Good Morning…

The Beatles - There’s A Place – Please Please Me(McCartney-Lennon)

Lead vocal: John and PaulOne of many songs that were written in the front room of Paul McCartney’s Forthlin Road home. John and Paul were so excited about this newly written song that as they entered the EMI studios on February 11, 1963, to record

their first album it was their priority to record this song first. After ten takes they moved on to something else and revisited it later in the day. Often

referred to by American Beatles fans as one of the few “lost Beatles songs,” “There’s A Place” was in print in the U.S. only on the Vee-Jay LP

The Beatles - Do You Want To Know A Secret – Please Please Me

(McCartney-Lennon)Lead vocal: George

Recorded February 11, 1963. Written primarily by John Lennon for George Harrison to sing. The song was given to another Brian Epstein-managed act, Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas, to cover. Their version topped the British

charts in late spring 1963. Inspired by "I'm Wishing," a song from Walt Disney’s 1937 animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” that

Lennon’s mother used to sing to him when he was a child. On U.S. albums:

overdub. Starting in 1965 this was the new way they would record. Previously, every edit piece or overdub would have been numbered. Now

they just recorded until they got it right and placed that on top of a numbered take, the ”best” rhythm track. Written primarily by John Lennon.

The Beatles - And I Love Her - A Hard Day’s Night(Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: PaulWritten mainly by Paul with the middle eight by John it was released as a single in the U.S. reaching #12. Recorded initially as a heavier, up-tempo

number on February 25, 1964, The Beatles attempted two takes and moved on to something else. On February 26 they struggled with the simpler, now

acoustic arrangement through 12 more takes and Ringo swapping his drums for congas, ultimately leaving it to be re-made the next day. Finally, on

February 27, they had the arrangement to their liking and perfected the song in two completed takes (takes 20 and 21).

The Beatles - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - Rubber Soul

(Lennon-McCartney)Lead vocal: John

Originally recorded on October 12, 1965, The Beatles decided to scrap this version and re-record the song nine days later, on October 21. George Harrison provides the sitar, the first appearance of the instrument on a

Beatles recording, though the sitar can be heard in the instrumental introduction on the American version of “Help!” Written mainly by John with some lyrical assistance from Paul. John: “I was trying to write about an affair

without letting me wife know… so it was very gobbledegook. I was sort of writing from my experiences, girls’ flats.” Paul has said that the ending lyrics, “so I lit a fire,” refer to the house being burned down in an act of revenge by

the spurned lover. Bob Dylan did a slight parody of the song on his 1966 album, Blonde on Blonde. Check out the song “4th Time Around.”

Lead vocal: JohnRecorded in six takes on June 15, 1965. The first Beatles song to include a

Lead vocal: PaulWritten by Paul at the Asher family home on Wimpole Street. Paul had the

tune prior to coming up with the lyrics and originally named the song “Auntie Gin’s Theme” because his aunt liked it. George Martin’s instrumental “Help!” album includes an orchestrated version of “I’ve Just Seen A Face” using the title “Auntie Gin’s Theme.” Recorded in six takes at the same June 14, 1965 McCartney-dominated session that produced “Yesterday” and “I’m Down.” One of only five Beatles songs Paul chose to perform live on his Wings Over

grabbed the unfinished song, threw on some overdubs and decreed it finished. Specifically, they added a tone pedal guitar, tambourine, maracas,

and more vocals on November 11, 1965, the final day of recording for “Rubber Soul.”On U.S. album:

written equally by John and Paul in the basement music room in Richard and Margaret Asher’s house at 57 Wimpole Street in the west end of London in September 1963. Paul had been dating the couple’s daughter, actress Jane

Asher, and was spending a lot of time at the Asher home whenever he was in London. Paul would eventually accept an invitation to move in, taking up

residence in their attic.

The Beatles - All Together Now - Yellow Submarine(Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: PaulIn May 1967, with the “Sgt. Pepper” album in the can and awaiting release,

the Beatles went to work on two projects at the same time. They began recording the title track for “Magical Mystery Tour” and also starting to record

the new songs they had promised for the “Yellow Submarine” film.

