1964) • LIFE: Although his parents were poor, they

managed to send him to school in Tampere. In 1908 he moved to Helsinki to study medicine. Here he met the painters Eero Järnefelt and Pekka Halonen, composer Jean Sibelius and author Juhavi Aho.

• In 1913 Sillanpää moved from Helsinki to his old home village and devoted himself to writing.

• The asteroid 1446 Sillanpää was named after him.

• WORK: He was awarded the Novel Prize in Literature in 1939 "for his deep understanding of his country's peasantry and the exquisite art with which he has portrayed their way of life and their relationship with Nature.“

• He won international fame for his novel Nuorena nukkunut (The Maid Silja/Fallen Asleep While Young) in 1931. Other novels are Virranpohjalta (1933), Ihmiset suviyössä (translated as People in the Summer Night) (1934), Viidestoista (1936), Elokuu (1941)

• born in the town of Vargata on Åland.. In 1930, she travelled to New York and found work as a domestic help. After marrying the Danish artist Johannes Dührkop in 1940, she settled in Denmark. Her motifs stem from her familiar world of the poor communities on Åland and the lives of emigrants.

• WORKS: She made her debut in 1936 with her depiction of an ordinary life, Katrina (Eng. tr. Katrina), which won first prize in a novel competition and became an international success. It overshadowed all her subsequent works.
