Hebdomada Aenigmatum is the first monthly magazine of crosswords and puzzles in Latin. It was launched in June 2014 by the Italian Cultural Association Leonardo and is available free of charge in printable pdf format upon registration on the www.MyLatinLover.it website.

The slogan “Are you a Latin Lover?” plays with the double meaning of the “Latin Lover” expression to create a positive association with the study of Latin. The objective of this initiative is to propose a light and fun approach for all the Latin enthusiasts, teachers and students.

The magazine features several crosswords and word puzzles in Latin, a section with global news, a comic strip of Incredibilis Snupius (Snoopy), the Pope’s tweets in Latin and a section on miscellaneous subjects (movies, recipes, sport, etc.).

The magazine also features a variation of Sudoku with Latin numerals. Not everybody knows that the Sudoku is a modern version of the “Latin square”. Hebdomada Aenigmatum has therefore recovered the classical origins of one of the most popular games in the world.

The editor-in-chief is Luca Desiata alias "Lucas Cupidus", an executive at the Italian energy company Enel and a Professor at the Luiss Business School in Rome.

In the few months from its launch, the magazine has already been subscribed by about 6,000 readers globally. About 3,000 subscriptions are from France, Germany, the UK and Northern Europe where a strong tradition of Latin studies is still alive.

Hebdomada Aenigmatum has received extensive coverage on the international press including The Times, The Telegraph, BBC, Le Monde, NBC News, Kleine Zeitung, Pravda, etc.

The success of Hebdomada Aenigmatum proves that Latin is still alive and can be proposed as an ideal tool for international communication to overcome the language barriers that still hamper European integration.

European Latin-Greek Festival

The goal of the Festival is to highlight, through an eclectic and original program, the richness of the ancient languages and cultures as well as their viability in today's world. Lectures, tours, shows, animations, games, debates, will make this event a celebration of classical culture, within everyone's reach.

The European Latin-Greek Festival celebrates this year its 10th edition. It is now permanently hosted by the city of Lyon. The new organizing team will foster the spirit that has always animated the festival: culture and leisure, in a spirit of openness and sharing.

The new formula of the organization foresees events spread over seven different locations in Lyon and many cultural partners (Ecole Normale Supérieure of Lyon, the Department of Art History of the University of Lyon 2, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Gallo-Roman museum, the archaeological Department of the city, the Laboratory of virtual images of the University of Caen-Normandy, the University of Lausanne, and 25 libraries).

This 10th edition of the Festival will focus on the theme of citizenship: public lectures will invite to reflect on the differences and similarities between ancient and modern citizens, original shows will make Greek and Latin authors accessible to all, lively and dynamic visits to museums will allow to rediscover ancient masterpieces and to question the meaning and evolution of the concept of citizenship. Finally, the Festival will be animated by events related to cinema, comics, music, digital, etc.

The goal is also to highlight the ties between European countries and the Mediterranean basin around their common Greek-Roman culture; the participants of the festival this year will be from France, Germany, England, Italy, Switzerland and Tunisia.

Finally, the festival wants to give voice to young people’s interest in classical culture; on March 24 an unprecedented performance will bring together 160 young people aged between 13 to 20 years, for a public declamation of a speech of Cicero.

More than 500 Latin and Hellenist scholars, from 20 schools and universities, will participate to this year's festival. From all over the world they will gather around a common project, centered on the humanities: what better way to build Europe and the world of tomorrow?