The Beatles - Hey Bulldog - Yellow Submarine(Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: JohnIn early February 1968, the Beatles were on a tight schedule. They had two

weeks to audition and record possible songs for their next single, which

would be released while they were away on an extended trip to India where the group would meditate with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In addition to picking the single sides they would need to spend a day with a film crew making a

short promotional film for the song

The Beatles - It’s All Too Much - Yellow Submarine(Harrison)

Lead vocal: GeorgeRecording began with the working title “Too Much” at De Lane Lea Music

Recording Studios, the basement studio of an office building directly opposite the Holborn Underground station in London. On May 25, 1967, one week

before the release of the “Sgt. Pepper” album, the band ran through numerous rehearsals and recorded four proper takes of the backing track.

The instruments were George on Hammond organ, Paul on bass guitar, John on lead guitar (including the soaring feedback at the beginning of the song)

and Ringo on drums. Overdubs were added the next day at De Lane Lea: George’s lead vocal, John and Paul’s backing vocal, handclaps and

percussion, including cowbell, woodblock and tambourine.

The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - Revolver / Yellow Submarine

(Lennon-McCartney)Lead vocal: Ringo

The Beatles’ thirteenth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label. One of the Beatles’ most innovative creations to date (1966), a children’s

sing-along, was written mostly by Paul with assistance from John for Ringo’s vocal contribution to the “Revolver” album. The track was later used as the

title song of the group’s animated film project, which was released in 1968 in the UK. Pop singer Donovan helped Paul with the lyrics, coming up with the

memorable line, “Sky of blue, sea of green.” Although at the time of its release it was rumored to be about drugs, McCartney denied this, saying, “I

four takes on May 26, 1966.

The Beatles - In My Life - Rubber Soul(Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocals: John with PaulRecorded October 18, 1965 and written primarily by John, who called it his “first real major piece of work.” Of all the Lennon-McCartney collaborations only two songs have really been disputed by John and Paul themselves --

“Eleanor Rigby” and “In My Life.” Both agree that the lyrics are 100% Lennon, but John says Paul helped on the musical bridge, while Paul recalls writing the

entire melody on John’s Mellotron. The gorgeous piano solo is provided by George Martin. To give his solo a harpsichord sound the producer played the

piano at half speed and an octave lower so that when played at regular speed it would be in the correct key for the song.

The Beatles - All You Need Is Love – Yellow Submarine(Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: JohnThe Beatles’ fifteenth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label.Written by John Lennon especially for the first-ever worldwide television

transmission. The epic event, a 6-hour program entitled “Our World,” featured segments linking 24 countries in five continents via satellite, with a potential of 400 million viewers. The Beatles were honored to be invited to

represent Great Britain in the program. For the event, they would premiere a brand new song written just for the occasion. John Lennon’s “All You Need Is

Love” became the anthem of 1967, the summer of love. To decrease the chances of an on-air foul-up, George Martin had the Beatles play to their own

pre-recorded rhythm track. Only the vocals, bass guitar, lead guitar solo in

The Beatles - Dig A Pony - Let It Be(Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: JohnRecorded live on the rooftop of the Apple headquarters building, 3 Savile

Row, on January 30, 1969. In re-producing the tapes for the “Let It Be” album, Phil Spector edited out the opening and closing line of the song (“All I want is

…”) which can be heard on the “Anthology 3” album and in the film “Let It Be.” The idea to go on the rooftop and play live in front of a few people was conceived by Paul on January 26. From a technical standpoint, this simple

request to perform on the rooftop was a gigantic headache for the film crew and the Apple/EMI sound engineers. In addition to accommodating the space required for five film cameras, and various sound equipment which needed

electricity to run, there was also the issue of the cold temperature – the temperature would be in the mid-40s and windy when the beatles performed.

In a few cases, sound engineers wrapped ladies’ stockings around microphones to camouflage the sound of the wind blowing against them. John

and George wore heavy coats and Ringo wore his wife’s raincoat in a futile attempt to stay warm. Throughout the 42-minute rooftop set John can be

seen rubbing his hands together in between songs to keep warm.

John Lennon – Gimme Me Some Truth – Imagine ‘71

This was also composed in the Spring of ’68 in India. It was also “rehearsed” during the Get Back sessions. The song had contemporary lyrical additions, in reference to “Tricky Dicky” (Richard Nixon) and a

desire for such people to give John the truth.

