By definition, a workgroup printer is a shared resource. Typically, a networklaser printer is shared by groups of up to 25 people on a regular basis. It is alsocommon for there to be multiple computer platforms, such as the various ver-sions of Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Unix, or Linux. By far the most popularnetwork used is Ethernet, increasingly with TCP/IP protocols.

Even with multiple users on a variety of platforms with their own unique appli-cations and needs, all networked printer users require three things from theirprinters:

■ Speed

■ Quality

■ Flexibility

P R I N T S P E E D

Today’s busy workgroups, whatever their size, have no time to waste. Considerraw engine speed, but also look at processor speed, first-page-out time, and theability to process multiple jobs concurrently to give you a feel for the printer’stotal throughput capability.

H O W T H E P H A S E R 54 0 0 M E E T S T H E P R I N T S P E E D R E Q U I R E M E N T

Start with a 266 MHz G3 class processor that delivers a blazing first-page-out injust 9 seconds and then go on to print at 40 ppm print engine speed. Add inputfeeders to boost capacity up to 3150 sheets and productivity features like “Sendonce, RIP once, Print many” and “Job Pipelining” and the Phaser 5400 proves itsvalue as a productive workgroup asset.

Speed at the cost of quality is not acceptable. Consider the resolution of theprinter as represented in a variety of text styles and sizes. Alsoconsider fills, gradients, graphic elements, and photo images.

Selectable resolution from 600 x 600 dpi, to 1200 dpi image quality, to true1200 x 1200 dpi, delivers the best combination of superb image quality andworkgroup productivity to meet every application need.

What types of documents do your users typically produce? Do theyneed a variety of media capabilities (e.g., pre-printed letterhead on finebond paper, standard peer-to-peer quality laser paper, transparencymedia, card stock, envelopes, etc.)? Is automatic two-sided printing(duplexing) important?

H O W T H E P H A S E R 54 0 0 M E E T S T H E F L E X I B I L I T Y R E Q U I R E M E N T

The Phaser 5400 boasts excellent reliability on all media types, handling paperweights from 16 lb bond to 110 lb cardstock (60 to 200 gsm). To improve printingquality on different stocks, the Phaser 5400 enables variable fusing temperatures.

Multiple input and output options give maximum printing flexibility: The Phaser5400 comes standard with a 500-sheet input tray, a 150-sheet multipurposebypass feeder, and a 500-sheet output tray. Add one or two 500 sheet paperfeeders (in letter or ledger sizes).

Broaden your input and output capabilities further with a 2,000-sheet feeder, and1,000-sheet stacker. For exceptionally fast two-sided printing, add an automaticduplex module (standard on DT and DX configurations).

Advanced graphics features like Edge-to-Edge Printing, Booklet Printing, and theability to print up to 11 x 17 in. page size, let you print spreadsheets and profes-sional-looking newsletters and brochures.
