ISR 83: The Crusades Name/Date/Period EQ: What were the Crusades?

The Byzantine emperor asked the pope for help fighting against the Seljuk Turks

In 1071, the new leaders of the Islamic Empire, the Seljuk Turks stopped allowing Christians access to the Holy Land, and threatened to take over the Byzantine Empire and Constantinople.

In 1095, Pope Urban II declared that European Christians unite and capture the Holy Land from the Muslims. This began the Crusades.

The Crusades were a series of wars by Christian kingdoms from Europe intending to stop the expansion of Islamic nations and reclaim Muslim-controlled lands that were considered holy by Christians. Four major wars took place from 1095 to 1212.

1st

Crusade

French and Norman (English) knights attacked Jerusalem and surrounding “Holy Land” in 1099

The Christian Crusaders were victorious; they massacred thousands of Muslims and Jews living within Jerusalem
