Welcome to Pasach (Passover) 2011!This is a festive time for Jews all over the world.Indeed the Book of Exodus calls Passover a “Feast”

So it’s a time of merriment and feasting although there are some serious parts of the service and you’ll see that as we go through.

• So, a few things I’d like you to notice before we begin.

• In front of each of you is a Passover Haggadah. Try and say that? “Haggadah”.

Every Pasach (Passover in Hebrew) Jews read from a Haggadah, it’s basically an order of service.

• It tells us what to do and when to do it.

• Show Chasidic Haggadah

• There’s literally thousands of various Haggadahs out there and many are a little different.

• But they all have certain elements that are the same.

• So as long as they have those elements, then they’re kosher for Passover use.

• Passover is done once a year. However I’ve done hundreds of these Seders (Services).

• How could that be? I’m not hundreds of years old.

• Well, my parents were missionaries to Israel I lived there for 19 years.

• Every year since I was 6 years old we’d come back to either the States or Europe and go from Church to Church demonstrating what a Passover is.

• So sometimes we’d end up doing 20 or so of these in a year.

• It’s a lot of fun and people really enjoy them.

• Now there’s lots of different organizations out there that demonstrate Passovers but what’s different about ours is we do it the way it’s done in Israel.

• You also have a few other items in front of you and as we go through the Seder (Service) we’ll be explaining them to you.• Try not to eat anything before it’s time, especially the white stuff on your plate.

• One other thing I want to show you before we start is the Passover Plate.

• We have one here at the head table. Usually every Jewish family has one that looks something like this.

• They can look a little different though.

• Different styles etc.

• After the service, feel free to come up and look at the Judaica (Jewish items) we have up here.

• Also it’s traditional for some to wear white clothing. That’s why you see my wife and I dressed in white.

• This serves to remind us of the white garments that the Kohen HaGadol would wear when he entered the Holy of Holies while serving in the Bet haMikdash.

• Passover Seders can be done at home with family and close friends.

• Or It can be done like this with a congregation.

• There will be times during this Seder that all the men here will say some things in unison

• And there will be times that the women will all say things in unison.

• It will all be up here on the screen.

• After we do the actual Passover Seder I’ll then explain how some of these things relate to the New Testament and the “Last Supper”.

Egypt.

(The Leader, at the head table, will hold up the shank-bone of a lamb and the matzah tosh with three matzos in it.)

This is matzah (hold up matzah) and this is a matzah tosh (hold up matzah tosh). A matzah tosh has 3 compartments.

It is the custom to break the middle matzah in two parts, the smaller part is returned to the plate and the larger piece (called the afikomen) is wrapped with three layers of linen cloth.

Then the leader of the Seder hides it.

After the meal the youngest member at the table will search for the afikomen.He will bring it back to the table and receive a reward (depending on how young they are). The two parts will be matched together and it will be a sign. “That which is broken off will not remain lost to our people.”

The Leader will now hold up the matzah

tosh with the matzos in it. Everyone will

now say in unison……

This is the bread of affliction that we and

our fathers ate in the land of Egypt. Let

all who are hungered, come and eat.

Whosoever is in need, come and celebrate

Mah Neesh-tah-nah?The Four Questions

Leader:

Even the youngest notices this flat bread used in the Seder, the matzah. It is unleavened bread. Now let the youngest lead in asking the first of the four questions.

Lady leader:

Because the L-RD commanded us to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread, forever.

Leader:

Because the Egyptians made bitter the lives of our fathers. The Torah tells us in the Book of Exodus: “And they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in bricks.” Exodus 1:14

Lady Leader:

First, to remember the tears our people shed as slaves in Egypt. Second, to remember the hyssop which was used to sprinkle the blood of the Passover Lamb on our door posts.

Leader:

Then we were slaves getting ready to leave Egypt. Now we are free and again we have our own land.

The leader holds up the shankboneLeader:We can no longer bring offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem. This bone reminds us of the Passover Lamb that the L-RD our G-D commanded our fathers to sacrifice this night and mark the door posts with its blood…

The LORD passed over all homes with the blood on the door posts. In those homes NOT marked with the blood, the firstborn of each household was slain.

About forty years later, while leading his flock, he came upon a bush that was burning, Yet, this bush did not burn up!! He walked over to investigate and THE L-RD spoke to him from the bush. Let us remember and never forget. The promise

of G-D to deliver our people has been kept again

and again and again, throughout all the ages.

In every generation each individual is bound to

consider himself as if he had gone forth out of

Egypt. For it is written: “On that day thou shalt

tell thy son: This is because of what the L-RD

did for ME when I came out of Egypt” (Exodus

13:8)

At this point I’m going to deviate from the way the modern Passover is done and I’m going to do something that was done at Passover’s in the First Century.In the First Century, one would honor someone at the feast by handing them a matzah that has the Chawroeset on it.Today I’d like to honor…

Let each one scoop up the Haw-roe-set, using the Matzah as a spoon, and then place a bit of Maw-roar (bitter herbs) on it. Continue using the Matzah as a spoon until all is gone.

Now we eat the Passover meal!

Tzaw-foon

The youngest now searches for the Afikomen.

It is brought back to the leader and it is carefully

unwrapped from the linen cloth and matched up with the

part from which it was broken off.

(The leader matches up the two parts and holds them

up.)

That which was lost has now been found and that which

was broken has now been restored Omain!

This concludes the actual Passover Seder.Now I’ll explain some things that relate the Passover to the New Testament.

First we saw that the opening of the Seder was brought in by the lady leader.

It's the same with the Shabbat (Sabbath).

It’s the woman who brings in the Sabbath every week as well.

Jewish women in Biblical times have always been held in high regard and respected.

In spite of how the Bible translations portray them.

