monastery

Located at the bottom of Mount Big Hăşmaş , at an altitude of 950m , on the road between Miercurea Ciuc and Gheorghieni, the monastery has as dedication day The Repose of the Holy Mother. Austere on the outside, with gray medieval fortress walls , hides between them a white church ,sitting in the grass like a bride dressed in a Romanian wedding. Mures Spring Monastery’s construction began in 1996 and was completed in 2000, being the soul project of IPS John Selejean, archbishop of Covasna and Harghita . Built on a plot called " Priest’s Place", the monastic complex includes: a Brancovenian styled church , the body of sanctums with chapel, confessor’s house ,the bell and other household anexes. Interestly is that the respective place was subject to a previous monastery project in 1963, which was abandonned due to Transilvania being occupied and then due to the instauration of the cummunist regime. IPS Ioan Selejean’s project meant to be an ortodoxism oasis for Romanians that didn’t have any churches in that zone. The church is populated by 25 nuns belonging to all corners of the country and in it resides a part of Saint Nicolae’s relics. The painting inside the churh is neobizantine in style and has reproductions of the saints painted in churches on Mount Athos. The iconostasis is manually sculpted with a specific Romanian style, from wild pale wood, which is extremely rare. During three of the four seasons,Mures Spring is a rather cold place. Due to this specific reason except for Sundays and important holidays, when the services are kept inside, monastic ordinances are hold in the chapel of Saint John the Baptizer’s church, which a fully fledged church in it’s own right. At Mures Spring monastery you have a big chance of meeting IPS Ioan Selejean, archbishop of Covasna and Harghita, the high prelate comming to spend most of his summers here, often hole days in order to pray and contemplate.
