Where to start?!

• Apply for your student Oyster card to receive a discount when using public transport.

• NUS card (£11) doubles up as International student identity card www.nusextra.co.uk

• Consult the My Local Area guides on the King’s website.

• Find out what’s free and what’s cheap for students.

Transport

• Visit www.tfl.gov.uk and click ‘Get Oyster’. You’ll need your Enrolment ID, a photo to upload and £10.

• Never forget to pay your fare.

• Full time students are eligible for a Young Person’s Railcard, regardless of age.

• London Transport Museum (and shop!) in Covent Garden.

Health • You can find health information, including details of

local health services at www.nhs.uk• International students can use the National Health

Service (NHS) if here for more than 6 months in total.• You must register with a doctor, even if you are not ill.• The College Health Centre at the Strand is open to all

those in King’s halls and in nearby boroughs – check www.kcl.ac.uk/health for details.

• For serious illnesses and accidents, call 999 for an ambulance or visit an Accident and Emergency (A&E) hospital department.

London for Students • Students’ Union facilities, such as bars, club

nights and the gym, are usually cheaper than public facilities.

• Theatres often run student offers/last minute offers.

• Cinemas, restaurants, galleries and events often offer student discounts, so always check just in case.

Shopping• Large branches of major supermarkets are cheaper

than their smaller, local provision and than corner shops.

• Major supermarkets are ASDA, Morrisons, Tesco, the Co-Op, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. Lidl, Aldi and Iceland are discount supermarkets.

• For essentials like kettles, crockery or bedding try Argos.

• Markets are great for bargains, crafts and food. Time Out lists local London markets online.

Utilities and services• Use price comparison websites to shop around for good deals .

• Use Skype to make calls.

• Visit Carphone Warehouse or Phones4U for mobile deals.

• Open a UK bank account.