You would also notice that the lady leader (usually the wife) is seated on the left of the leader of the Seder.

That position is the most important position (other then the one leading the seder) at the table. This is where Peter sat at the L-rd’s last Passover (often called the Last Supper).

There was a dispute about who should sit there in Luke 22:24 this led into Yeshua (Jesus) talking about who would be “the greatest and least in Heaven”.

The “Last Supper” was a Passover Seder. The youngest would sit at the right hand of the leader. This would've been John the Beloved.

Why did we all lean to the left when we drank our wine?

We do that in remembrance of the days of old when we didn't sit on chairs but rather we laid down on mats eating from a table (one with very short legs)

the mats would shoot out from the center of the table like spokes on a wheel.

It wasn't like Michael Angelo's depiction of the Last Supper where they were all sitting on chairs.

While reclining on these mats they would be leaning on their left side and eating with their right hand.

So in the case of the Yeshua’s last Passover He would've had His back towards Peter and John the Beloved would've been in front.

If John were to ask a question, he would have to lean backwards to be able to have Yeshua hear him.

Leaning back like that would put his head on Yeshua's chest. In John 13:4 Yeshua had just washed the disciple’s feet at verse 21 it says…

21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.

25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I

have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

What does it mean Jesus dipped the sop? He was dipping the Chawroeset. Just like we all did tonight and then Jesus handed it to the one He was honoring… just like I did when I honored Teresa.

Right up to the end, Yeshua was giving Judas a chance. Even though He knew Judas would betray Him, He still honored him.

You can see how important it is to understand Judaism and the culture of First Century Israel when interpreting Scripture.

Without knowledge of Jewish custom, you can't have a really good understanding of Scripture.

Next we'll look at the drinking of the wine.

Luke 22:20 "Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you."

This is what we call in Church "Communion"

This is the cup after the meal the third cup. What was that 3rd cup called? "The cup of Redemption". He said this cup was his blood.

It was His blood that redeemed us. He never did drink the fourth cup, that is the cup that he will drink with all of us when He comes back, just like He said. Mathew 26: 29

But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.

Then he broke bread. He broke the matza and said, "this is my body which I have given for you" You'll notice we took out the middle matza and we broke it.

This part of the Seder is very important to believers it tells the entire story of the death and resurrection of Yeshua. There are 3 matzahs just as there is a triune G-d G-d the father, Son and Holy Spirit. Yeshua took out the middle matzah which represents Himself.

He broke it just as He was broken for us.

It is wrapped in linen just as Yeshua's body was wrapped in linen before He was laid in the tomb.

He was in the tomb for 3 days just as the afikomen is wrapped 3 times.

Then later it is brought out just as Yeshua was brought out from the grave.

Some Jewish traditions will even hide the afikomen under a pillow called “the stone”. Just as Yeshua was hidden away behind the stone at His tomb.

The whole story is there in black and white.

Do you remember when I held up the matzah and it was said that all was lost but had now been found. That which had been broken had now been restored.

That’s exactly what Yeshua did for us when He came to be born on earth. He restored His Gospel.

If you take a close look at the matza you will see that it is striped, just as He was striped for our healing and it is also pierced just as He was pierced for our transgressions.

Our people do this every year and they don't realize what they're doing.

There are Sephardim Haggadahs that say the 3 matzahs represent the thinking, the word and the action.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

This is exactly how the Triune G-d operates!

The Father is the originator of all things.

Yeshua is the Word of G-d and the Holy Spirit is the action part of the G-d head.

Next we see where the door is opened for Elijah the Prophet. We read in Mal 4:5

"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the L-RD"

It was Yochanon the Immerser also known as John the Baptist who came in the spirit of Elijah.

The spirit of Elijah rested on John the Baptist just as Elijah's spirit had rested on Elisha in 2Ki 2:15 where it says…

"And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha.

When we hold up the shank bone of a lamb we remember the sacrifice at the Temple. Yeshua was our sacrifice.

Over and over again in Scripture He is in fact called the Passover Lamb.

Why do we eat unleavened bread?

That was because when Moses was delivering the Israelites out of Egypt, they were in a hurry.

They left quickly and didn't have time to allow the bread to rise. Leaven in the Bible at times also represents sin.

Galatians 5:9 Paul said, "A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump." what he was saying was that a little sin is like a little leaven… it doesn't take much.

Likewise, a little sin is all it takes to pollute the entire soul. So we don't want any sin in the house.

Also, Paul writes in I Corinthians 5:8

"Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth"

As it says there, Paul kept this feast.

It’s important that we understand that we’re commanded to keep this feast. In Exodus

13:6 it says,

Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the L-RD.

7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.

Often times today in our modern society, the Feasts including Passover are called the feasts of Israel or the Feasts of the Jews. But the Bible never says that, not even once. What it does say is this…

Leviticus 23:4These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.

Leviticus 23:44And Moses declared unto the children of Israel the feasts of the LORD.

At other times the Scripture says “these are my feasts saith the L-rd

These aren’t Jewish feasts at all. They’re the feasts for everyone who Loves G-d.

Another thing that many don't realize is that some of the most important things that Yeshua said was said during the Passover Seder. It was then in John 14:6

that He said I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Then down just a few more verses He says in verse 15

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

And that’s what we’re doing tonight, we’re keeping the commandment to remember Him. He said, “This do in remembrance of Me.”

Also notice in the Seder that there was a time when we were to sing some songs.

Just before Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mt. of Olives in Mathew 26:30 while still at the last Passover supper it says,

"And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the Mount of Olives." So this is a tradition which has some very old roots.

And traditions aren’t a bad thing. Paul said · 2 Thessalonians 2:15

Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

There are many other things here I can point out concerning the Passover but it would take longer then just today. But I do hope you enjoyed celebrating Passover with us
