One Step Problems
A class contains 25 children. How many children are there in 7 classes?
How many 35p pencils can you buy for £2?
Kim earns £15 each day. How long will it take her to save up £100?
25 children x 7 classes = 175 children
£2.00 ÷ 35p = 5 (25p left)
A film lasts for one hour and 37 minutes. How many minutes is this?
60 minutes + 37 minutes = 97 minutes
£100 ÷ 15 = 7 weeks (£5 left over)

A square has a perimeter of 20cm. What is the length of each side?
The train leaves at 9:30 and arrives at 11:06. How long has the journey lasted?
For two league games in August, Burney has 7,273 and 8,934 watching. How many people watched both games in total?
20 ÷ 4 = 5cm
1 hour 36 mins
George is a plumber. Taps cost £6.50. How many taps can George buy with £30?
£30 ÷ £6.50 = 4 taps (£4 left over)
7,273 + 8,934 = 16,207 people.

James has a piece of rope 4 metres long. He cuts off 65cm. How much rope is left?
Adam has £15. He spends £3.85 on a CD, and £5.50 on a t-shirt. How much money has he got left?
Petrol costs £1.15 a litre. How much will 15 litres cost?
£15 - £3.85 – £5.50 = £5.65
It costs 7p a minute to make a call. How much will a 42 minute call cost?
42 minutes x 7p = £2.94
£1.15 x 15 = £17.25
4 metres (400cm) – 65cm = 335cm

A laptop costs £450. In a sale there is 10% off. How much is the laptop in the sale?
Jerry collects toy cars. He had 74 but gave 36 to Harry and lost another 12 of them. How many toy cars has he got now?
There are 31 days in March, May and July. There are 30 days in April and June. How many days are there in these 5 months altogether?
10% of £450 = £45. £450 - £45 = £405
74 – 36 – 12 = 26 toy cars
(31 x 3) + 30 + 30 = 153 days

Jason earns £4 a day for his paper round, and £3 a day for delivering leaflets. How much has he earned after 4 days?
Sarah gets £2.50 pocket money every week. She saves up for 4 weeks, and gets another £20 for Christmas. How much money has she got altogether?
In a theme park, an adult ticket costs £7 and a children’s ticket costs £5. How much will it cost for 3 adults and 4 children?
(£4 x 4) + (£3 x 4) = £28
(£7 x 3) + (£5 x 4) = £41
(£2.50 x 4) + £20 = £30

The RSPCA says it costs £3 per day to keep a cat and £5 per day to keep a dog. Today there are 11 cats and 8 dogs. How much will this cost?
Chester is 32 miles away from Manchester. Llandudno is 51 miles from Chester. How far is Llandudno from Manchester?
Ben has 101 sweets. He gives 15 to Mike, and another 19 to Chloe. How many sweets has he got left?
(11 x £3) + (8 x £5) = £73.
101 – 15 - 19 = 67 sweets
32 miles + 51 miles = 83 miles.
