Knight News – Council 6320 Spring 2017
Grand Knight’s Message Worthy Brothers,
Spring has finally arrived. While we were blessed with
a mild winter, it is always refreshing to see the trees
begin to bud and the crocus poke through the dirt,
snow and mud and burst into vibrant colors.
We recently celebrated our 45th anniversary and I can’t
help but reflect on our rich history of charity and
service. I am awed by what all the brothers who have
come before us were able to accomplish. At the same
time, I am strongly encouraged by the ‘season of
renewal’ I see within our own council.
Due in large part to the tireless efforts of our
Membership Chairman, PGK Greg Birrer and the
unending support of Fr. Marc, our council has seen
something of rejuvenation. We have welcomed into
our fold a host of new members, who are active and
vibrant participants of our council activities. At the
same time I am seeing existing brothers becoming
more active within our council activities, coupled with
brothers who were already active, volunteering to take
on new leadership/chairman roles. Taken together I
see very bright prospects for the next 45 years.
I am again writing this letter on a business trip, and as
dusk sets upon the city of Boston, I see the lights of the
high-rises come on, illuminating the darkening streets
below. I can’t help but to draw a parallel to how our
faith, our convictions, and our efforts as brother
knights do the same. Our recent anniversary teaches us
one thing, if nothing else. That as the tides of health,
happiness, fame & fortune ebb and flow for all people
and families in our community - our council has always
been there and will continue to be there, to shine a
light, to provide a helping hand, a kind word, or simply
a smile to those that need it most.
GK’s Message – Cont’d We don’t do it for the press, we don’t do it for the
accolades, we do it because it’s just the right thing to
do.
Vivat Jesus,
David Reinknecht – Grand Knight 6320

A Special Thanks
I would like to give a special Thank You to Worthy
Past Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator Bob
Barbalaci. Bob is stepping down as the Chairman of
the Retention Committee after many years of tireless
effort. Bob inherited a roster full of members unsure
about their commitment to remain knights and
through hard work, and a tireless adherence to our
stringent retention policies Bob and his committee
were able to significantly clean up the membership
rolls and put us on a good footing going forward.
The work of the retention committee is often unseen
and unheralded. The primary mission of the
committee is to reach out to brothers and determine
what if anything can be done to maintain their
interest and standing in the council. It is a vital part of
a successful council and Bob’s and the committee
members’ efforts and accomplishments were
substantial year in and year out.
Brother Bob Sumski (Zig) has graciously volunteered
to assume the role of Retention Chairman. Having
served on the committee for the past few years, I
know we will once again be in good hands with Zig at
the helm.

Engagement Opportunities
Brothers. Our council is an ACTIVE Council. We
have many talented and generous brothers who
run the events - but new volunteers, ideas and
opinions are always needed.
Roses for Parenthood –
We are looking for new volunteers to join our
Roses for Motherhood Program!
This Popular program entails supporting our new
mothers and fathers who chose life by being
present at Baptisms in the Church. Please
contact John Wolf at 973-584-5413
Pancake Breakfast – Sun May 7th This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved and interact with the members of your parish. While we normally make a small profit from this event, its value is also represented by the community outreach we are able to do. If you have some spare time – please contact the Pancake Breakfast Chairman, Stan Stronski at [email protected]. We always need brothers to help pick up all the supplies the morning of the event, to help cook and serve the food and to help with the breakdown. I guarantee unless you have helped load/unload all the items required, the amount of equipment that needs to be moved is difficult to imagine. Many hands make light work.
Memorial Day Parade – Monday May 29th Be sure to come on out a help the council pay its respect to all those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.
Membership Memo
Membership – everybody talks about growing the order
and obviously, we need new members. Let’s face it,
that’s the only way our council will continue to thrive in
the future.
I’m asking you to reach out to potential members:
neighbors, men you see regularly at church, their wives,
friends, and relatives… But, instead of just asking them
to join – how about asking them what their perception is
of the Knights of Columbus? What have they heard?
What do they think? Have they ever considered joining?
If no, why not. If yes, why haven’t they joined? It will be
interesting to hear what non-members think about the
K of C and our Council, but also, this is a way to engage
them in conversation where you can let them know why
you became a Knight. In this way, you can engage
potential new members in a dialog about the Knights
and then invite them to join, or plant the seed of the
idea of joining.
Suggestion: Invite a potential member as your guest to
our Charity Live auction and Tricky Tray coming up this
April 29th. What an enjoyable evening and great way for
them to see our council in action!
Greg Birrer, PGK, Membership Coordinator
Annual Auction – Sat 04/29
The Annual Auction is our biggest fundraiser of the year.
The funds raised during this event are needed to allow us
to continue helping all our worthy charities.
The auction is quickly approaching and your help is
needed. We are still in need of live item auction
donations. If you have a timeshare of large ticket item
you can part with – it will directly benefit all those we
help. Please contact PGK Frank Wos if you have anything
to donate to the auction ASAP. I guarantee our charities
will be thankful for your selflessness.

