So, in July 1772 the two ships sailed from Plymouth and four weeks later, they reached the Cape Verde Islands off the African coast. They stopped there for drinking water, bought live goats, pigs and hens for food and, lots of fruit to keep the crew healthy.

They hunted penguins and seals amongst the icebergs and saw huge whales out at sea.

But then, as they headed away from Tahiti towards what we now know is the Antarctic, the two ships lost contact with each other in thick fog.

James called the new piece of equipment his ‘Watch Machine’ and it guided them back to England where James was met with a hero’s welcome. It was July 1775.To celebrate and remember his voyage, 2000 medals were made and sold as souvenirs.They were called the Resolution and Adventure Medals.
