    2 C2 SmartLab

C2 SmartLab is a first-of-its-kind "virtual lab" application that enables institutions to offer structuralengineering experiments at the click of a button. It comprises academically superior, industry-aligned experiments, and

thereby provides better placement opportunities for students.

The experiments offer detailed information and practical guidance, which help students gain thorough knowledge of even the

minute facts involved in fabricating and testing specimen.

    With C2 SmartLab, institutions can:

Leverage limited resources to offer the experiments

C2 SmartLab eliminates the need for individual test frames and other such resources, allowing students to perform

sixteen experiments, from fabrication/casting up to testing and observing results, right at a computer lab.

Control and monitor the way the experiments are assigned and accessed

Management can draw reports on the number of students who have been assigned the experiments, and the

number that is accessing them. This can help draw conclusions on the effectiveness and usefulness of theexperiments.

Considerably reduce time and repeated costs of physical experiments

Fabricating a specimen can involve considerable time and money. With C2 SmartLab, experiments can be

completed in very less time, and there are no costs involved.

Offer a safe environment for students to make mistakes and learn

Fabricating and testing an actual specimen involves risks. One mistake in handling the specimen could prove

costly (the entire experiment will have to be repeated) or fatal (the student may get injured). With C2 SmartLab,

students can safely make mistakes and learn, without having to worry about repeating the experiment or getting

    injured.

    Maintain competitive advantage

C2 SmartLab offers experiments that are instructionally sound and aligned closely with industry needs. Therefore,it projects the institution as a technology leader, and thereby maintain competitive advantage.

Do you provide updated technology and lab facilities?

Are you able to control and monitor students'

    access to experiments?

    With C2 SmartLab, faculty can:

Control and monitor access of the experiments

Faculty can easily control and monitor students access of the experiments. It lets faculty generate reports on:

The specific experiments accessed by students

    The extent of completion

The time they have spent on each experiment

Allow students to conduct experiments without having to be physically present Faculty needs to only assign the experiments to the students. After that, the step-by-step process of going

through the experiments can be conducted by the students independently, without intervention from the faculty.

Detailed reports on students' access of the experiments are available, allowing the faculty to monitor progress

    and provide guidance if necessary.

    With C2 SmartLab, students can:

    Practice any number of times

For engineering students, successful interpretation of a concept lies in applying classroom theory in the

laboratory. However, more often than not, many students find it difficult to cross that line because of limited

access to live experiments (probably due to shortage of equipment, faculty and/or resources). With C2

SmartLab, students can sit at the computer and "virtually" conduct any number of experiments, any number of

    times.

Be involved in the entire experiment

While performing physical experiments, the student may not be directly involved in key parts of the

fabrication/casting (like mixing concrete, compacting the specimen, etc.), and could hence lose valuable

learning. With C2 SmartLab, the student is involved in the entire experiment, from fabrication/casting to testing,

    and taking the readings.

    Make mistakes, safely

Errors while fabricating and testing a real specimen can prove costly, and sometimes even fatal. With C2

SmartLab, students have the opportunity to make mistakes in a safe environment while applying concepts.

Learn more from physical experimentsAfter going through the virtual experiments, students can take up and conduct one physical experiment. This

is because they have gone through the virtual experiments multiple times, which enables them to identify with

the steps involved in the actual experiment.

    Be industry ready

The experiments in C2 SmartLab are designed around the principle of learning by doing after extensive

consultations with leading experts from academia as well as industry. These experiments virtually lead

students through each step of the fabrication/casting and testing of various specimens. After going through

them, students get to understand not only the steps in the experiment, but also the nuances and practical

    aspects involved at each step.

    How C2 SmartLab Works

A faculty assigns the relevant experiments to students, who log in to access the experiments assigned.

When students access the experiment, they are given a problem statement such as Test an Under Reinforced Beam of

Dimension , based on which they will be provided the necessary tools to cast the beam, conduct the test, take linear

measurements, and observe the failure patterns.

For each experiment, an introduction is provided to set the expectations right at the beginning. The required dimensions of

the specimen to be fabricated and tested are also provided at this stage.

Once the student starts the experiment, each step is presented to the student wherein he/she is required to interact with

the system to perform the step.

The experiment proceeds when the student performs the step correctly. They are offered guidance and helpful feedback

throughout the tests, wherein at each step, a visual indicator tells students how they are doing in the test, along with

    detailed comments.

While a progress indicator tells students where they are in the experiment, a detailed glossary provides information on key

technical terms used. A help is also provided to guide the students on using the experiments.

The best part is C2 SmartLab can be used as an independent, self-running tool by students. That is, no faculty is required

to guide the students while they are going through the experiments.

A Sample Experiment - Axially Loaded Stub Column Testing - Double Angle - Steel

An example from our suite of about 16 experiments can help explain how C2 SmartLab employs technology to create a

    laboratory learning experience.

In this experiment, students are required to test a steel double angle column with the following specifications, and

record the load and deflection until failure:

    Overall dimension 470 mm

Two equal angles of dimensions 25 25 3 mm and length 400 mm

The angles are welded back to back using two 25 6 mm thick flats at equal given intervals

The ends of the angles are welded to machined loading plates of a finished dimension 75 75 12 mm, with

a machined groove on the reverse side to seat a hemisphere of radius 25 mm

The aim of the test is to allow students to:

Study the behaviour of the concentrically loaded steel column under controlled load

Observe the local buckling of the concentrically loaded steel column, from yield until failure

    Determine the maximum failure load
