Wyvern College Assessment Record – Summer 2021

Assessment Record for determining teacher assessed grades in Summer 2021

Background

Every centre must produce an Assessment Record for each subject cohort, that includes the sources of the assessment evidence being used and the rationale

for the choice of evidence, the level of control for assessments considered, and any other evidence that explains the determination of the final teacher

assessed grades. Any necessary variations for individual students will be recorded in due course following the submission on mitigating circumstances.

Students have been made aware of the following:

My grade will be determined by using the following as evidence: -

• Final summative assessments performance from May 2021

• Trial exam performance from March 2021

• Performance from in-class assessments where undertaken

• Practical and performance work (Non-Examined Assessments (NEA) / coursework)

• Previous summative assessments completed during the course

• Class work over the duration of the course

• Home learning

Assessment Evidence Form

Set out below are the assessment records for each course delivered by Wyvern College.

If an assessment objective has been omitted at subject cohort level please briefly outline the reasons why:- Not applicable.

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- Most evidence used will be from Year 11, as this is when students have developed the skills and techniques needed to fully access and engage with the exam content. I have included assessments that have the widest range of topics used to ensure fairness for all students and their understanding of different units. Theme E was taught primarily during lockdown, thus evidence for this is limited and, therefore, represents a smaller proportion of the content we are considering as evidence. Given the Covid limitations, some evidence used will be from low control settings; however, I feel it appropriate to include as it informs our understanding of student progress and effort. Much of the assessment material produced during Year 10 and Year 11 lockdown/home learning tasks, covers the widest array of topics and thus is important to consider. However, this will have less weighting in comparison to summative assessments/trial examination undertaken in formal conditions.

If an assessment objective has been omitted at subject cohort level please briefly outline the reasons why:- AO2 and AO4 have not been covered in as much depth and detail. AO1 and AO3 will require higher weighting than normal.

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- All assessment objectives covered. Exam project (externally set task) not covered as instructed by AQA. 2 units covered to show an average of ability throughout the Year under conditions replicated in any regular Year. Year 9 and Year 10 work as supporting evidence mainly for those with little evidence of Unit 1 and Unit 2 Year 11 coursework. AQA Portfolio – One extended project with further supporting evidence. All students will have one extended project covering all AO’s. This may be as a result of combining more than one project together. Therefore, supporting evidence will be varied.

Active Citizenship is usually taught through two campaigns; one in Year 9 and one in Year 10. As the Year 10 campaign could not take place they used their campaign from Year 9 in the assessments and exams. This meant that their own campaign part of the unit has not been assessed as much as general active citizenship. Approximately half of the Politics and Participation unit was taught during lockdown (some during the first lockdown and some during the second), whilst the rest was taught during the autumn term of Year 11. This, therefore, hasn’t been assessed as much as other units. Given the Covid limitations, some evidence used will be from low control settings; however, I feel it appropriate to include as it informs our understanding of student progress and effort. Much of the assessment material produced over Year 10 and 11 lockdown/home learning tasks covers the widest array of topics and thus is important to consider. However, this will have less weighting in comparison to summative assessments/examinations undertaken in exam conditions.

If an assessment objective has been omitted at subject cohort level please briefly outline the reasons why:- Not applicable

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- A selection of Computer Systems papers and Computational thinking and algorithms papers have been chosen to allow students the opportunities to demonstrate skills across the two broad areas. Within the papers are questions indicative of students’ skills in the three key assessment objectives. All students have had the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of Computer Science principles as well as the opportunity to demonstrate practical application of computational thinking skills. The grades attained by students in each paper were considered in reaching an overall grade representative of their attainment in each assessment objective.

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- All the learning objectives have been covered in the cohort except for R084 controlled assessment for some classes. Two past exam papers have been sat, in exam conditions, within the classroom which covers all of the LOs. OCR removed LO3 from Assessment Units 1 & 2 (controlled assessment) due to students potential lack of access to software tools during remote learning in 2021. If an assessment objective has been omitted at subject cohort level please briefly outline the reasons why:- Formal NEA AO2b and AO3, impacted by Covid, time away from the workshop, school closed to students and inability to continue practical elements during Covid restrictions from mid November 2020.