The Beatles - Baby, You’re A Rich Man - Non-LP track(Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: JohnThe Beatles’ fifteenth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label. The Beatles were contractually obligated to deliver four new songs for

inclusion in the “Yellow Submarine” animated film project. “Baby, You’re A Rich Man” was the first song recorded especially for that project. Earlier in

the year, George Harrison’s initial offering for the “Sgt. Pepper” album, “Only A Northern Song,” had been rejected for that album and was now being

earmarked for use in the “Yellow Submarine” animated film. But with the rush-release of “All You Need Is Love” as a single following the “Our World”

world television transmission on June 25, 1967, a B-side was needed. George Martin chose “Baby, You’re A Rich Man,” effectively removing it from

consideration for the “Yellow Submarine” feature film. On U.S. album:

The Beatles - Because - Abbey Road(Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: John, Paul and GeorgeThe group recorded 23 takes on August 1, 1969, with George Martin on a

Baldwin spinet electric harpsichord matching note with John on his Epiphone Casino electric guitar and Paul on his Rickenbacker bass guitar. For the

backing track Ringo kept the beat gently tapping out a beat on the hi-hat. This was for the musician’s headphones and was not recorded on the tape.

Take 16 was deemed the best backing track and John, Paul, and George added their lush harmonies to it. On August 4, the three recorded their vocals two more times, adding to the already thick layers of harmony. Lennon was inspired the write the song when he hear Yoko playing Beethoven’s piano

sonata in C Sharp minor, opus 27 number two (aka “The Moonlight Sonata”). He asked her to play the chords backwards and wrote “Because” around that reversed chord sequence. The gorgeous three-part harmonies of “Because”

are showcased on an a cappella mix of the song on the “Anthology 3” album.

The Beatles - You Never Give Me Your Money - Abbey Road

(Lennon-McCartney)Lead vocal: Paul

The famous “Abbey Road” medley begins with Paul’s “You Never Give Me Your Money,” a song which itself consists of three segments. In Barry Miles’

“Many Years From Now,” McCartney states that the first part of the song was him “directly lambasting Allen Klein’s attitude to us: no money, just funny

paper, all promises and it never works out. It’s basically a song about no faith in the person.” The reference to “funny paper” was the numerous bank

statements and other official looking documents that claimed they had stocks and bonds or money in various bank accounts, but to the band members it

always seemed imaginary; they were rich on paper.

George took his inspiration for his fourth song on the “White Album” from a box of chocolates, specifically a Mackintosh’s Good News double centre

chocolate assortment box, said by George to be Eric Clapton’s favorite brand. Most of the candies mentioned by George in the song came from the specific candies found in the box. Confections such as Creme Tangerine, Montelimart, Ginger Sling, Coffee Dessert and Savoy Truffle were part of the assortment.

Cool Cherry Cream and Coconut Fudge were Harrison creations. When George sings “But you’ll have to have them all pulled out after the Savoy

Truffle,” it is a warning to his friend Eric Clapton that he will have to have his decaying teeth pulled out. After some rehearsal, the backing track was

recorded in one take on October 3, 1968, at Trident Studios. With George playing electric piano, Paul on Rickenbacker bass, John on Epiphone Casino

electric guitar and Ringo on drums.

George Harrison – Don’t Let Me Wait Too Long - Living In The Material World ‘73

This track was the single that should have been, almost was, but never appeared. This is a prime piece of pop songwriting, and was scheduled as the second single from the LP for release on September 24th, 1973.

It was assigned an Apple catalog number (Apple 1866), but was mysteriously cancelled at the last minute.

The Beatles - I Need You - Help!(Harrison)

Lead vocal: GeorgeRecorded in five takes on February 15, 1965, the first day of recording for what was to become the “Help!” album, with overdubs completed the next day. It is the second original George Harrison song to be recorded by the Beatles. Harrison wrote “I Need You” for his future wife, Pattie Boyd. The

track is notable for the first use on a Beatles record of what is now known as a “wah-wah pedal.” George achieved this by playing his 12-string

Rickenbacker through a foot-controlled volume pedal. Ringo provides cowbell percussion.

