Welcome Letter from the President of the GOC SOWSG ATHENS 2011Dear Family Members

On behalf of the Organizing Committee of the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011, on behalf of all of us, who participate in the global movement of Special Olympics, as well as the whole of Greece, I would like to welcome you all to our country, which is honored to host the 13th Special Olympics Summer World Games.

You certainly know that Greece is the birthplace of Olympic spirit. The land where the Olympic Games began almost 3000 years ago, as well as the land where they were revived in 1896. We therefore believe that the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011, where your children will be participating, constitute an ideal opportunity; they are the place where the contemporary values of humanism espoused by the Special Olympics meet the timeless Olympic values of beauty, greatness and truth.

We invested several years of hard work, putting our hearts and minds to the task in order to prepare the biggest athletic and cultural event of 2011, preparing a game that the wonderful winning world deserves. We also spread the important messages of the Special Olympics across Greece bringing to people across the country our vision of a society that respects difference and treats its members equally.

After all our hard working efforts, which were supported by the State and the Municipality of Athens, by the Church of Greece, by numerous private companies as well as 25000 volunteers, we have now reached the opening of the Games. We share with you and your children the same anticipation for the festivities to begin.

In this handbook, we tried to include all the information you might need in order to enjoy every moment and every aspect of this celebration of life. We hope that you will share your experiences and your smile with us. We hope that you will feel the meaning of the slogan of the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011: I’m in!

Welcome to Athens!

1. Special Olympics Athens 2011- General Information

1.1 Special Olympics

Special Olympics is a non-profit organization that was officially founded in 1968, giving form to the vision of its founder, Eunice Kennedy-Shriver (1921-2009), sister of the USA President John F Kennedy. A vision born in June 1962 in a summer camp at Eunice’s home, where children and adults with intellectual disabilities were invited in order for her to explore their abilities in various sports activities. Only six years after, in the summer of 1968, the U.S. Summer Games took place in Illinois with 1.000 participating athletes with intellectual disabilities from 26 states of the U.S. and Canada. From then on until today Special Olympics have evolved to a Global Movement that offers the opportunity to 3.7 million athletes with intellectual disabilities from 185 countries, mainly through sports, to reinforce their self-esteem, to discover their special abilities, and in this way become active and useful members of their societies. Special Olympic Games held every year by the Special Olympics movement, constitute of more than 30 Olympic-type summer and winter events.

The possibilities offered by the Global Movement to people with intellectual disabilities for participation in sports, social inclusion and demonstration of their competence to society is beneficial for themselves, their families and the communities in which they live, whatever their cultural, religious or other differences.

1.2 Special Olympics Hellas

Special Olympics Hellas was founded in 1987 as a non-profit, sports and educational association for the integration of Greeks with intellectual disabilities in the Global Movement of Special Olympics, offering them the opportunity to bring out their special abilities and exhibit them to the global community, through their participation in international sports events. At the same time, they undertook the responsibility to inspire the Greek society and the state to respect the diversity of people with intellectual disability, their special needs and the belief that they are useful and equal members of this society.

Special Olympics Hellas is an associate member of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and officially recognized by the Deputy Ministry of Culture (General Secretariat of Sport), as a Sporting Association. The activities of Special Olympics Hellas today rely on volunteers. The costs of the organization and participation of athletes in competitions are covered by private donators and public bodies, while a respectable amount is covered by the State.

So far, Special Olympics Hellas offers participation opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities in twenty-four (24) Olympic-type sports.

From September to June each year, Special Olympics Hellas, in addition to training programs, organize Local, Regional, and Pan-Hellenic Games.

The Emblem of the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011 is a radiant sun, the source of life that underlines the excellence and power of the athlete that takes part in the Games. Excellence is depicted in the olive branch and power in the spiral form in the center of the sun. The colors reflect the Greek landscape and project emotions

Glyfada Golf Course

The Glyfada Golf Course, founded in 1962, was designed by the renowned Scottish golf architect Donald Harradine and has undergone two major improvements. One before the World Golf Championship in 1979 and one in 1991 for the purposes of the XI Mediterranean Games of Golf. Because of the architectural structure, the large number of trees and the difficulty of the routes (Fairways), the Glyfada Golf Course is considered one of the best courses in the world. The Glyfada Golf Course meets the Olympic standards with 18 holes, Par 72 (Difficulty site characterization) and has all necessary facilities for organizing and conducting events of international concern. It is located at the coastal area of Glyfada. The municipality of Glyfada has kindly granted the venue for the Athens 2011 World Summer Games.

5. About Greece and Athens

5.1 Brief History

Greece, or the Hellenic Republic, as officially known, lies at the south-eastern coast of Europe. Consisting of a peninsula and over 2.000 islands, the Greek territory extends to 131,957 sq. km. The country has a population of 11,306,183 people. Greece is a Presidential, Parliamentary Democracy. The official language is Greek, an independent branch of the Indo- European family has a history of 34 centuries of written records.

Athens, the capital, is located in the Attica prefecture, in particular in the Attica basin, which is encompassed by Mount Aegaleo, Mount Parnitha, Mount Penteli and Mount Hymettos. Athens, its suburbs and the neighboring town of Piraeus constitute an urban entity with a population of about 4 million residents.

The history of Greece expands to the Bronze Age, the Neolithic Age and even the Paleolithic Age (120.000-10.000 B.C.). Findings in Minoan Crete reveal the development of organized palatial societies at the beginning of the 2nd Millennium B.C. whereas in Mainland Greece the Mycenaean civilization flourishes until 1200 B.C. in the Mycenaean acropolises. The decline of the Mycenaean civilization was followed by a new, bright age for the Greek history, in which the political and social organization was based on city- states.

The Greek civilization reached its peak during the Classical years (5th- 4th century B.C.). Athens, apart from a dominant city was the center of political thought, arts and civilization.

The Peloponnesian war in 431-404 B.C. between Athens and Sparta, in which the majority of the Greek city-states participated, marked another period in the history of Greece: the decline of Athens, the attenuation of the city states and the emerge of a new force, the Macedonians.

Page 52: XIII Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011 · You certainly know that Greece is the birthplace of Olympic spirit. The land where the Olympic Games began almost 3000 years

During the 4th century B.C., the king of Macedonians Phillip II and his son Alexander in particular, (known as Alexander the Great) started a campaign with the vision of uniting all the city- states and regions as far as the Indus River. The death of Alexander the Great was followed by the decline of the empire he created, which was conquered by the Romans in 146 B.C.

The Roman occupation of Greece was characterized by two components: the spread of the Greek civilization and the emerge of a new religion, Christianity.

In 324 A.D. Constantine the Great moved the capital of the Empire from Rome to Constantinople. During Byzantine Years, as this period is known, culture was strongly related to religion, as reflected by the findings.

Constantinople was seized by the Ottomans in 1453 A.D. and for the 4 centuries that followed, Greece was under the Ottoman domination. It was only in 1821 that Greeks started a war of independence, which lasted 9 years. In 1832 Greece became an independent kingdom with limited territory.

After the First World War, in 1920, the Prime Minister of Greece Eleftherios Venizelos started negotiations for the expansion of the Greek territory. The end of the Second World War marked the formulation of greek territory, as it is today.

The years that followed were characterized by strong political activity and power succession reaching a peak in 1967, when the constitution was paralyzed by a dictatorship that lasted for seven years. The restoration of democracy lead to establishment of the system of government as Presidential Parliamentary Democracy. Greece joined the European Community in 1981.
