WWW is a repository of information spread all over the world and linked together.
WWW project was initiated by CERN(European Laboratory for Particle Physics) to create a system to handle distributed resources necessary for scientific research.

WWW is a distributed client-server service, in which a client using a browser can access a service using a server

Hypertext-information is stored in a set of documents that are linked using the concept of pointers◦ An item can be associated with another document
by a pointer◦ Hypertext documents contain text only and
hypermedia documents can contain pictures, graphics and sound
◦ Unit of hypertext and hypermedia on the web is called a page
◦ The main page of an organization is known as homepage

Each browser usually consists of three parts A controller Client programs(can be one HTTP,FTP,SMTP) Interpreters(HTML) Controller receives input from the keyboard
or the mouse and uses client programs to access the document
After the document has been accessed, controller use one of the interpreters to display the documents on the screen

Static documents(are fixed content documents that are created and stored in a server)
Dynamic documents(is created by the web server whenever a browser requests the document)
Limani Bhavik & Surani Saunak (Imperial Infosys) 6
It is a technology that creates and handles dynamic documents
It is a set of standards that define how a dynamic document should be written, how input data should be supplied to the program, how the output result should be used

It is used to access data on the WWW The protocol transfers data in the form of
plain text, hypetext, audio, video and so on HTTP uses the services of TCP on well
known port 80 Client initializes the transaction by sending
a request message Server replies by sending a response
Limani Bhavik & Surani Saunak (Imperial Infosys) 8
Request message consist of a request line, header and body
Request line defines request type,URL,HTTP version
URL is standard for specifying information on the internet. It defines four things:method, host computer, port, path
Method://Host:port/path
