Product Note
The XDM-40 is a small but powerful optical solution designed for customer-premise applications and collocation in metro networks with low wavelength requirements. It delivers fully transparent GbE/10 GbE, storage, 2.5 Gbps, and 10 Gbps services.
The system features a small footprint and flexible packaging with high availability and scalability from CWDM to DWDM, including pluggable optics. Its simple architecture renders it easy to deploy, thus lowering operational costs considerably.
The XDM-40 can also be deployed in conjunction with the XDM-500/1000/2000 to deliver integrated metro access to core/regional

solutions, eliminating back-to-back terminals and driving additional capital and operational savings.
A key feature of the XDM line of products is its unique ability to multiplex four OTU-1 streams into a single OTU-2 signal, enabling operators to build an end-to-end OTN network from access to core, without the need for regeneration at the WDM gateways. Furthermore, end-to-end management from the access to the core enables simple and efficient operation while ensuring availability.
Pioneering the market for full OTN transport and multiplexing
capacityOTN transponders/combiners with a full range of optical interfaces for connectivity, sublambda grooming, and efficient data transport in a single shelf.
Fully compatible with its XDM-500/1000/2000 family counterparts, the XDM-40 delivers a cost-effective and affordable mix of data and TDM services over OTN, resulting in new revenue-generating opportunities.
The XDM-40 modular design features universal I/O slots and hot-swappable cards and modules. This tremendous flexibility allows provisioning of any combination of topologies, bitrates, protection schemes, interface types, and protocols for any service need.
Multiple protection levels enable network operators tocustomize the network to specific demands.

OTN Inband Management
The OTN standard includes provisions for inband management of optical networks. The benefit of inband management in optical access networks is that it eliminates the need to provide an external DCN or out-of-band optical supervisory channel for each access site, increasing the reliability and resilience of the access network.
Extending the XDM Family
ECI Telecom's XDM family of MSTPs is a high-density optical networking solution optimized for metro and regional applications. The XDM incorporates high
A Single Service Card Does It All
The diversity of traffic demands and services in the access network creates a challenge for today's network operators to provide a standardized and cost-efficient solution for the entire network, while reducing the number of parts and network elements.
The XDM family universal base card is a leader in the provision of multiple services, enabling both OTN transport and service multiplexing. Line side interfaces support both SDH and OTN transport at bitrates of 2.5 Gbps or 10 Gbps, as well as programmable or enhanced FEC (EFEC).
A substantially smaller Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is achieved using pluggable optics for both 2.5 Gbps and10 Gbps services, including C/DWDM SFP/XFPs as well as full C band tunable transmitters for spares management.
Key Features
The XDM-40 integrates OTN transponders and combiners in a small and cost-effective package. Based on the XDM single-architecture and build-as-you-grow® approach, the platform can be scaled to grow as demand increases.
The XDM-40 key functional components include:
Two multifunctional slots for the XDM universal card for CWDM or DWDM transponder or combiner configurations
Two additional slots for integrated C/DWDM OADMs or EDFAs for extended optical reach in point-to-point and ring configurations
Full compatibility with XDM-500/1000/2000 cards and modules
Multiple protection schemes for point-to-point and ring architectures
Inband management support, making external DCN management unnecessary
End-to-end management and provisioning via EMS-XDM and Lightsoft® NMS
In short, the flexibility and scalability of the XDM-40 multiservice C/DWDM access platform bring the OTN layer to the access layer, while substantially reducing transport costs.
Intelligent Photonic Layer
Photonic components such as OADMs or active metro optical amplifiers are inherently managed within the XDM-40 in two dedicated MIO slots. Each slot can hold up to two passive C/DWDM OADMs for a configuration of 16 unprotected or 8 protected wavelengths per element.
Growing from CWDM to DWDM channels in a non-traffic-affecting manner enables an even quicker return on investment. For example, an element can be upgraded from 2.5 G CWDM to DWDM by simply replacing the SFP and replacing the filter in the modular OADM.
Low-cost single-slot amplifiers optimized for the metro access are also available for distance extensions and fiber relief networks.
Advanced Management Features and Ease of Operation
Convenient and simple service provisioning combined with awareness of the photonic layer, enable the easy and effective creation of services over multiple technologies. At the same time, performance monitoring of all interfaces, optical trails, and customizable alarms provide unrivaled FCAPS flexibility.