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision: - Where possible we have tried to continue with the NEA process as much as possible, enabling us to mark students work in line with the exam board guidance. Although not all areas are complete, it will enable us to make a qualitative analysis of the standard of their work. It has been agreed by the department, inline with the Ofqual consultation feedback from the exam board, that the NEA is not expected to be completed. Therefore, assessment focus and coverage for the NEA are AO1a, AO1b and AO2a only (omitting AO2b and AO3). The full written paper covers AO3 and AO4. We recognise a gap in the non-completion of AO2b (making element) of the NEA and therefore will draw upon the practical skills assessments (PWAs) carried out from Year 9 though to the spring term of Year 10. The trial exam has been included as it is the only example of a full-length formal paper that we have been able to undertake. Under normal circumstances, component 1 (written paper) accounts for 50% of the final grade. We have chosen to carry out an additional 1 hour written assessment to allow students another opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in the subject, showing and detailing their design skills and thinking. This evidence supports filling the gaps in AO2b and AO3 which has not been produced within the NEA.

No AO4 required for Paper 2. Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- Assessments 1 and 2 are formal invigilated examinations/assessments which when combined assess the full course content and are conducted under a high level of control. They maximise the opportunity for students to demonstrate their competency across the full course (taught) material. Assessments 3 and 4 provide additional evidence. These were independent homework tasks which were not completed under controlled conditions. Completion rates and scores on these tasks will support the summative final assessments.

This covers all the AOs, including the NEA production element of the course too. A full range of skills have been covered in the trial exam and final assessments, including film context and film analysis.

Y Y Y H

If an assessment objective has been omitted at subject cohort level please briefly outline the reasons why:- Assessment 1: The Food Investigation Assessment- has been removed by the examination board in light of the loss of learning due to lockdown (combination of AO2 and AO4). Assessment 2: The Food Preparation Assessment- much of the cooking element has been unable to happen due to social distancing and the halting of all practical activities. This has had a knock-on effect on the level of evaluation students have been able to carry out (A04 of component 2)

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- Where possible we have tried to continue with the NEA process as much as possible, enabling us to mark students work in line with the exam board guidance. Although not all areas are complete, it will enable us to make a qualitative analysis of the standard of their work. To enable us to comment on the practical element in AO3 we have decided to carry out a shortened 2-hour practical assessment, and ensure the practical element remains a key part of the students grade outcome. As this is a shortened practical experience (and Assessment 1- The Food Investigation Assessment has already been removed which included a practical element) we will include our Departmental PWAs from the course where necessary. This is where we do not feel the 2-hour practical assessment adequately reflects their potential.

Page 20: Wyvern College: Assessment Records

Wyvern College Assessment Record – Summer 2021

The trial exam has been included as it is the only example of a full-length formal paper we have been able to undertake. Under normal circumstances, component 1 accounts for 50% of the final grade. We have chosen to carry out an additional 1 hour written exam to allow students another opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in the subject. There was a fair amount of absence in the revision for trial exams, and as a first-time exam season experience we feel some students may have struggled with this. The 1 hour final assessment has been based on two of the units taught during Year 10. This was agreed by all three teachers of the cohort where we feel all classes had the most consistent teaching and learning experience.

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- All course content was taught by January 2021 which is in line with the timescale of a typical year and covered all AO’s. Paper 3 was removed from examined content for 2021 by AQA as Covid prevented students from collecting their own fieldwork data and an issue evaluation pre-release was halted by the exam board. As such we chose not to complete a whole paper 3 which would include questions on familiar fieldwork. However it did include some general fieldwork questions on unfamiliar fieldwork in the combined trial assessment paper. This ensured the geographical skills component of the course was covered. Paper 1 and Paper 2 completed in full.