Road in London when passing in a taxi were Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Paul McCartney: “They shouted from the taxi and we yelled, ‘Hey, hey, give

us a lift, give us a lift,’ and we bummed a lift off them. So there were the four of us sitting in a taxi and I think Mick said, ‘Hey we’re recording. Got any

songs?’ And we said, ‘Aaaah, yes, sure, we got one. How about Ringo’s song? You could do it as a single.’” John and Paul were invited to the Rolling Stones’ rehearsal to audition their new, but still unfinished song. There Lennon told them, “If you guys really like the main part of the song, we’ll finish it for you right now,” and within minutes, they returned with the song finished on the

spot. The Rolling Stones recorded the song and it became their first big British hit, peaking at number 12. The Beatles recorded their version of “I Wanna Be Your Man” the next day, September 11, 1963. The Hammond

organ heard faintly in the mix is played by George Martin. On U.S. album:

The Beatles - Good Morning Good Morning - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

(Lennon-McCartney)Lead vocal: John

Based on a Kellogg’s Cornflakes television commercial John heard while sitting at the piano and feeling a bit “stuck” trying to write something for

“Sgt. Pepper.” Paul plays a stinging guitar solo and flourishes with his right-handed Fender Esquire. The basic rhythm track was recorded on February 8, 1967 in eight takes, four of them complete. Overdubs followed with John’s

lead vocal and Paul’s bass added on February 16. A horn section consisting of members of the Brian Epstein-managed band Sounds Inc. (previously Sounds

The Beatles - All My Loving – With The Beatles(Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: PaulEssentially a Paul McCartney solo composition. The first song performed on

the live broadcast of “The Ed Sullivan Show” on February 9, 1964, and watched by a then-record 72 million viewers. McCartney has said it was the first song he ever wrote where he had the words before the music. Recorded in 13 takes on July 30, 1963. “All My Loving” is the most commercial Lennon-McCartney song recorded by The Beatles in 1963 that was not released as a

single in the UK or U.S.On U.S. album:

Another track that was written and rehearsed during the “Let It Be” sessions, it was considered sub-par and never considered for a Beatles album. The wait did the song wonders, as George brought it back and gave it a thorough shine. The song was also inspired by The Band’s

song, “The Weight.”

The Beatles - Rocky Raccoon - The Beatles(Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: PaulAnother of Paul McCartney story songs, this one is a country song in which

McCartney tackles an American southern accent. The song was recorded in a single session held on August 15, 1968, in which lyrics were being written and rejected between takes. The rhythm track was perfected in nine takes

and features Paul on vocal and acoustic guitar, John on harmonica and Fender Bass VI (a six-string bass guitar) and Ringo on drums. George Martin plays the piano solos in the middle and end instrumental breaks, which were

recorded on the Challen “jangle box” piano with the tape running at half-

speed. When played back at the proper speed, the piano had a rollicking honky-tonk sound. Paul overdubbed an additional bass line. As was the case with “Hey Jude,” Paul did not want George Harrison playing guitar fills on the

song, so George was sent to the control room. On the session tape it is George Harrison’s voice that announces “take one” instead of engineer Ken

Scott.

The Beatles - Two Of Us - Let It Be(Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocals: Paul and JohnA Paul McCartney solo composition originally entitled “On Our Way Home.”

Thought by many to be a song about John and Paul, "Two of Us" is actually a song written by Paul about himself and his soon-to-be wife, Linda Eastman. The lyrics are derived from various experiences where the two would get in the car with Paul's dog, Martha, and just drive in the countryside until they

were lost. One particular day, Linda parked the car and went for a walk with her camera and Paul sat in the car and wrote the basic tune for the song.

Paul introduced the song to the other Beatles during the January 1969 sessions in which the group was working up seven or eight new songs to

include in a one-hour concert television special. At this time, “On Our Way Home” was not the Everly Brothers-styled acoustic version heard on the

released album. Both John and producer Glyn Johns suggested to Paul that an acoustic arrangement might suit the song better, but McCartney was thinking

in terms of how it might play in the concert TV special, so he wanted a fast song
