Dear Jazz Weekend Participants and Guests, On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students in the Central MichiganUniversity School of Music, welcome! We’re glad you’re with us in MountPleasant for the 47th Annual Jazz Weekend. We’re proud to serve our K-12 colleagues and their students by bringingthem together with our faculty, CMU student musicians, outstandingvisiting artists and clinicians, and the community at large for a weekend oflearning and music making. The members of Phi Mu Alpha, withassistance from our collegiate chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi, DeltaOmicron, Sigma Alpha Iota, and National Association for MusicEducation, have worked tirelessly to make this year’s festival a valuableexperience for all. Please enjoy the many performances and clinics,including those featuring our guest artist Terri Lyne Carrington. Each year the School of Music hosts over 8,000 K-12 students andteachers for special events like Jazz Weekend, including the CMUHonors Band and Orchestra, Choral/Vocal Day, Instrumental Workshop,and Summer Music Institute, as well as hosting solo and ensemblefestivals, school music competitions, festivals, and conferences. I hopeyou’ll return for these or any of the many concerts and recitals that takeplace each week in the School of Music. Have a wonderful time while you’re with us. We’re glad you’re here!

Welcome to the 47th Annual Jazz Weekend hosted by Central MichiganUniversity's School of Music and the Nu Pi Chapter of Phi Mu AlphaSinfonia. We are excited to have 66 high school jazz ensembles andcombos in attendance for a weekend featuring CMU’s many jazzensembles and amazing guest artist, Terri Lyne Carrington. Since 1974, the Nu Pi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia has helped planand host this event, giving local high school musicians the chance tocompete with their peers from around the state, hone their skills as youngjazz artists, and benefit from the musical and professional insights of anational-level performing guest. Our thanks go to the Jazz Weekend Committee comprised of KristinPagels, Daniel Koefoed, Scott Topazi, and jazz faculty members:Professor Robbie Smith, Professor John Nichol, Dr. Robert Lindahl, andDr. Andrew Spencer. Three-time GRAMMY®Award-winning drummer, producer, educatorand activist, Terri Lyne Carrington started her professional career asa “kid wonder” while studying under a full scholarship at BerkleeCollege of Music in Boston. In the mid '80’s she worked as an in-demanddrummer in New York before gaining national recognition on late night TVas the house drummer for both the Arsenio Hall Show and QuincyJones’ VIBE TV show. In 1989, Ms. Carrington released a GRAMMY®-nominated debut CD onVerve Forecast, Real Life Story, and toured extensively with WayneShorter and Herbie Hancock, among others. In 2011 she released theGRAMMY®Award-winning album, The Mosaic Project, featuring a cast ofall-star women instrumentalists and vocalists, and in 2013 shereleased Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue, which also earned aGRAMMY®Award, and established her as the first woman everto win in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category. To date Ms. Carrington has performed on over 100 recordings and hasworked extensively with luminary artists such as Al Jarreau, Stan Getz,Woody Shaw, Clark Terry, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, JamesMoody, Yellowjackets, Esperanza Spalding, and many more. Additionally,Ms. Carrington is an honorary doctorate recipient from Berklee, andcurrently serves as Founder and Artistic Director for the Berklee Institute ofJazz and Gender Justice. In 2019 Ms. Carrington was granted the Doris Duke Artist Award, aprestigious acknowledgment in recognition of her past and ongoingcontributions to jazz music. Her current band project, Terri Lyne Carringtonand Social Science (a collaboration with Aaron Parks and MatthewStevens), released their debut album, Waiting Game, in November, 2019on Motema Music.

The Central Wails SaxophoneOrchestra is a six-piece saxophoneensemble founded by CMUProfessor of Saxophone JohnNichol. Performing for nearly twodecades throughout the State ofMichigan, the Wails have beenfeatured at the Michigan State Bandand Orchestra Association (MSBOA)State Conference, the DetroitInternational Jazz Festival, and withthe Midland Symphony Orchestra.

JazzBone has performed concerts on tour throughout Michigan since the early70s and in 1998 earned the "Best Wind Section Award" at the Aquinas JazzFestival. In 1999 JazzBone toured northern Michigan with guest artist Rick Culverand also appeared on the local Art Reach/Veterans Memorial Library "Jazz at theLibrary" series. An important part of their mission is to encourage students andalumni to write original music and contribute arrangements to theirrepertoire. JazzBone at one time or another in the past ten years has featuredguest soloists Rick Culver, Mike Hunter, David Jensen, Jim Gagne, Jim Lutz, JoeRadtke and Phil Schrantz. Jazz-related master classes on campus have beenprovided by trombonists Curtis Fuller, Jim Lutz, John Fedchock, Wycliffe Gordon,Rick Culver, Andy Hunter, Conrad Herwig, and Gene Smith.

First organized in 1956, CMU’s Jazz Lab I has been a consistent participant innumerous jazz festivals including the Aquinas College Jazz Festival, MontreuxInternational Jazz Festival, and Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival. In1989, the ensemble was invited to make its Carnegie Hall debut in New YorkCity on the May 8th opening concert of “Jazz Cavalcade.” The ensemble hasperformed with many outstanding soloists including Carl Fontana, Phil Woods,Doc Severinsen, Cyrus Chestnut, and many others.
