The German Railway Industry Association

The German Railway Industry Association (VDB) is the industrial association of the

railway equipment manufacturers in Germany.

It represents the interests of more than 170 member companies – many of them are

worldwide leading system integrators and highly specialized small and medium sized

suppliers (SME’s).

The VDB members develop and manufacture systems and components for rail vehicles

and their infrastructure. In addition to that they offer a broad range of services for the

railway engineering.

The VDB is organized in 19 working and topical committees.

The LL-brake pads: A milestone in the fight against railway noise

Noise can affect the public acceptance of rail freight traffic

potential barrier for growth in rail freight traffic

Since 2007 approximately 20,000 new freight wagons have been

equipped with low-noise K-brake pads but…

… in Europe there are still about 300,000 wagons equipped with noise

causing cast-iron brake pads; about 180,000 in Germany alone

LL-brake pads were authorized in June 2013 after decades of

development and regulatory work 1:1 exchange of cast-iron pads

against LL-brake pads is possible!

Finally, an important requirement for noise reduction of the existing fleet

and its braking system is fulfilled. And possible without expensive

remodeling.

Diesel locomotive with an electric power unit

consists of:

Battery

Diesel generator

Electric engine

Mechanical gear

Selected railway innovations: Hybrid-locomotive

source: Alstom

Ecological and economic advantages:

(compared to traditional Diesel-hydraulic power units)

No idle operation of the Diesel power unit, saving up to 40% of fuel and CO2

Up to 60% particles and up to 40% less nitrogen oxides emissions

Reduction of noise exposure by 15 dB during electrical operation

LCC-reduction up to 30%

Page 21: Www.bahnindustrie.info The contribution of the rail industry for the development of rail freight transport Axel Schuppe German Railway Industry Association

Selected railway innovations: Recovery of previously unused energy to increase energy efficiency

60% of the energy stored in fuel escapes in the form of unused

waste heat

Integration of a heat pump into exhaust system:

Through the hydraulic-coupling a part of the heat is converted

into useful torque and is returned to the driveline

Alternatively, the generator can be used to provide additional

components with power (e.g. auxiliary drive or comfort drive)

Ecological and economic advantages:

Significant reduction in fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions;

Potential savings between 5 and 12% depending on the operational profile

Alternatively the engine power can be raised without increase of fuel consumption

The German railway industry: The worldwide leading innovator

The German railway industry is the worldwide market and technology leader.

Every boy knows that a Porsche accelerates within 17 seconds from 0 to 200 km/h.

What he does not know is: A modern high-performance locomotive with a power

of 7,000 kW can do the same!
