

through previous exams you’ve done so as to not repeat past mis-

takes. Away from books you need to make sure to be getting

enough rest so as not to sleep during your test. “Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven’t planted.” –

IMPORTANCE OF ASSESSMENT IN ACADEMIC LIFE

End of Term examinations is part of a very important assessment

that determines whether or not the goals of our education are be-

ing met. Assessments are critical to the education process. They

develop students' ability to evaluate themselves to make judg-

ments about their own performance and improve upon it. The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet. Aristotle

END OF TERM TWO EXAMINATIONS YEAR 9

In the End of Term Examinations, we were challenged like never before!

There was a lot of preparations that went into it. Seeing as we are doing

our checkpoint in Early April. To the most we know that they were testing

our attentiveness and our level of thinking as we prepare on what hap-

pens as we move on to a higher level. Overall we have finished the End

of term Examinations and now we need to focus and prepare for the

upcoming Checkpoint Examinations. Jasmine Kibati – Y9

In order to excel in academics, one needs to prepare well. For the

End of Term examinations, personally, I had to set a target grade for

each subject. If you are to excel, you have to consult your specific

subject tutors for areas that you are struggling in. You have to know

your minimum target grades (MTG) and work towards them. There is

no secret to passing exams, it comes through hard work and prepa-

ration. “Education is not just the learning of facts but is of the training of the mind

to think” – Albert Einstein Kimuchu Kibue and Darrel Loyd – Y10

EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMICS

END OF TERM TWO EXAMINATIONS IN YEAR 10

This week we have done our End of Term Examinations. They help us

see our progress throughout the term/ year. They help us see how

much more we have to improve to reach our goals/targets. They help

teachers in knowing what topic areas to cover and where you need

help. As Mark Twain once said “Continuous improvement is better than de-

layed perfection.” Nicole Makau – Y10

WHAT WENT WELL WITH THE END OF TERM EXAMINATIONS

This week we have done our End of Term Examinations. In our exami-

nation we were given a set amount of time for each subject. I felt

the timings were just enough for me to finish my exam and still have

time to check through it. We also did revision before the End of Term

examinations with our subject teachers which I feel really worked in

our advantage when it came to the exams. ‘The secret to getting

ahead is getting started’- unknown Shantelle Phillips – Y9

IN PREPARATION FOR CHECKPOINT

This week we have done our End of Term Examinations. These were

to test our ability to understand what we have been learning so far

through the term. They have been challenging, but very helpful.

Without, we would barely know how far we are pushing ourselves.

Right now, in Year 9, all our subjects are being tested, to give us a

wider choice in our future. The CIE Checkpoint Examinations will be

done on April 10th and 11th, ushering in our transition to KS4.

On Wednesday, 29th March 2017,

we had a fruitful Parent-teacher

Consultation evening for Year 12

and Year 13 students. The candi-

dates, together with their tutors and

parents discussed their level of

preparation for the examinations,

and charted strategies of how best

to utilize the time that’s left. This

was the ultimate such meeting for

the Year 13’s as tutors grabbed a

final opportunity to throw in a word

of counsel and wisdom to the can-

didates, who are nearly graduating

and going into university.

It was a smashing success involving all students who were

divided into the Junior Category, the Intermediate Category

and the Senior Category. Each class was granted an equal op-

portunity to show-case their athletic prowess in cycling which

was our first event followed by swimming and last but not least

the running which I found to be the most challenging of all. Stu-

dents were also to come up with a class costume that was be-

ing judged and came up with different team names that were

quite interesting. The aim of the event was to challenge students

from a sporting perspective and sensitize students on the im-

portance of team work and reliability. We are grateful to all par-

ents who helped support this event and we sincerely thank you

for continually supporting the Year 13 Community Service initia-

tive all throughout our events.

“The role play exercise at ISS Shipping was an enjoyable learning experi-

ence for me and my classmates. I was able to learn how to conduct in-

terviews from the questions to be asked while interviewing a candidate

to how candidates should behave during an interview. One thing that

stood out for me are the laws that govern how companies carryout re-

cruitment and selection. It is now clear to me that as an aspiring entre-

preneur, I should not discriminate against any potential candidates

when conducting this process.” Annalisa Gaitirira

BTEC Students’ Role Play Interviews at ISS Shipping

On the 27th and 28th of March 2017 our BTEC students went to ISS Shipping for an academic visit. They were

expected to participate in a role play in a unit (Subject) called Recruitment and Selection. BTEC is a voca-

tional programme that not is only designed to shape the future of learners but also equip them with trans-

ferable skills fit for the job market.

It is the aim of the entire faculty that we uphold the spirit of delivering this programme in a practical and

engaging manner. This is an exercise that was conducted for two days where on the first day students

were interviewed by the Human Resource Manager. They were given feedback on their performance and

were enlightened on the relevance of carrying out due diligence when conducting recruitment and se-

lection in business. The programme was conducted in a practical

way where the students experienced the way in which recruitment

and selection process ought to be done. On the second day, stu-

dents were given a chance to perform a role of interviewers. Mr

Mugo, the Human Resource Manager guided them on how to con-

duct an interview as an interview especially as an entrepreneur

who is seeking to recruit new employees. His feedback to our stu-

dents was prompt and formative because the students were cor-

rected as they performed this role play. Mr. Felix Tanui

“Overall my experience at ISS Ship-

ping Company was very insightful. I

learnt a lot that I didn’t know. After

the whole experience I can confi-

dently walk into an interview with

an idea of how to respond to ques-

tions”

Brenda Kagendo Eddy Ratemo

“I learnt a lot during this experience. It inspired me to pursue my

dream of becoming an entrepreneur. By sitting on the position of

an interviewee and an interviewer, I was able to know what is re-

quired in each of these positions. The experience has also taught

me how to write important documents

that can be used in a recruitment and

selection process, such as CV, Appli-

cation Letter, Job Advert and an Ap-

plication Form for future references.

This experience will go a long way in

preparing me for future endeavours in

the business environment” Ashley Kioko