Assembly Notes Monsignor Lange Assembly As the Columbian Year winds down, the assembly is
doing the same. At this time there are only two events
to report. The upcoming 4th degree exemplification on
April 23 and the VA picnic on May 28. There will be
eleven 3rd Degree brothers joining the ranks of the
Fourth Degree with eight of these gentlemen coming
from our own council. The assembly will then host the
VA picnic which will be held at the outdoor pavilion on
the Lyons campus. This is a popular event with around
80 veterans and staff in attendance. On behalf of the
Monsignor Lange Assembly I want to extend our
congratulations to the council on its 45th anniversary.
Fraternally,
Bob Barbalaci, FN

In Case You Were Wondering…
What is the Nominating Committee and What is it’s Role?
The Council Nominating Committee is the committee responsible for proposing the Slate of Officers for the upcoming Columbian Year. It is comprised of 3 or more members of the Council, typically Past Grand Knights. This year, the Committee is chaired by PGK John Evangelista and includes PGK’s Dennis Kendzior, Bob Barbalaci and John Castagna. The Committee chairman is appointed by the Grand Knight and in turn, the chairman selects the other Committee members.
In considering candidates for the various officer positions, the Committee looks at only 3rd Degree members who are in ‘good standing’ with the Council. Members not having attained membership at the 3rd Degree level must first advance to that level before being considered for office, and members who are not current with their dues payments are not in ‘good standing’.
There are a number of criteria used to evaluate potential nominees, such as the following:
• Attendance at Council meetings
• Participation in Council programs and activities
• Experience in other Council officer positions
• Demonstrated desire or interest in Council leadership
• Experience in chairing or co-chairing a Council program
• Familiarity with the Council website and new member handbook
Once elected to office, a member is required to attend ALL Council meetings as well as officer meetings. When needed, an officer must request an ‘excused absence’ from the Grand Knight prior to the meeting date. For advancement through the various officer positions or continuation in the present position, an officer’s attendance and participation are strongly considered.
The Officer positions are Chaplain, Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight, Chancellor, Recorder, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, Lecturer, Advocate, Warden, Inside Guard, Outside Guard and Trustees (1-year, 2-year and 3-year). Of these, the Chaplain, Financial Secretary and Lecturer are appointed positions and are not included in the Slate of Officers proposed by the Nominating Committee. Duties and responsibilities for each of the Officer positions (as per Supreme Council) are outlined in the New Member Handbook which is available to members on the Council website. Additional Council requirements are communicated to prospective officers prior to their acceptance for nomination.
There are four ‘Chair Officer Positions’:
• Grand Knight
• Deputy Grand Knight
• Chancellor
• Recorder
Occupants of these offices are generally expected to progress up the Council leadership ranks.
The Nominating Committee presents the proposed Slate of Officers to the membership at the second meeting in April or the first meeting in May each year. In accordance with the Council and Supreme bylaws, election of officers is then conducted during a regular business meeting no earlier than May 15th and no later than the first business meeting in June, providing that sufficient notification is given to the membership. Newly elected officers take over responsibilities as of July 1 and are officially installed in August or September, as scheduled by the Grand Knight.