From the beginning of Year 9 our assessments have been designed to replicate GCSE papers in style, range of questions and complexity, and have contained tasks appropriate to both Foundation and Higher Tier. All assessments have been sat under formal conditions. We feel that all assessments are valid in enabling us to assess a grade for students and, therefore, have been important evidence to support our decision making.

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:-

• Assessments cover the whole range of Assessment Objectives, with a sensible range of assessments completed in high and medium control.

• Assessments have included a range of “past paper” material, exam board produced assessment materials and centre-created assessment materials.

If an assessment objective has been omitted at subject cohort level please briefly outline the reasons why:- Not applicable.

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- Assessment 1: Coursework equates to 50% of students’ final grade and has been moderated by exam board (OCR). Assessment 2: Full exam paper gives a strong indicator of student understanding of theoretical knowledge underpinning the course. Assessment 3: LO4 is a large unit with a strong emphasis on technical knowledge. Assessment 4: Full exam paper – most recent formal assessment completed prior to pandemic.

If an assessment objective has been omitted at subject cohort level please briefly outline the reasons why:- Not applicable.

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- Assessments 1 and 2 are formal invigilated examinations/assessments which assess the full course content and are conducted under a high level of control. They maximise the opportunity for students to demonstrate their competency across the full course (taught) material. Assessments 3 and 4 provide additional evidence, particularly of student engagement and potential. These are homework papers completed which were not completed under controlled conditions, but with the purpose of guiding their revision. Completion rates and scores on these homework papers will be a proxy for student effort and progress during the Year 11 Spring and Summer terms. Assessment 5 is additional evidence for classes which may have lower completion rates of the homework papers in Assessments 3 and 4.

More recent media texts relating to assessment in 2021 (e.g. TLC Waterfalls, Fortnite) were not studied due to timing constraints caused by the government’s lockdown. Syllabus covered includes exploration of all the AOs, including the NEA production element of the course too. A full range of skills have been covered in the examinations and final assessments, including media text analysis, media institutions and the social/historical/cultural context of media texts.

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- Two reasons for sitting the practical paper twice: 1) It is worth 35% of overall grade 2) ordinarily students can sit the paper in March & June – this scenario has been replicated. Written Paper sat during March trial exam and May final assessment will count towards 15% of the overall grade as per specification guidelines. Assessment work from NEA Unit 1 will count for 15% each of the overall grade. Assessment work from NEA Unit 3 will count for 15% each of the overall grade. Units 2 & 4 NEA has banked marks from last Year covering the remaining 30% of the overall grade.

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- The only adjustments made are a reduction of the required assessments for 8582/C (practical performance) from 3, to 2 physical activites, in-keeping with AQA specification change for 2021. All components of the course have been completed and the syllabus covered, covering all AO’s and in-line with the weightings as detailed in the specification.

If an assessment objective has been omitted at subject cohort level please briefly outline the reasons why:- The assessment papers used include all assessment objects and cover a range of topics from within that area.

Outline the rationale for the choice of assessment evidence used, i.e. why the evidence above was used and how it supported the grading decision:- We decided to run the B1, C2 and P2 assessments as this is the content students prepared for before Christmas. Due to the short amount of notice students were given of the upcoming trial exams, we decided that it would be in their best interests to move the biology assessment to April 2021. As we didn’t feel it right or fair to ask students to prepare for 3 additional full papers we have taken one key topic from each subject for their final assessment. This provides students with an equal spread across the 3 science subjects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Page 36: Wyvern College: Assessment Records

Wyvern College Assessment Record – Summer 2021

The trial exam and in-class Biology assessment papers were carried out under a high level of control. The final assessment (Assessment 4) we had to utilise questions outside of the 2019 AQA content, which means that it is possible that students have seen those questions over their time at Wyvern. We do not feel this unduly comprises the integrity of the assessment because we have not prepared for these papers for trial exams, nor have we taught this content this year. Therefore, it is very unlikely students would have seen such questions. We have decided not to use the assessments/questions produced by AQA because they were made available to the public, the quesitons were not chanllenging enough, nor did they cover enough of the assessment objective
